NEVADA COUNTY ARKANSAS. FRIDAY. MAY 23. 1913. NUMBER ? PARCEL POST Mr. Editor: „ i„ the Four States Press because there are more coming into the o ffi c e :than goes out. Well! What ere are; Swho is to blame.' avs it is because the mee ts do not advertise. Maybe I do not know how it is in rkana. but 1 do know that .0f the merchants of Pres who put up a sad wail be e the people here purchase , outside firms are them >s to blame. They advertise fact that it is a good thing „ to some other town to trade. No. Not in the papers; but example. Go down to the ght Depot, look around and will find that when the gro wants a piece of furniture he i not patronize any of the e merchants, but sends to e outside firm who will sell thing from a toothpick to a ishing machine, and buy the eof furniture wanted. When wife of some of our mer nts wants a new dress, or a r hat, they go to Little Rock tome other place and come at church with a new “aston nent” which no Prescott mer nt or milliner ever had it in :k. hey tell us that it is a bad lg for the people to patron a mail order house, and at the le time they give an order to le Texas, or Missouri firm for ir printing, and thev are well as.’d when they “get stung.” sse same men talk about legi* ate business and score cer 1 mail order houses in Chi 0, Kansas City, St. Louis, w Orleans, and say that the iple are cutting their own oat when they send their ney to them for goods. As argument they tell us that ►se people who are running Be houses never help the town any way. Well that may be and a good argument. But w about the houses they pat lize? Have you seen any of i good effects that have come Prescott by the printing es Jlishments they have been tronizing? Have the Whole* e firms of Chicago and other cities who have put in a mail or der department and will sell any thing from a paper^of pins to an entire outfit for the “Newely Weds," with all the necessaries for “Baby" from birth till he is ready for the license and preach er, arid are called “legitimate" and are patronized by the mer chant and his family. I ask have you seen any donations from them to the needy of the town or the benevolencies that have been kept flourishing for the good of the communitv? If not then would it not be a good thing for the merchants of Prescott to cease advertising these outside concerns, or keep still when any of the common people follow the example they are setting? We have heard somewhere about a jewel that is more rare than the diamond, more beauti ful than the pearl, richer than the ruby, possessed by fewer people than even these rare, and beautiful gems, yet can be had by the poorest of men, can be possessed by the most humble of women, and when once obtain ed, shines with a luster which is never dimmed, and ail the world gaze upon its possessor with envy and wonder. It is tne jewel of CONSISTENCY. REDUCED RATES Little Rock and return, $3.90 account Annual Meeting Arkan sas Medical Society. Tickets on sale May 19th and 20th, good for returning May 25th. Few, Presiding Elder “For devotion to duty, loyalty to truth as he sees it, sincerity of purpose genuine worth, no man, perhaps, in the Little Rock con ference stands higher than Rev. B. A. Few, the. present (and for the past three years) presiding elder of the Texarkana district; and few command a stronger or better influence than he. As a preacher, he is able and effect ive; as a man he is honest, truth ful, aggressive and courageous. With his mind once made up that a thing is right he plants himself squarely in its interest and de fense and nothing can swerve him from his conviction of duty con cerning it. “He is, inherently, as well as by cultivation, a man in the h ghest and truest sense of the | term. He comes from a good old ' southern pioneer stock—that * ( race of men through whose match less courage, fortitude, endurance and energy the great western wilderness was transformed in to the land of milk and honey it is today; and he has never by word, act or deed shown himself unworthy of such noble lineage. “Expediency,, has little favor with him, and “policy” has no place in his vocabulary. He is actuated by lofty motives and a purpose to make men and women better, and to this end he is de voting his lilfe. Others may look upon the Christian ministry as a worldly profession by which to obtain a livihood, but with him it is a calling of the highest and most sacred character. Brother Few was partially reared near here, and it was from Texarkana nearly two decades ago that l«o went into the ministry. “While rated as one of its ablest and best preachers, it is perhaps his rugged honestv, sincerity of purpose and unusual courage and strength of character that give him hia greatest weight in the Little Rock conference. With good people Bro. Few is popular;' with bad people no good preach er ever remains long *in favor. If all preachers were of his type Christianity would receive more attentionjat the hands of thought ful men of the world than it now does: might take on new life and flourish like a green bay tree in stead of remaining the “cold for mal dead think” it now is in most parts of the country.”—Texar kanian, 1905. -.— ' -- NOTICE I will hold the regular quarter ly examination for the purpose of ascertaining the qualifications of the teachers of Nevada coun ty at Prescott, June 19 and 20.
