Fairfield wits aide to he around town the past week, with the assistance of a pair of crutches. The festive swallow is making him self very offensive these days in build iujj nests of mud on nearly every house in town. Married —On Monday, May 23. I*W. I at the Miller House. George Haiti, of Hamrely. < 'olo., and Augusta M. HoUt.of Jer.-» v City, N. J., Justice Mow otlici ating. Mi. s iiith'-rlin, tlie Methodist preach er. favored iiis hearers with a line ad dress, Sunday evening, commemorative of Decoration Day and the deeds of the Northern arms. The school board lias concluded to open the s: In id library to the public, or j to those who will take proper care of the books, on one day of each week — Friday, from 1 to 2 p. in. The drought of the past month was slightly interrupted Thursday by a rain of small proportions in Meeker hut copi ous in the upper country. Give us some more, Mr. Jupiter Fiuvius. — Valentine Lodge. No. 17, I. O. O. F., , desires 'l*ll K llkhald% extend a vote h of thanks to the ladies and gentlemen h who so kindly tendered their services at Tuesday night’s entertainment. The bifurcated skirt has been intro duced in Meeker. Miss Dell Ferris is ' the heroine and as she rides a horse j like a centaur, makes a striking ligure astride the regulation cowboy saddle. J. 11. Durfee,a watchmaker of twenty years' experience, arrived in Meeker dur ing the week and struck a very good trade iii his line. He will be found at * the Meeker hotel duiiug the coming J week, alter which he will lake in the * lower White aud Ashley valleys. j Those «*f our readers who wish to buy 5 l looded horses should correspond with ' Mr. Chas. T. Limlierg, Leadviile, Colo., 11 who is disposing of the entire ••Quarter Circle I." brand. Most of these horses are from a s*>.ooo sire and high bred Kentucky mates, bee advertisement in another column. It is reported from Washington that the Interior department has authorized Colonel Ensign to re-examine and com plete his investigation of the White Liver ami Grand Mesa reserves, with a view to the modification of their bound aries—which, we presume, means less ening them. The work is to he com menced at once. Tuesday evening’s entertainment at the court house hall drew out a goodly number of our citizens, and they were well entertained with an excellent pro gram of vocal and instrumental exer cises, concluding with a very laughable farce. All those taking part did them selves proud, and lack of space prevents us giving a more extended notice. Decoration Dav was duly observed hero on Wednesday bv the old soldiers and citizens. In the morning the vet erans, accompanied by Rev. Oaten son, the choir of St. James and other vocal ists, repaired to the town park and with . appropriate ceremonies, inspiring music and a very able address by Mr. Oaten* sou, raised the national colors (draped in mourning) to half-mast. The prize light hilled fortheothof July will not materialize. Just as every thing was being satisfactorily arranged Johnnv Blair iiad to go out and look after his horses, but our local sports are ••dead game”—they’re raising a $7.5,000 purse and will try and have the Corbott- Jackson light come off here. When it conics to “raising’’ a purse Meeker throws dust in the eyes of such would be rival towns as New Castle, Hide, Craig and Escalante. John Carson, who was formerly in the livery business here, returned Monday after a year spent in vainly hunting for a better country. Mr. Carson was in southern and eastern Kansas; was pres ent at the lato “opening'’ of the Okla homa country and witnessed the suffer ings connected therewith—both before and after the opening; examined the country and found it over-rated: passed into Texas and looked over the northern and western parts of the Lone Star state; then took in New Mexico and Arizona; next Nevada, where he stoj>- ped awhile; then through Utah and; back to Meeker, where he has drove his tent pegs deep into the ground. He would have taken in some of the north ' ern and eastern states, but thought | there was no use hi visiting sections suffering under an epidemic of strikes, an over-dose of Cleveinudism and over • run with Coxeyites. Mr. Carson says ’ the White River valley offers men who , are willing to work anti “wait til! the i clouds roll by’’ more inducements to 1 stay with it than any section he has ’ i visited hi his travels. 