Marshal Tovey is down in the lower country looking after his asphaltum in terests. The road from the mines to Fruita will he completed the coming week, and shipments will then begin. The season for catching trout opened on the first of June, and many a rod and line that hasn't been used since last November was resurrected the past week in this vicinity, but the river is too high yet for good fishing. They pleaded guilty to making filial proof on their respective ranches in the upper country, and the park schemers can now do their worst. No eastern mail Thursday, Friday. Saturday, Sunday or Monday; Tuesday quite an installment arrived, and on Wednesday the clerks in the Meeker i postofllce were given an opportunity to “catch up,” much to the gratification of Postmaster Jollantgen, Assistant Kelly and the public generally. Yesterday morning a rain and snow storm, of projiortions enough to make the roads quite muddy, visited this sec tion. Last night it cleared up. and this morning all tender garden vegetables look very sick—ln other words we had a billing frost, and ice formed to a thickness of half an inch in some places. In a few weeks, namely July Ist. many of the star mail routes will change hands, that is so far as con tractors are concerned. Clarence Saw yer will succeed Jimmy VanCleef on the Rangely route, George Thayer will give way to a Pueblo party who has underlet the Buford contract to E. Gil ley. while the Rifie-Meeker-Axial line will likely he continued by Simp Harp. Many of our readers doubtless noticed a scantiness of paper in last week's is sue or had an inside with rather stale news, and no apology was offered for such an apparent carelessness. It can be told in a few words: The ready prints were stranded between New York and Chicago for several days, and high water, low water, or no water at all. The Herald had to he gotten out on time at all buzzards. The Western Slope Congress con vened at Glen wood on Wednesday, and doubtless concluded their labors yester day. A dispatch from there last even ing states that “a representative delega tion is on hand from Rio Rlanco county who will endeavor to get a resolution passed in favor of the reduction of the boundaries of the White River reserva tion. It is thought that it will cause considerable discussion and possibly a tussle.” Preparations for a Fourth of July celebration are steadily going on in our thriving little village. In the line of sports and amusements we will assure our visitors two or more “boss” races, several bicyclo races, a red-hot game of base ball, foot races of all descriptions and a grand pyrotechnic display in the evening. After which, the followers of the terpsichorean muse, will repair to the court house hall and "‘chase the * (lying hours with dainty feet/’ etc. etc. i A general invitation is extended to | everyone regardless of “color, sex or previous condition of servitude Dr. J.
