In eastern Galicia, north of Koniut chy, the Russians have attacked and tresli battles are in progress. The Russian artillery, long inactive from lack of shells, played an im portant part in the defeat of the Aus tro-Gennans at Kenlutchy. For two days a rain of iron was thrown into the German positions, and Berlin says officially that they were turned into a crater field. The Russians carried three lines of German trenchces and Koniutchy. which was strongly fortified, and also advanced to the Koniutchy stream south of the village, which Is on the Zlota Lipa river. Around Brzezany the fighting was moat bitter, and Berlin says that 1C Russian divisions were thrown for* ward. The Russians carried the for tified Teuton positions at several points in facte of a desperate resist ance by Austria, German and Turk ish troops. Minister of War Kerensky, who led the Russian revolutionary army in its attack, in a message to Premier Lvoff. says that the offensive "proved to Rus sia and the entire world its fidelity ,to the revolution, and its love for lib erty and country." The premier has authorized Minister Kerensky to give the regiments which participated in the fighting of July 1, red revolution ary flags, and the name "Regiments July first." On the western front there has been little activity. But the British and Germans have carried out raids in tho area around Lens and northward. On the Aisne front, between Corny and Allies, the French have regained a line of trenches from the Germans after spirited fighting. In the Trentino. south of Riva, the Austrians have attacked Italian po sitions between lavke Garda and the Ledro valley. Rome reports that all the Austrian efforts were checked with losses. Venice has been again attacked by Austrian airplanes. Italians raided Triest, in reprisal. Japan To Aid Russia. Copenhagen.—Finnish newspapers say that Japan has offered to support the Russian government in the work of organizing the democracy and in the reorganization of the army.
