MARI HUGH, Postmaster. LEADING THINKERS OPPOSE SEX HYGIENE. The United States Commissioner I of Education has of late come in ior considerable criticism, because o! an indorsement, in his recent Annual Report, of s«*x hygiene for the public schools. This is not sur prising, in view of the widespread resistance to this attempted in novation in our popular education. Leading statesmen, educators, clergymen, and even physicians of national reputation, are on record as being uncompromising in their j opposition. Ex-President Taft, in addressing the graduates of the Pierce business School of Phila ! delphia, held that pursuit of edu cation in sex hygiene is full of j dangers, if carried on in the gen eral public schools. ‘I deny,'* he said, “that the so-called prudish | ness and avoidance of nasty snb ! jects in the last generation has i ever blinded any substantial num ! her of girls or boys to the wh ked ness of vice, or made them easier victims of temptation.” Governor Edward F. Dunne, of Illinois, in a letter addressed to the President of the State Uni versity, expressed the conviction that the teaching of sex hygiene “will induce rather than suppress immorality and unchasity.” ‘Personally, said Governor Dunne, “I would not permit ray young and innocent daughters to be sent to either a public or pri vate school where sex hygiene is discussed in public, in their hear ing and in the hearing of children of their tender age.” Ex-Governor Joseph W. Folk of Missouri, who is now such a prom inent figure in Federal investiga tion work, is on record as strongly opposed to this proposed innova tion. Bishop Charles P. Anderson, of Chicago, Rev. George P. Wil liams, D. D., of Philadelphia, Su perintendent Roncovieri of the San Francisco public schools, and President Tierney of Woodstock College, Maryland, are among the distinguished clergymen and edu cators who have registered their protests; while the objections ad vanced by such men as Dr. How ell T. Pershing, an alienist of na tion-wide repute, and Dr. Richard O. Cabot of Harvard Medical School, are highly signifeant, com ing as they do from trained think ers whose conclusions are based on citical observations. Friends of our public schools should hesitate long before indors ing a subject that * arouses such pronounced opposition from lead ing thinkers representing many shades of opinion, and most sensi ble persons will no doubt agree with those citizens who deplore the hasty action of the United States Commissioner of Education in indorsing teachings and theories that, if introduced into the public schools, would impair the useful ness of these institutions, by im pelling many conscientious citi zens to take their children from the public schools, as Governor Dunne declares he would do if sex hygiene taught.
