State Has 800,000 Acres cf Timber The area of mcrchantable timber on Vermont farms in 1020 repjrt ed from 13,247 farms, was 473,717 acres, according to a United States department of agriculture report received by W. G. Hasùngs, state forester. As this is about half of the farms in the state, the correct area would be probably above 300, 000 acres, Mr. Hastings calcul..tes. The value of forest produets used on the fami, includi ng cord wood, fence posts, and lumber froni logs produced on the farm is re pcrted for 19J9 at $2,095,451 on a basis of reports from fi!) 3 percent of the farms in the state. The value of lumber and plup wood produced bere and actually sold during 1919 was $32,934,030, ac cording to figures prepared by the suue iorester. If the value of the forest pro duets used on ali the farms in the state for 1919 is estimated at $3, :;0(),000, the total for lumber and pulp wood sold and used on the farm is over $30,000,000. According to the state forester's figures, the value of ali the dairy produets produced in the state dur ing that year was $2,7207,813. On this basis, the lumber industry ex ceeds the sale of dairy produets in importance, and lumber becomes a more important item than dairy produets, potatoes and orchard fruits put together. i ie vr.lue oi v ermont's lumbel could be increased many time over in a decade or two if the lumber were comnletelv finisti d before shipping, instead of b inr shipped raw, in Mr. Hatiting's op inion. ihis inerease could ti e se- cured in the time piven by the ex penditure of the sum of $10,000 on a " est department, Mr. Hasting stated.
