Brownsville, Texas, Oct, 24.—It was reported at Fcrt Brown at 8:15 o'clock tonight that twenty United States In fantrymen stationed at the scene of last Monday’s wrick, six miles from here were attacked by Mexican band its. Two troops of cavalry left Fort Brown at top speed for the scene. This incident, and the killing of one Mexican crossing the Rio Grande with a companion, who were ordered by a detachment of the Sixth cav alry under command of Captain Has san to halt, but failed to do so, are the only occurrences during the past twenty-four hours, which may be < barged to bandit activities, accord ing to reports received at Fort Brown. One Raider is killed. Captain Hassan said the Mexican raider was killed near the Mercedes canal head gates at 10:15 o’clock Sat urday night. The cavalry patrol saw two men attempting to swim the river on a horse from the American to the Mexican shore. Reports were current today that General Eugenio Lopez, the 24-year old commander of the garrison at Matamoros on the Mexican side of the river, who replaced General Emilalio Nafarrate had disarmed all troops in Matamoros in an effort to ascertain if any of his men were participating in raids tc» the American territory. Blocksom of t'ie Third cavalry commanding the Brownsville district, Colonel Bullard of the Fourth infantry, and Col. Jos. A. Blocksom of the First infantry held a confer ence tonight at Harlingen. With the arrival of the Twenty-eighth infantry there will be 5,000 soldiers in the Texas lower border country. This in cludes three complete regiments of infantry, two of cavalryr and thiee batteries of artillery, besides an avia tion detachment. The disposition of infantry along the border contemplates making head quarters for the Twenty-sixth and a machine gun company at Harlingen; one battalion at San Benito and one battalion at Mercedes. Regimental headquarters of the Twenty-eighth in fantry will be at Mission, where one battalion and one machine gun com pany will be stationed, while an addi tional battalion will be at Pharr and one at Donna. The Twenty-sixth infantry in com mand of Colcsiel Bullard will be sta tioned between Villa Neuva and Pro gijsso, thirty-five miles from here • while the twenty-eighth will serve- j the territory from Progresso tfe La- : Gruella. The Fourth infantry will continue* to make headquarters at Fore Browns ville.
