Representative Jefferson’s White river and Snake river bridge bills have passed second reading and their chances <*f iinal passage are favorable. The Teller Silver Republicans of Denver have nominated NVillard L. Ames, tlie noted county assessor of Arapahoe, for mayor. Tom Patterson and his crowd of political hucksteis, tried to rope the Denver Democracy into again support ing Me Murray for mayor, but Governor Thomas who is a resident and large tax payer in the capital city, objected, and the result is a straight Democratic ticket headed by Ilenry V. Johnson, formerly U. S. District attorney. The governor wisely observed that it was time for the Democrats to stand up and be counted. The army beef investigation is not panning out very well for the Alger- Eagan-Shafter crowd. A Salt Lake Tribune special from Frice, Utah, says the White River Utes have informed the Great Father at Washington that they wish to return to their former reservation on White river, and that they are going to return whether permission is granted them or not. The White river settlers may have something to say in the matter. Some of the Mexicans have become greatly excited because of tbe predic tion of Cecil Rhodes, that the United States would eventually absorb this en tire continent. The advantage in the absorption of Mexico by the United States would be all on the side of the Mexicans. It was true American grit that actuated Lady Curzon, the American wife of the viceroy of India. ’Tis a task worthv of the best efforts of any woman. Among the reforms promised by the new Spanish ministry is a new and stronger navy. With all her colonies, except the Carolines, which are on tfie market, gone, wbat on earth does Spain want with a navy? Some blowhards are really dangerous. The Tennessee tornado that killed three men and destroyed much property, for instance. Glory and territory come high; tbe appropriations already made by congress on account of our little difficulty with Spain almost reach the half billion mark, and the end is not in sight. Whatever else may be said about it tbe late congress cannot be charged with having been cheap. Some smart men in New York have been made to realize that George Gould is not a “kid,” but a genuine chip off the old Jay block. The Boston “printer’s devil,” who has Inherited $20,000,000 can hardly be called a “poor devil.” Rud. Kippling knew that we bought his books, but he would never have known how much the American public thought of him if he bad not bad that attack of pneumonia. Kaiser Billy has taken steps to pre vent Oerman officers being robbed by usurious nSoney leaders, which shows that a paternal government has ad vantages. .. It seems that while President Iglesias, of Costa Rica, is in Europe, on a pleasure trip, some of his enemies have been try ing to pull off a revolution at bis home. Even poor decrepid Italy is to get a slice of Chinese territory. Slowly but surely the Chinese Empire is nearing its end. After all, tbe most popular general is the general advance of wages now going on in various sections of the country. James Russell Lowell, wrote, in the celebrated Biglow Papers: “When after many battles past. Both, tired with blows, made peace at lost. What is it after all, the people get ? Whv taxes, widows, wooden legs and dobt.” It has been estimated that steamers are 20 per cent safer than sailing vessels. “The White Man’s Burden” gives the keyuote of the American Monthly Ue view of Reviews for March. The editor, in " l’he Progress of the World,” dis cusses the Philippine situation and American prospects in those islands, as well as the bearings of the rntitication of the Spanish treaty on the future of the Filipiuos. Coi. William Conant Church, editor of the Army and Navy Journal, contributes a sketch of Gen. El well S. Otis, whose efficiency in sub jugating the refractory followers of Aguiualdo is winning tbe admiration of the world. There are two articles on Philippine native types and character Utica, one of which was written by SenovCaroy Mom, editor of tbe Voz Espauola, of Manila. These articles are both illustrated from a remarkable •eries of photographs now published for the first time. Dr. William Haves Ward, who has recently returned from an extended journey through Porto Rico, contributes an article on present day conditions in that islaud, witli special reference to the effect of Ameri can occupation on the welfare of the people. Several of the young Cuban leaders in the reconstruction of their country are sketched by George Reno. This number of the Review also con tains articles on the late President Ifaiire, of France, on “An American Farmer’s Balance-Sheet for 1598,” and on “Characteristics and Possibilities of Middle Western Literature.” Swan’s Sheep—Nit. Through much effort and considerable expense the city marshal of Leadville, rescued two of five mountain sheep that were starving in the snow near Lead ville. Before help arrived three of the sheep had perished. The two rescu d were saved by careful nursing, and now comes Game Warden Swan and de mands thot the marshal shall surrender the sheep to the state, because the law provides that the capture of mouutain sheep is illegal. The marshal stands pat and will not give the sheep to Swan, Bglses .he is paid his price for the labor anb expenses. Swan apparently has a great penchant for interfering after the deed is done, whether the act be good or bad.—Gleuwood Avalanche. A Library in Two Books. It has been said that the Bible and Webster’s International Dictionary con stitute a good library; and while this seems to be a strong statement it is in a great degree true, for these two hooks constitute a source of knowledge that no single intellect can exhaust in a life time, and a fountain head from which all can drink and daily grow’ wiser and better. At any rate these books form the best foundation for every library, and iu reading, us in building, a good foundation is essential. They are also authorative guides, each in its sphere, the one, that the heart and life may not offend against God, and the other, that the tongue and pen may not offend against man. A close friend of Mrs. Cleveland’s tells this story of her in an anecdotal biography of the former mistress of the whilte house in the Ladies’ Homo Journal: “Mrs. Cleveland used to be somewhat sensitive over the general regret so freely expressed before the birth of the last child that there was no boy in the family. It seemed to her to imply a lack of appreciation of her three little girls. A friend, who is mar ried and has a son, visited the white house one day, and when the children were brought in she exclaimed: ‘What a pity they are all girls!’ Quick as a flash Mrs. Cleveland knelt, put her arms about the children and retorted: ‘That shows that you do not know how nice little girls are.’ ” Take your local paper— The Herald.
