If you really have brains you are bound to have common sense. Democracy and socialism are both good and innocent words; but the devil may be raised with either. The only way for a man to get along is to hustle; but too often he neglects that, and argues and quarrels. The most interesting incident of a luncheon in Winnipeg, at which the Prince of Wales enter tained a large gathering of repre sentative men from all the West ern provinces, was the Prince’s announcement that he had arrang ed to buy a stock ranch in Alberta. It was also the most important announcement that the Prince made during his Western tour. It was received with warm applause while congratulations were shower ed upon Alberta visitors by those from the other provinces, upon the Prince’s choice. Another Mystery. Laboratory experiments conducted of late have shown that a candle fhune will become extinguished when the oxygen content of the atmosphere in which it is burning falls to about 45 per cent. Sulphur stops burning when nil but 13.5 per cent of the oxygen in an inclosed space has been exhausted. The case of charcoal, however, is notable. Combustion continues until only 0 per cent of the oxygen remains. Early Sewing Machine. Thomas Saint, an Englishman, ob tained a patent for the first sewing machine in 1700 in London. Tanner when be was chased by two black bears. Miss Georgia Leonard of this city, and Mr. Amsel DeWeese oi Rocky Ford, were married at Lajunta. They were to live in Rocky Ford. The greatest possible demonstra tion greeted Governor Peabody on his visit here. He stated that the wheels of deportation were started in these canons, and that after the dynamiting at Victor it was adop ted as the only means of establish ing peace in the Cripple Creek dis trict. He said, “You can’t cure small pox with pink tea, nor can you cure dynamiters by holding a prayer meeting.’* He stated lhai the warden of the penitentiary had identified forty-four of the men who were deported from that district as having served from one to three terms in the pen.
