4 Society Items. Mrs. Hammond, of Texas, is visiting her sister, Mrs. Joseph Brantly. Mrs. Clifton E. Powell, of Little Rock, is sojourning for the summer at Ocean Grove, New Jersey. Misses Sarah Blair and Hannah Kinsky of Vicksburg, are spending the summer at Coopers Wells, Miss. The daughter of Hon. Henry Mul drow, with her friend, Miss Price, of Celumbus, Miss., is visiting Mrs. Ewing, of Aberdeen, Miss. Miss. Louise Muldrow has been spending some months in Washington since her father has occupied the office of Assistant Secretary of the Interior. Mme. Smirnoff nee Miss Nellie Blow, of St. Louis, and widow of the late Mr. Smirnoff of the Russian Embassy of Bra zil, is now at Bar Harbor for the sum mer with her little daughter Etelka. Miss Georgia Waters is now in Lon don, England, and will shortly sail for home. Miss Waters’ year abroad will expire about the first of October, when she will be gladly welcomed to social circles in this city. Among the charming Southern fami lies sojourning for the summer at Bar 1 larbor is the family of Gen. Preston, of Lexington, Ky. The daughters, Miss 1 reston and Miss Jessie, are types of well-bred Southerners, while Mrs. Pres ton is in every way a most refined lady. Mis. John King, of Helena, who has been visiting relatives in this city,.has gone for a few weeks to Armstrong Springs. With Mrs. King goes her bright little daughter. Mrs. King has so often dispensed a graceful hospitality to our citizens in her beautiful home in Helena that they will be interested in learning of her movements. ' Mrs. Harvey Walter has returned bom her Friars Point plantation to her Home in Holly Springs. With her have returned also her daughters, Misses bene, I earl and Anna, with the little granddaughter, Addie, the child of Col Myers, of Jackson. Mrs. Walter is the widow of Col. Walter, the noble Presi dent of the Howard Association, who with his three sons, died at their posts in Holly Springs during the epidemic of yellow fever some eight years since. The young people from New York, St. Louis and Little Rock are having it all their own way at the Crescent Hotel, Eureka Springs. Miss Elkins, daughter of Mr. Stephen Elkins, of New York, is, we learn, one of the most intellectual young ladies of the party. Mr. Mc- Creery, of St. Louis, has also been an addition to the young circle. Miss Daisy Brockmire is described as bright and “straight as a little soldier,” while Miss Lillian Brown, of Van Buren, has many pleasant things said of her courtesy and grace. Miss Grace Dodge, of Little Rock, from our “rose-bud garden of girls,” is yet held back from an intro duction to the gayeties of social life by not being formally “out,” while Messrs. Roots and Norton, of Little Rock, with young Church and Scanlan, of St. Louis, complete the happy circle of young peo ple, who get up germans, play games and race for prizes in a regular English country house fashion. The marriage ceremony of Miss Lula Thomas and Mr. Harry Edmonson, of this city, was performed last Wednes day, August 4th, in the presence of a large concourse of friends. The bridal couple presented a very handsome ap pearance standing under an arch of flowers, in the parlors of the bride’s mother. Ihe dress of the bride was of cream colored ottoman silk, made en tram and trimmed very beautifully with small pearls. The veil’s illusion, the bri dal boquet ferns,tuberoses and whiterose buds. A little nephew and neice stood on either side of the arch, while Mr. Chipley and Miss Ada Marshall stood also near in the capacity of groomsman and bridesmaid. A relative of the bride, Rev. Mi. Thomas, from lowa, assisted in the ceiemony. As the solemn words ended that united this well-know voting pair, they were surrounded by friends, who proffered glad congratulations, fl he fair bride presented a lovely ap pearance as standing under the bell of tuberoses, she smiled her thanks for the many kind words spoken. Refieshments were served in the din ing-room later, and at 11 o’clock the bride donned her traveling dress, and the married pair left tor a bridal tour in the Last. A number of handsome pres ents were placed upon two tables in the s'tting-room, evincing both the taste and generosity of friends.
