Which Maddened Son
Meets Death.
New York.—Their mother's life the
stake, two brothers fought a desper
ate battle with a rifle and hunting
knife ill the dlinly lighted kitchen of
their home on the third floor of a tene
ment at No. 024 East Eighty-third
street. The younger brother, armed
with the rifle, fought to protect Ills
mother from her older son, who had
become Insane suddenly and threat
ened her life.

kel, twenty-three, shot and killed
Gustave, thirty-three, the insane broth
er, us tlie mother stood huddled in a

brother's body, kilting him almost in
stantly.
For months, Mrs. Anna Sehinkel,
sixty, tlie mother, told police she and
William had feared to sleep at night
because Gustave, acting queerly at
times, had brandished knives and
threatened to kill them. Only a few
days ago, William told the police, he
bought tlie rifle and kept it within
reach.
Struggle Before Tragedy.
Mrs. Sehinkel and William were
sitting down to supper in the kitchen
when Gustave, u leather cutter, burst
In and exclaimed: "I'm going to kill
you both I”
Then, according to Mrs. Sehinkel,
Gustave drew a loiig-hlnded hunting
knife and lunged at her. William
quickly thrust her Into a corner. Then,

five minutes, Gustave fell and broke
three ribs.

stant and, snarling with rage, William
told the police, lunged for his chest

ran to a corner of the kitchen and
snatched up the rifle he had left
standing there.
Gustave, still yelling, crouched for
another spring. This time William
aimed Ids rifle and fired four shots.
One bullet struck his brother close to
the heart. The others pierced his ab
domen. Gustave fell, dying in a few
minutes. Mrs. Schinkcl collapsed in
a chair.
Brother Admits Killing.
A few minutes later neighbors,
startled by the shots, crowded In with
Patrolman lJreen of Hast Sixty-sev
enth Street station. They found Wil
liam, rifle In hand, standing over Ids
brother's body
“Who did this?” inquired Breen, ms

Mother in Closed Trunk

closed trunk In the attic of her home,
the body of Mrs. Beala Withers was
found recently by her son, Charles,
aged fifteen. Mrs. Withers hnd not

discovery. She was divorced from her
