Ushered Out of Business The Chicago Creek resort is no more. Judge Whiting and Marshall O'Rourke put a quietus to the reign last Monday. Ed Corbett, who has been making his home up there for the last four months, was sentenced to six months in the county jail. Mrs. Greye, the landlady, was fined SSO and costs; Myrtle Burdette, an inmate, was fined $25 and costs, and Hazel Wood es caped by promising to leave the city. All three of the women left Tuesday morning with the promise that they would not return. Corbett is serving out the sentence imposed. Tlyere was lively doings at the Chi cago Creek resort last Saturday after noon. People for a distance of half a mile each way witnessed the dis graceful proceedings, and the in mates carried on in such a manner that it became necessary for the land lady, Mrs. Greye, to send for Marshal O’Rourke and Night Watchman Libby. Mrs. Greye and her two daughters, Myrtle and Hazel, are the occupants of this resort. They have been there for the last eight months and during that time there has been any amount of complaint as to the manner in which operations were carried on. On one occasion the city council voted unanimously that this%lace must be closed, but the occupants only lent a deaf ear to the demand. The trouble started about 5:30 in the afternoon. Miss Myrtle and her lover, Ed Corbett, a young fellow who is better known as Young Corbett, had been to the city, and when they returned they were loaded down with firewater. Both carried a glorious jag, and at the same time a dignified one. They were not in condition to allow anyone to make fun of them, and as for being reprimanded, why that was simply out of the question. No sooner had they arrived at the premises than the mother proceeded to upbraid her daughter for her fool ish actions. She ordered Young Cor bett to leave the premises and never return. Then the trouble started proper. Myrtle seized her mother and proceeded to hand her a few upper cuts. Hazel tried to protect the mother and Young Corbett seized a chair and made for the scene of com bat. He landed his weapon across the face of Mrs. Greye, with the result that her face was cut under the eye and across the nose. By this time Hazel waa bombarding Young Corbett, and Myrtle went to the assistance of her lover. She grabbed Hazel by the hair of the head and dragged her outside A YOUNG LADY'S LIFE SAVED. At Panama, Colombia, by Chamberlain's Colic. Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. Dr. Chas. H. Utter, a prominent phy sician of Panama, Colombia, in a recent letter states: “Last March I bad as a patient a young lady 16 years of age, who had a very bad attack of dysentery. Everything I prescribed for her proved ineffectual and she was growing worse every hour. Her parents were sure she would die. She had become so weak that she could not turn over in bed. What to do at this critical moment was a study for me, but I thought of Chamber lain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy and as a last resort prescribed it. The most wonderful result was effected. Within eight hours she was feeling much better; inside of three days she was upon her feet and at the end of one week was entirely well.” For sale by J.J, Sherwin. New Train to Texas. There it was that Hazel set up an unearthly howl, and some passers-by at once came to the city and notified the authorities. When Marshal O’Rourke reached the seat of war things had quieted down somewhat, but the smoke of bat tle had not entirely disappeared. Cor bett was walking around as proud as a peacock, and declared that he was the master of the situation. It did not take him long to learn otherwise, because the marshal took a hand and when the finale came Corbett and Myrtle were in the city jail. There they remained until Monday morning when they were taken before Magis trate Whiting. Siftings has called the attention of the city authorities to the disgraceful actions of the denizens of this joint so often that it appears to be a waste of words to say anything further. Every resident of this city knows that the law is being violated, and ninety nine per cent, of these residents are willing and anxious that the law should be invoked 1n a stern manner to rid the community of this disgrace ful resort. Across the road from where this house of ill-repute stands is the sacred resting ground where the dead are buried. Many of these citizens have friends and relatives who are buried there, and it is a shame that this joint has not long ago been compelled to close its doors. Lit tle children,' just growing into woman hood, are compelled to pass this place and the actions of the members of the shack would cause gray-haired people to blush with shame. It was only a ew days ago that two little girls, not jver twelve years of age, were seen peeping in at the windows at the louse. They had seen the girls run ning around the premises and were luite naturally curious as to what the nside looked like. It is stated that Mrs. Greye does lot own the ground upon which the ■abin stands and that the owner noti led her that he would not tolerate the nuisance. No one questioned the assertion that the Chicago Creek joint was a house of ill-repute. The only question was how could it be proven. No one vol unteered to give testimony Regarding the same and thus the city marshal and city attorney were hampered. But after the disgraceful proceed ings which were carried on last Sat urday afternoon the good citizens of this community demanded that the place be forever closed, and that at once.
