LAWSON, Bditor and Manager. LUDVIG S. DALB, City Editor. WEDNESDAY, DEC. 8, 1909. THE RAILROAD STRIKE. The Switchmen's strike is still' on with both sides of the contro versy determined to fight the mat ter to the bitter end. It does not( appear unlikely that the strike will spread all over the country and may involve other branches of the rail road service. Ihe switchmen ask for more pay, and ask to be relieved of so much overtime and Sunday work by means of charging double pay for such work. The companies claim that they cannot afford to pay more wages. There the matter stands and the public must content it&elf with suffering inconvenience and financial loss until one or the other of the parties has been pum melled, beaten and worn out to the point of yielding. It is the same old story of the inevitable conflict of capital and labor. On such occasions as these the necessity of more direct control of the railroads by the state and na tional governments is forced home to the minds of all. Why wait until the sufferings of the public have become acute and the most dire distress forces ac tion? Why should it be necessary that a number of people freeze to death and endless suffering be en tailed before the government sees fit to take hold and adjust the dif- ferences between employer and em ploye? The railroads are after all but the servants of the public. The laws and court decisions so hold. Why shall they then be permitted to assume the positions of masters. Our sympathy is in the first place with the suffering public, the third and by far the greater party affect ed by the strike, to which party we belong. In the second place we sympathize with the workingmen, who are forced to fight for better conditions for themselves and their fellowlaborers in the face of the greatest odds, and who by the very nature of the case are the "under dogs" in the struggle. With Lin coln we believe "that labor is prior to and above capital and deserves by far the greater consideration." We know that under our laws as now administered the reverse con ditions exist. The railroads are safe whatever happens. Should they go into the hands of receivers the government will take charge of them and after putting them on their feet will hand them back to their owners again. Should the men fail they are doomed to lose their chance to work at their chosen vocation, and may become destitute with their families with no patern al government to put them back in to prosperity. Their occupation is a most hazardous one at the best. We say this without attempting to discuss the question of who forced the outbreak of hostilities. As a rule when war breaks out there are underlying causes which make the outbreak inevitable and the details of the first outbreak are merely in cidental. The only solution possible now that justice may be done to allfrom parties is by intervention of theplank proper authorities to bring about a settlement, and we hope that this will speedily come. Eddy is traveling about the state using his little hammer in trying to discourage politicians permitting a county option to be placed in the next republican state platform. This course may mean one of two things. Either F. M. E. does not at heart believe in his own preaching of the restriction of the saloon license evil or someone is making it worth his while to attempt to have the dominant party continue to ignore the livest question now clamoring for solution in this state. Conditions coming to light stamp Diaz* government as the foulest kind of a despotism, which makes the tyranny of Russia appear mild in comparison. All state officials are appointed by the "President" and all county officials by the governors. Petty criminals, poor people and Indians are sold into slavery to the big plantations, on which conditions are so revolting that the former slaves of the south were tenderly cared for in comparison. The returns from this slave traffic go to enrich the officials and their henchmen and it is charged that the war de partment gets a big share of this If there ever existed any conditions that warranted inter vention from the "Big Sisters" such appears to obtain in Mexico. It would seem intolerable that such conditions should be permitted to exist at the very border of this supposed greatest champion of human freedom on earth.
