Canfield, and Chas. Zaun, and C. C. Hawkins, town clerk: There being no quorum, council ad journed until Friday night, Oct. (1. C C. Hawkins, Clerk. Geo. F. Curtis, Mayor. Oct. 0, 1905. Council met pursuant to ad journment. Present, Mayor Cur tis, trustees, W. T. Bross, C. H. Canfield, Milton Spencer and Chas. Zaun and C. C. Hawkins, clerk. A petition for a sidewalk on Main street from Third street north to Roman property, was presented to the council. Upon motion, the sidewalk was ordered laid by the property owners, on the west side of Main street. The Treasurer’s report was pre sented and read by the Clerk, ac cepted by the council and ordered placed on file. The bond of James Smith for S3OO, for a saloon license, was read and accepted by the council. The Application of James Smith, for a saloon license for six months commencing October 5, 1905 and ending April 5, 190(1, was read and license granted. Upon motion of Zaun and second of Spencer, the Clerk was instructed to write to O'Brian & Rhoades that the reservoir had been dry for three weeks, await ing the action of their Agent to place the same in repair, and as yet there had beer, nothing done, and unless some action was taken by them at once, the Council would build a new reservoir and sue them for damages. Upon motion of Bross and second of Zaun, the Mayor was instructed to appoint a Committee of two, to make ariangements for ground on which to construct LOCAL ITEMS. W. D. Nelson visited l’aonia this week. Capt. Head passed through here this week on his way to Route county. Wm. Hart is building a nice six room residence on land just west of Joe Hogrefe’s place. Thos. Reeves, of frontier Co., Neb., drove into the valley this week coming overland. He ex pects to locate here. A. VV. Blanchard, brother of C. S. Blanchard, arrived from Burt, lowa, this week and will remain he having accepted a situation with his brother. Rev. Knight has been quite ill this week with a heart difficulty that may compel his removal from this place. His parishoners will hope that he secures speedy re lief. J. B. Killian shipped twenty cars of beef cattle to Kansas City this week. It was one of the finest shipments that has gone out of the Surface Creek valley this fall. Mrs. C. E. Springer this week sold a twenty acre tract to Philip Weston, of Breckenridge, Colo., for a consideration of SBSO. The place lies two miles north of Cedaredge. A large number of our ditch and reservoir companies are ar ranging to increase the capacity of a temporary Hose house and to construct the same without delay. The Mayor appointed Spencer and Zaun on that Committee. The following bills were au dited by the auditing Committee and presented to the Council and all voting “aye,” they were allowed as follows, and the clerk instructed to draw warrants on the proper funds, to-wit: — G. Curtis Mayor. It seems to be assured that the Rio Grande is to have a western outlet. The bond issue of $50,- 000,000 is floated and very soon construction gangs will be at work at both ends of the pro posed line. This will give Mr. Gould a direct line from the Pa cific to the Missouri river and will make the Grande a formid able competitor of the Union Pa cific. It is pretty hard to tell with which party the President is train ing these days. Democratic con ventions are endorsing his actions, democratic dailies are supporting his ideas, democratic politicians are suggesting him for another term. The fact is that the Presi dent is stealing the democratic thunder and is advancing their platform pledges more rapidly than anyone ever conceived was possible. Well, it is results we want, never mind what the me dium may be. Subscribe for The Newspaper. their reservoirs during the com ing winter to accommodate the in creased demand for water. This is one of the advantages peculiar to this section. Our reservoir capacity can be vastly increased at will just as fast as there is a demand for water. The large reservoirs are on Grand mesa and as yet are but slightly improved. The apple crop is now being rapidly gathered and sent to market. The pick so far has sold well being largr, fine colored and tree from worms. Every year is demonstrating anew that the Sur face creek country can not be beat en for fine fruit. Wm. Hart has sold three acres adjoining town to J. H. Simmons for 575. per acre without water. Mr. Simmons has already con structed a small residence and will reside on the place. Piarl Rogers, of Paonia, was here this week looking after the prospects for establishing a furni ture store here. We did not learn whether he had decided to locate | or not. Surface Creek Champion. A party composed of Dr. I. F. Burgin, A. B. Stone and Mr. Peterson, left yesterday for the vicinity of Rifle to try their luck shooting deer. C. B. Pickett, our hustling real estate man, reports that business in his line is looking better than he anticipated. He is constantly receiving inquiries in regard to this locality and a large number Elberta Events. Mrs. F. B. Short is doing the weighing for the Sugar Beet Co. at our switch this fall. I. D. McF'adden visited at the school house Sunday during Sun day school and church. C. A. Frederick and Prof. Watson held services in the school house again Sunday last Beet harvesting is now on and Elberta will ship some of the finest beets in the valley. There are now twenty-nine pupils enrolled at the Midway school house and still more to start. W. H. Martin has just finished thrashing his large crop of beans and expects to have about fifty sacks. Miss Myrtle Wade and brother F'rank attended the singing school here last Sunday night. All are welcome. Albert Vernon, who has been in Portland, Oregon, taking in the fair for the last month, returned home last week. Mr. Fred Schoneman has sold his saw mill machinery to Mr. Goodwin at Crawlord for six hundred dollars and will move the larger part ot his building close to the Coburn switch to use for a packing house. This is all the valley needs to make it a thickly settled country and when people get to investigat ing our resources we may rest assured that nine out of ten will locate. The fair at Hotchkiss last week was well attended and everything passed off in good shape until the last day when the rain made racing impossible. The exhibits were quite extensive and well ar ranged. As qsual Suiface Creek did herself proud in the matter of fruit. Pete Hass who has been em ployed at the livery barn of Mil ler & Doughty, cut his foot very badly with an axe Tuesday after noon. The injury is doing nicely. This form of accident seems to be quite fashionable in these parts this fall. On the occasion of his birth day Louis Gipe invited the follow ing to participate in a delicious dinner with him last Sunday: Misses Anna Perry and Mamie Johnson.
