Yes, Better Roads.
Judge Hutchins of Augusta
was here the first of the week
enroute to Cotton Plant to look
after some road building being
done there. The Judge is doing
everything possible to give us
better roads and we are sure that
before he will have entered upon
the duties of his second term
evervone in the county will be
talking about Judge Hutchins and
the good roads that have been
constructed under his adminis
tration. He has already been in
strumental in the purchase of a
tractor road engine and other
machinery for Overseer Phillips
of Cotton Plant and has recent
ly turned over to overseer, J. F.
Bronte, eight convicts which
the latter gentlemen is now using
to great advantage. We know
that better roads are bound to
come with such men as Hutchins
for judge and Bronte for over
seers.
The effort of a certain clique
to make a political issue of A
mendmentNo. 12, to be voted on
next November, has fallen flat.
‘‘Betterschools’’ bids fair to be
come the most popular slogan
ever voiced in the state, and the
ambitious office seeker who has
the temerity to oppose education
al progress is certain to be rele
gated to deepest oblivion, the
wise ones say.

More Politics.
Hon. Smead Powell of Camden,
the political gossips say, will be
a candidate for the United States
Senate two years hence to suc
ceed Joe T. Robinson. Former
Governor Donaghey has already
announced his intention of enter
ing what promises to be the most
interesting senatorial marathon
ever pulled off in the state. It is
also rumored that Senator Clarke
will have opposition in the person
of Justice W. F, Kirby.

At the meeting of the Arkan
sas School Directors' Association
to be held at the state capitol
May 30 plans will be formulated
for the campaign in favor of A
mendment No. 12. It is expect
ed that at least 400 directors will
attend this meeti ng.
The average pay of a school
teacher in tnis state is less than
$36.00 per month. It is absurd
to expect capable men and women
to remain in a profession so illy
paid. Over 1,000 teachers are be
ing forced to enter other voca
tions every year. Amendment
No. 12 will provide a means of
paying a decent wage to teachers
and securing for Arkansas
schools the best talent available.
