SALOONS OPEN. Those people who had been led to believe that the open saloon can be so regulated as to reduce the liquor evil below the minimum attained in the city of Willmar under prohibition during the last few years were speedily unde ceived when the saloons opened here Wednesday. The last night of saloons at Willmar four and a half years ago, with its revelry and abandon drunkenness was tame compared with the opening night of the new brewery saloon regime. Long restrained appe tites again became active and hundreds of dollars of hard earned wages were swept into the saloon tills the first evening. Drunken men and boys, many under age, staggered about the streets. I none saloon it is said six bar tenders were kept busy handing out the stuff. Five ar rests were made and many more might have been made. These victims were given $10 and costs straight by Judge Muller in the morning, and were thus penalized further for having patronized the new "business" houses estab lished by the city. Some of those who had talked the loudest about "strict enforcement" in order to deceive the voters in favor of li cense found fault with the arrests made, claiming that they were made in spite in order to create sentiment against the saloon It is safe to say that had themal question of license or no license been referred to the people of the city on the morning after the sa loons opened an unprecedented majority would have been re turned against the business. I is freely predicted that the new saloon regime will last only until next opportunity is given for the citizens to vote on the question. No one need look long to see the demoralizing effect the new "bus mess has wrought and the fruits of this policy will become more and more apparent. Some peo ple who have lent their influence to secure the re-establishment of the saloon at Willmar no doubt feel proud of their success. Others do not feel so jubilant. It is understood that a very heavy speaking campaign is to be inaugurated in the county in the hope of arousing party feeling to such an extent that the voters will elect Cole, Schmal, Thorpe and Lundquist. These are theforslag only candidates whose success are endangered here by any op position, and'there are hundreds of good loyal citizens who believe the republican party will be no worse off if these men are re-skulle tired. The plea for votes on state and local offices simply on account of party is usually the plea of the weak candidate. Reports from all parts of the state are to the effect that P. M. Magnusson will give Julius Schmahl a hard run for the office of secretary of state, and repub licans are not scarce who predict that the St. Cloud professor will land the prize. Vote Regardless of Party. Halstad Reporter: If your party fails to put up a worthy man for you to vote for in supporting the party principles, then vote for the man you know is worthy, if he does belong to another party. That is the only way to purify our politics. Each man must help at home. 5 positions—penny pictures. 213 3rd street. 1 Refuse he Kinaj. Henry VIII. bad six wives. To the Voters of Kandiyohi County After due consideration, I have concluded to enter the field as an independent candidate for state senator from Kandiyohi county Nothing less than a sincere conviction that such a course is a public duty would have in duced met take this step If elected I shall voice the demands of the farmers and producers of my home county, such as I have learned them during my seventeen years of newspaper experience here. I am in favor of county option, and will fight for such a law to the end, if given a chance Soliciting the assistance ot my friends thru out the county in securing the necessary signers to the petition before Oct 16, and the support of the voters at the election, Nov 6, 1906, I am yours, Very respectfully, VICTOR E LAWSON For County Commissioner. It will take more than his un supported word to make them believe that Minnesota farms are being de- In fact, such assertions are false on their face, and can be dis proved by the census figures of last year. Mr. Cole is diligently preach ing that the farm population has de creased from 6000 to 10,000 in the past year, while for the five preceeding years the state census shows the fol lowing increase of population in the counties to which he is particularly anxious to apply "state develop ment" Kittson, 1,969 Roseau, 4,197 Marshall, 2,039 Polk, 1,783 Red Lake, 3,760 Norman, 3,131 Clay, 1,- Becker, 4,115 Wilkin, 1,199, Morrison, 1,693 Benton, 1,344 Otter tail, 2,854 MilleLacs, 1,810 Aitkin, 2,794 Kanabec, 1,580 Beltrami and Clearwater, 9,521 Itasca, 6,956 Louis (outside city of Duluth) 22, Cook, 652 Lake 1 619 Hubbard, 2,430 Wadena, 1,396 Todd, 2,424 Cass 3,235 Crow Wing, 2,481 Pine, 3,323 Carleton, 5,270. Vitalit A-plent I Monastic Life. Oh, my friend, you may prate of wasted lives and idleness and the para sites of the church and all that sort of thing, but I fear it is little you know about the vital forces that are feeding and sustaining and strengthening it every hour of the four and twenty. If I could show you the letters that came to me from that friar in the south of Europe, letters bubbling over with health and happiness and the sweetest resignation, and then show you a photo graph of a young man in tonsuie and COWl, With the calmest, clearest eyes that ever looked out from under a placid brow if you could have felt of his knotted biceps and known the grasp of his small but powerful hand and heard the peal of his hearty laughter— for his spirit was bubbling over even there in his serene solitude—you would perhaps begin to understand why the monastic lite, in spite of its tranquillity, never stagnates and why the more you contend against the spirit of the re ligious orders the more they live and thrive.—From "A Fin de Siecle Friar" In National Magazine A o* Idling. Cultivate the art of idling. There is no doubt that to be able to idle at will Is a most valuable gift and one which Is becoming rarer every day The art of loafing is not propeily understood by the majority of people Much has been written on the subject. Steven son dealt with It in an essay Mr. Kenneth Grahame touched on it in "Pagan Papers," and Mr. Barry Pain has some illuminating remarks on the subject in his Canadian canoe book. There is a subtle difference between the views of these experts. Mr. Gra hame advocated absolute idleness. Mr. Pain pointed out, with more truth, that the great art of loafing was to do the easiest thing and that sometimes it is easier to work than to be idle This is the secret of the whole matter The superficial idler thinks it his duty to be idle on every occasion The man who has studied the subject knows that this is an entirely erroneous view. There are times when we feel that we must be up and doing If we sternly repress this inclination our peace is distuibed. The really scien tific idler is the man who can idle at will.—London Chronicle DR.REA SPECIALIST Ear, Nose, Throat Chronic Diseases Diseases of Women Diseases of Men Nex regular professional vibit at Willmar at Merchants Hotel Friday, Oct. 19 from 8 OO a to 2 OO ONE DAY ONLY Returning every four weeks Dr Kea has had 15 years of actual experi ence in the treatment and cure of all curable medical and surgical diseases of the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat, I Diseases Early Con sumption Bronchitis, Bronchial Catarrh, Constitutional Catarrh, Nasal Catarrh, Djs pepsia, Sick Headache, Stomach and Bowel Troubles, Appendicitis Rheumatism, Neural gia, Sciatica, Bright's disease Diabetes, Kid ney.