1 11. T. Martin, of Denver, live slock 1 agent of the Santa Fe, was visiting Meeker and the White liver country generally in the early part of this wet k. soliciting live stock shipments for his road. Now since the new tunnel, of about two miles in length, on the Colo ratio Midland railway has been finished, cutting off eleven miles of their heaviest grade, ami taking into consideration that it is tlie shortest line f rom Ritle to Colorado Springs or Denver by eighty- I six miles, they propose to give the stock | shippers better runs than they have ever before had from this country, namely. Riile to Colorado Springs, in from I*> to !17 hours; Denver, in 18 to 20 hours, I and Pueblo, id to is houis. Mr. Martin says his road will furnish a special train for eight cars of stock and is anxious to show shippers what time they can make. Harry Abbott, who had a leg broken | two months ago, had so far recovered as : to resolve on a trip home to his in Middle Park. He left Meeker a few days ago in a road-cart, lJert McDaniel accompanying hiiu, on horseback, wl:h a hunch of horses. At the Coal creek bridge, barely live miles from here, the cart horse hacked the l ig. rider and all j into the stream, hut Harry, in his nearly helpless condition, managed to gain the bank. Frank Sheridan, happening to pass there shortly after, brought the un fortunate young man to town and sum moned medical aid. (Jut* of the bones broken on the first of April was found to have been again fractured, so Harry has postponed his trip indefinitely. Itio Blanco county is entitled to four I j delegates to the Western Slope? congress. I and they have been selected as follow?-. J F. E. Sheridan. J. IL Nimerlck. James | Hayes and 11. W. Tomlinson. Moulton and II \ j Wildhack were selected to represent! I the Meeker town government, and \V 11. Clark and James Lyttle will re pit sent the local lioard of trade, bat it i probable that only the last named two aud Mr. Sheridan will be in attendance —the rest will send ttieir proxies. Mr. William L. Lowell and bride (mention of whose marriage was re a cently made in Tin-: llkrald) were ■ guests at the Miller House during the ■ past week. Mis. Lowell (nee Rrad- J shaw) is a charming young woman who 1 moved In Denver’s b«n ton set prior to l her marriage, and will adit much to the social life of Lily Park, where the young couple intend taking up their j residence. Rev. J. M. Clark, brother of \V. 11. and Frank, was among the arrivals in Meeker this week. Mr. Clark is a promi nent minister of the Cumberland Pres- : byterian church in Southern Missouri ami is combining with his annual vaca-. tiou a visit to his brothers. He will ; preach in the Methodist church to-mor row evening. Last Saturday’s New York dispatches announce the arrival of L. 11. Walbridge ' and wife at the Imperial hotel, in that burg. Jloyd sent Tins Herald a private telegram stating that he was enjoying himself and was touching nothing but the “high places’’ in his travels. W. It. Clark, representing ttie live stock commission house of Southee. Kirk Jc Rouse, of Kansas Citv. was in the citv this week looking up cattle con signments. Mr. Southerlin, the Methodist spirit ual shepherd, left to attend the confer ence of that creed, to be held at Boulder this week. Judge Iliigus and Mr. J. C. Davis are due here about the loth. Otlil Follows’ Election. ,i. The semi-annual election of otlicers of Valentine Lodge, '■'****■'' No. 17. I. O. O. A cow-j boy ran onto a wild goose nest and fob- j bed it of three eggs, which he took j home ami placed under an old cat, who was ministering to the wants of a newlv ; arrived batch of kittens. In due season j three little geeselets made their appear-*! mice. The old cat viewed the newcom-j eis with suspicion but tried hard to be a i mother to them. She put up with their J oddities until they sought a convenient J ditch since which time sho lias lost all maternal interest in them, though she watches them f*>r hours at a time dis tuning themselves in water. They are 1 thriving niceiv.
