The: South Side round-up will meet at ltangelv V*n Friday, June Ist. A. H- (’itITCHLOW, ntJ'i Captain. A(lcniion, Citizens ! There will be a meeting of taxpayers and others citizens interested in the i welfare of the county held at the court i house on Thursday evening next (May ’ :;lst at s o’clock, for the purpose of tak- ( ing htep.i to send a delegation to the j Western Slope congress, which meets at Glcnwootl on June Otli, 7th and Bth. The White River .National park and other matters affecting our interests j will he under discussion, and Rio Rlanco j county ought to he represented at the j congress. Ry order of Committee, j ♦ *>• Regular services at St. James church j to-morrow morning and evening. I »r. Bruner says the health of this region is disticssinglv good at the pres ent time. Baer Bros, drove in about four hun dred head ot lino young range cattle this week. Pilgrims for Four-Mile weiul their way through our crowded thoroughfares j every day. Lots of “Mexlcanos” around these j days. The shearing season brings them Into this section. A lile of old soldiers will raise the stars and stripes on the Park lljg pole on Decoration day—next Wednesday. With base hall games, shooting matches and glove contests on tfie tapis Meeker is becoming quite a sporting center. As will he seen elsewhere in this issue the Lily Park Stock-Urowers’ associa tion is asking for bids to cut atul stack a crop of hay. The Craig Pantograph speaks in llat tering terms of the hospitable treat- i ment accorded -the Craig ball players while in Meeker lately. Frank E. Sheridan “raised” one of I the finest lif not the finest) barns in the valley on his ranch the other day. Frank is always improving. The cool nights are holding snow up in tin* high places, and as a consequence the river is receding. We are not likely to have a very high stage of water this spring. “Now Snap, quit yer licking that; don’t ye know it’s poison. It’ll kill ye !” And the colonel was up three nights in succession with Snap, but pulled him through. And still they come ! Cards were re ceived here last evening announcing the approaching marriage of Reuben S. Ball and Nannie Owlngs. The event takes place at Power, 8. (’., Tuesday evening, May 29tli, 1894. Who'll be the next V Tito Methodists gave a delightful enterlaiument last evening and a snug sum was realized, which will be used in the crusade against the “flesh and the devil” now being carried on by that de nomination in this God-fearing com munity. Thomas Baker has been appointed local agent of the Colorado Humane society. The duties of the agent are to see that the laws against cruelty to animals are enforced, and a better selec tion than Mr. Baker could not have been made. An interesting glove contest Is being arranged between Tom Robinson of Craig, and Johnny Rlair of White River, the same to come off at Meeker on July sth. Ten ounce gloves will he used and a fine exhibition of scientific sparring is promised, ns both men are said to be very clever with their “dukes.” A liberal purse will be con tended for. William Pore of Pittsburg, l'a., who came iu last week to settle up the A. C. Graff estate, honored The Herald with a call before leaving for the east. Mi. Pore has been in this part of the I west before and has a good opinion of [ the country. For vents lie was promi- I nently connected with the iron and i j other business interests in the Smoky City, but is now retired on an ample fortune—enjoying the fruits of a well spent life. He is a gentleman of fine j I address and distinguished appearance; j is thoroughly posted on the issues of the ■ day and like all Pittsburgers believes in a liberal tariff. The arrangements for the entertain ment to be given bv the Odd Fellows next Tuesday evening are progressing i finely, and no pains are being spared to make it a befitting finale of the season’s , ! festivities. Aside from literary and musical productions of the highest or der the Dramatic club will produce the j laughable farce entitled “A Kiss in tin* I Dark,” and Professor J. D. Moog will discourse sweet strains from Strauss on his favorite instrument- the piano. j Agent Thompson of the Colorado Humane Society, returned to Meeker’ Wednesday after a trip to the western end of Routt countv. where several I cases of gross cruelty to animate have j j been reported of late. The guilty j parties, however, got wind «f Mr. ! Thompson's coming and skipped out. j hut he appointed an agent for the west ern end of Routt, and the State laws i against cruelty to animals will bo ch i' forced iu that section hereafter. , A meeting is called at The Herald office, at - p. m . on Monday, for the ; purpose of taking initial steps in the ' ' matter of properly observing the ap proaching Fourth. All those retaining ■ ja spark of patriotism within their , bosom are respectfully invited to be in attendance. After the Fourth of July ; meeting a session of the gun club will be held. Members and those interested in , field sports are urged to he on hand. Mr. and Mrs. David .Smith gave a 1 very enjoyable young peoples’ party on Wednesday evening, to which a goodly | number of the larger pupils of the Meeker school were invited: also a few of the older folks. The party was given in honor of Miss Julia McDowell, who | attended school here during the past , year. Miss Julia departed for her home near the mouth of classic Wolf creek i Thursday morning. w. E. Simpson's stature maj not g" j heavenward to a noticeable extent, but lie has a long head on his shoulders just the same. Yesterday he traded off his | topless barouche and fiery team of roans to Ike Raer for the Wagner property, corner Third and Market. As The Herald has repeatedly remarked in ! vestments in Meeker real estate are | gilt-edge, and the returns will come iu ; due time. | In nnother column will he found a’ call for a meeting of citizens for the 1 purpose of taking action looking to the matter of sending a delegation to the Western Slope Congress. As the ques tion of reducing the boundaries of the White River reserve is of vital interest • to tills county it is hoped that there will be a good turnout. J. M Cole visited the county seat Wednesday in quest of the water com missioner. whose presence is needed on , i I’iceance. Irrigating fluid is very scarce I iu this creek, and quarrelling over pri orities is the order of the day; hence a j little adjudication is necessary. Mrs. A. Eckel and Messrs. Frank 'Keel and 11. A. Wildhack were the ! sponsors at the baptism of Otto Henry, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Metz ger, at St. James church yesterday aft-1 ernoon. Rev. Ostenson officiating. Charley Walrad was in The Herald office long enough this morning to an- | nounce that he has the finest colt in the valley, the Hnyes horse being its sire. I Mr. and Mrs. Ike Baer and family ar rived in Meeker Thursday evening and will reside here for the summer. Mike Schneider came down from the North Fork this morning. Bids Will be received till June sth, 1894, by i John W. Lowell, superintendent, Lily, Colo., to put up this season's two cut-J tings of hay on the Lily Park ranch. I Wo will furnish two teams with feed 1 and harness for same, two hay wagons, • two mowers, two horse rakes, six pitch- j forks. Contractor to keep all in repair. Stacking places are convenient. Hay must he put up in lirst-class order. The two cuttings should amount to about 1,000 tons, and bids should be made at so much per ton of 512 cubic, feet, after .‘SO days’settling. jn2 Customer (to Mr. Isaacstein) —“The coat is about three sizes too big.” Mr. Isaacstein (impressively)—“Mine frient, dot coat make you so proud you will grow into it." —Harlem Life.
