GIVE THE BOYS AND GIRLS A CHANCE. Schools may not make men and women, but they will always help. Certainly the lack of educational advantages will not make men and women. Because the little low schoolhouse with the slab benches land two-by-four black board has turned out strong men and noble women, it does not fol low that they would not have been even stronger and nobler and have had greater influence for good if they had had better advantages in their youth. Be cause your hero, perhaps, learn ed his letters for himself by a flickering fi**e of light wood knots and got most of his learning in the “School of Hard Knocks,” it does not follow that there is no, better way of training men. All the evidence agrees that the more of opportunity, the more of cul ture, there can be put into the life of a boy or a girl, the better will be his or her chances of de veloping into the worthiest and most uselful type of manhood and womanhood. We believe, with Elbert Hubbard, that it is a good thing for a boy to have had the privilege of warming his feet cold mornings on the ground where the cows lay the night be fore; but we also believe that it is good for him to have had the privilege of going to a school house made neat and bright and cheerful without and within, and of advancing from that school house to higher institutions of learning where he can breath the air of academic inspiration, ab sorb the traditions and ideals of his college, and acquire all that it can give of learning and cul ture and breadth of thought.— The Progressive Farmer. THE DOCTRINE OF DEMOCRACY In an address at the democratic banquet at St. Paul on June 1. 1911, Joseph W. Folk defined his | idea of democracy in these words: “Democracy is a religion; the religion of brotherhood among men and of equal rights for all. i It is a religion that would de mand more of the Golden Rule and less of the rule of gold in government and in our daily lives. It would not array class against class, but would protect the rights of all by having each respect the rights of the other. It would not attack weatlh honestly ac quired, but would wage unending war against the Driveleges that produce tainted riches on one side, and undeserved poverty on the other side. It would pro tect property rights, but would recognize the fact that property rights are best protected by pre serving inviolate the public rights. It would not combat men, but the evil that men do It would seek as a remedy for existing evils, not less govern ment for the people, but more government by the people. It would pi: ce conscience ubove cunning, and iho public wood above pr vate greed. It wo ild not offer a man an advantage in the shape of a subsidy, or bounty, or protective tariff, enabling him to make money at the expense of his fellowmen, but it would as sure him that it would give no one else such a special privilege over him. It would guarantee to a!! an equal opportunity to live and labor and enjoy the gains of honest toil. “This is democracy as I under stand it.” GALE NEWS We are having some cool weather now which has resulted in a considerable detraction of Prof. Abbot time from his classes on account of having to blow his nose so much.
