flBS 3 1 HI. Ik Do Yoii Want the Best? Of Course, Then Try SLEEPY EYE. From the Herald: Mrs. F. Koehne and daughter Minnie left for Colorado Springs Saturday af ternoon, where the little Minnie expects to regain strength and perhaps her form er health. A delightful picnic at the Cotton wood river ia honor of Dr. J. W. S. Gal lagher of Winona, was enjoyed by his friends Thursday evening. Commander Barcus of the C. & N. W. bridge force on this section of the road laid a new freight platform this week and now the freight men look much pleasanter. Mrs. M. P. Montgomery chaperoned a picnic party of Brooklyn and Mud town young folks to the Cottonwood river Wednesday where a delightful time was spent just below the Windhorn bridge. The Maccabees initiated a large class Wednesday night and will hold a spec ial meeting Monday night to accommo date a number of others who wish to be come members of the order. Mr. and Mrs. Von Hagen and family returned Monday night from their east ern tiip in Wisconsin and Illinos. Mr. Wm. Somerville, father of Sena tor Somerville, who has been spending a few d&ys with his son returned to his home in Viola, Minn. Admiral Dewey has declined to be come particeps crimiuis to a $ 100 a plate dinner. And yet some people still insist that he is a Republican. It is now suggested that Mr. Alger was retained in the cabinet so long be cause he "knew too much." But the popular impression outside of Washing ton is that he knew too little. A trust ia now being formed to con trol the entire coffee product of the world. If something is not done to head off this insiduous growth, the wa ter and air supply of the world will be some day dished out by a trust. Inasmuch as the war in the Philip pines is costing the United States more than million dollars a day, the desire ol the people to have it hurried to a close is perfectly natural but there is nothing in sight to indicate that it will be grat ified soon. Assistant Secretary of War Meiklejohn is ambitious to succeed Senator Thurs ton from Nebraska. It will be necessary for him to draw the line sharply be tween his responsibility and that of his superior in the acts of his department be fore he can hope to succeed. Elihu Root the new secretary of war may not know much about fighting, but he can shoot arguments and pleadings into poor Aguinaldo and his followers, and terrorize them with wcrds. If that doesn't fetch them to time he can tax up the costs, including his attorney's fees, and thus utterly bankrupt them. They will not be the first who have gone down before the irresistible charges of a New York lawyer. It is stated and may be taken for granted that the price of hard coal will be raised tins year abouc $1 per ton above the price paid lust year. Tl.e mine owners claim they have been losing money at the low rate of last year and the lake steamers prefer hauling ore. This of course has to be taken with a grain of salt, as it is unheard off, that the coal kings should have operated their mines for the public benefit. You may as well get ready to pay higher rates for your coal or do without them, if you can. The strike of the coal miners for higher wages is still on, but we have not heard of any raise in their wages. Alas, the poor mine owners. James Creelmau, the well known war correspondent for the N. Y. Journal writes as follows: "After having spent several months with our troops in the Philippines, I am firmly convinced that unless General Otis is removed and a competent general put in command the whole campaign will be a failure. I was in the Cuban campaign as well as in the Philippines, and I can say honest ly without the slightest prejudice that General Otis is much more responsible for the disastrous, humiliating condition of affairs in the east than General Shaf fer was for the calamities in Cuba. Minneapolis is soon to have one of the biggest linseed oil mills in the country and rumor has it that it will not go into the combine known as the American Linseed Oil Company. The new mill is to cost about $500,000 and it will have a daily capacity of 10,000 bushels of flax. It will be of great advantage to the northwest if the new mill can withstand the pressure which will undoubtedly be brought to bear by the combine. JOH N Dispatches received from San Fran cisco announce the landing of forty-five sick members of the Thirteenth regi ment, from the transport Morgan City, together with nearly five hundred other sick from the various volunteer and reg ular organizations now at Manila. No crowd greeted the veterans. Those in power made no arrangements for the re ception of the veterans. Surrounded by the usual crowd of dock loafers, the men' limped, slid or fell off the gangway. The ship's hospital corps was totally inadequate. The San Francisco Exam iner says, "The landing of the men was a sight never to be forgotten. There was not a jaunty step in the entire crowd not a face that bore evidence of health." The men will be cared for at the Presid io hospital until able to travel.—Broad Axe. WOMAN. When a girl gets married the women inquire "how her mother took it," as though it was a funeral. A wedding isn't perfectly satisfactory to the women unless it cost so much money they can abuse somebody after ward for spending so much. A woman has few friends who do not wonder, when her engagement is an nounced, if she used hypnotism. The world is getting easier for the women. They can buy everything cooked, everything ready-made, and men are becoming more subdued every day. An Atchison woman is so fond of writing notes that she sends one upstairs to her husband to tell him that break fast is ready. An Atchison woman gave a party re cently at which there was to be no gos sip or "criticism" of any one else. The guests left at 9 o'clock in order to talk about the hostess at the next corner. Another old girl in town has joined the Pit-a-Pat society. The society's members are women whose hearts act strangely at the approach of man.
