MONTE VISTA JOURNAL. EIGHTEENTH YEAR. A Fine Entertalamenat. The Toesday Afternoon Club started the ball rolling with a good program at.their Matinee races Tuesday afternoon and be tween four and five hundred peo ple went home from the fair grounds more than pleased with the entertaintent. The races were interesting and resulted as follows: Trotting race-—Geo. Zahnen, 1st; Luther Arthur, 20d, Half mile dash—Zahoen’s Sum mer, 1st; Ewing 2ud. Gentlemens' driving race — Luather Arthur, let; Dave Lewis 2ud. Relay race— Dorris, 1st; Happy Jack, 2nd. Running race —Nelle Duvie, on Tanglefoot, 1st: Mrs. Bauerle, on Red Clond, 2nd. Pouy ruce—Wiley, lst; Barber, 2ud., The base ball game between Del Norte and Monte Vista was closely contested aud resulted in a victory for Dal Norte by a score of 2 to 1. The playing of the Monte Vieta team surprised every oue, this being . the first time the players had been together on the dismond. Not s score was made on either side until the seventh inning. Bud McDonald and ‘*Happy Jack” Wilcox of Alamoea gave a clever exhibition of riding buck-‘ iIng horses. The Moute Vista band enlivened the occasion with music. Dave Lawson and Rudolph Ahrens returned home Tuesday after a 30-days’ trip through tue northwest. They spent several days in Salt Lake City and vari ous ponts 1n Utah und Oregon, took 1n the Exposition at Portland and went down the const to Cali fornin, thence to Santn Fe and home. Mr. Lawson says they had | n very enjovable trip and saw some good country but he thinks— | all things considered—that the Sun Luis valley is the best place to hive und has come buck perfect- Iy satisficd to stay. Mr. Lawson wns about ready to abandon the valley when he left on this trip and his revised opinon should be worth a great deal to diuumfiedi ones. 1 I'ne ball grounds at the clty‘ park has been put in nice obupol for the game this afternocon be tween Creede and Alamosa.
