FLOOD AND FIRE
AT HOT SPRINGS
Water Nine Feet Deep, Rages
Down Central Avenue.
Marquette Hotel and
Other Buildings
Destroyed.
Hot Springs. May 14.—Hot Spring
city of a number of disasters during
its history, was stricken today as
never before. Water and flames united
in a general devastation that left
and disaster.
The number of dead is not known.
Water in torrents, raging like mad.
split the city into three sections
Flame followed.in the path of the flood
and night fell before any accurate
summary could be made. There was
not a body at the morgues late to
night, but there were rescues, the
heroism of which would justify great
honors and some of the rescuers be
lieve that all their efforts were not
effective.
Tlie flood was created in the upper
basin of the mountains of Hot Springs
from a veritable cloudburst. About
4 :flo o'clock after terrific rains there
came a slight flow of water through
Central Avenue from the junctions of
Whittington and I’ark at the north
end of Central. There had once before
been an overflow condition before, but
the first appearance of the water to
day did not cause much alarm.
While this torrent of water was
raging splitting the city into three
sections so that neither could com
municate witl^ the other, fire broke
out in the Grand Iiapids furniture
store in the Gan Gaines block on Cen
tral Avenue.
The Fire Department was at a dis
advantage because rivers were raging
on both streets surrounding the burn
ing buildings, but the firemen battled
through as best they could and kept at
the task. The Rosenthal shoe store,
the American Express Company. Dixie
cafe and the Oliver Finne grocery all
were early victims of the flames.
Then the Marquette hotel, the loss of
which could not he well spa red by
this resort was a complete loss.
The electric light plant, through
flood and lightening was put out of
commission early, but there was also
some heroism there when men of
courage took a chance and braved
dangers to get the lighting service re
stored as early as possible.

TOO MUCH FOR TOO LITTLE !1
That is your experience when you buy inferior
foodstuffs. You consume too much food in order to
yet the required amount of nourishment.
Loading the stomach down is injurious to health.
But people who buy inferior foodstuffs have to load
the stomach or go short on strength.
When you buy at this store you avoid that neces
sity. You get standard goods of known purity—the
foodstuffs that contain the maximum amount of
nourishment—the food that gives you the strength to
accomplish the daily tasks of life.
Try this store for results that satisfy.
