Ferguson, Commissioner of Agriculture. Frequent but shallow cultivation of cotton during July and August is a neans of increasing the yield of lint hat many growers overlook. Shallow cultivation repeated at inervals of seven to ten days serves a threefold purpose. It kills weeds, it keeps tiie surface soil in good tilth, and. wlmt s of far more importance, it main tains a dust mulch which retards evap oration and holds the moisture in the soil until needed by the cotton. Co pious rains fell lately and just now .here is plenty of moisture in the 'round, tint it will not stay there long unless it is conserved. No effort should l.e spared to hold the moisture now available in the soil- A dust mulch is the best known method. When cotton is growing rapidly and ■jetting fruit it must have an a bund nice of water. It happens that ideal '•rowing weather is also favorable for evaporation of moisture, especially im period immediately following a min when flic sun comes out bright and hot mid hakes the ground. Water evapo rates faster from a sun baked soil than I from any other. Kvpry observant farm ,.r has not iced how quickly crops some times wilt after a rain, which fact eon- I vinces that a light rain may do more damage than good This would not „lway be the case if the land was cu! tivated shallow immediately after the . ra'n and the dust mulch restored, there would be little loss by evaporation, and lhe rain would benefit rather than in jure the crops Frequent cultivation serves another purpose where the hell weevils are present. ThOfe pests are knocked to th ground by agitating the s'alks and hundreds are covered up and smother ed SI'TTOS SCHM’S Klilcr M• i<nly preached at the Naz ilr, ne church here Saturday night and Sunday j. k (Sarrett and son, Norman left Sunday for Highland where they will -pend several weeks gathering elberfa p< *aelies.
