A light hafl on Sunday night did some damage to the wheat in his section but most. of it was insured and was promptly and satisfactorily adjusted by the compa ny, 80 the farmeri sustained no loss. The grasshoppers ate up eight acres of beets for Frank Crowley. Others are also having more or less trouble with the hopper.but as the beets gen erally are getting pretty rank no ex tensive damage is anticipated from that source, . This was an action to re cover commission for the sale of land, | was tried before Justice Milford and Judgment rendered in favor of the plaintiff. The defendent appealed to the county court, and Judge Billings lea sustained the decision of the jus tice’s court. I still have some good clean oats at 90 cents per 100ths. G. S. THORNBERRY, The meeting of the Cantaloupe Growers’' association held Saturday was attended by nearly half the mem bers and a very interesting session was held. An amendment to the bylaws was adopted making the membership fee 81.50 for those coming into the as sociation after May Ist. The stand of cantaloupes, as reported by the growers present, Is something over 75 per cent. Here is a bit of valuable informa tion, If true: Throw a bit of alum the size of a marble into a bowl of water, and wet the hands and face and exposed parts lightly with it. Ball, assistant entomologist at the State Agriculturahbollege, was here Monda7 making an examination of the worms that are now infesting many beet fields. He says the alfalfa or cut worms which have been 50 num erous in the alfalfa fields during the past three or four weeks are an entire ly different specie of insect from the beet army worms which are now in vading the beet flelds, The former. Inatead of leaving the alfalfa for the beets and other crops as many suppose, are going into the ground. The worm that i 8 now working on the beets is the regular beet army worm, Mr. Ball says, and i 8 exactly similar to those that gave the beet growers at Grand Junction 80 much trouble last year. He does not anticipate any serious re sults, however, from this brood, but warns farmers to be on the watch for the second brood which will no doubt appear from the Ist to the 15th o August. Every grower should pro vide himself with a sprayer and the necessary poisons 0 he may be able to act promptly as soon as the pests ap. pear, as a few days delay may proye disastrous t« the crop. —————e To the Bird Ciub. Members of the Bird club, organiz ed on Arbor day, may now obtain their numbers and enrolling sheets by callling at Ikelman Bros.’ drug store. The members may be enrolled by con sulting the president, Earl Bryce, or the secretary, Miss Bessie Garritson. Two prizes are offered as explained in the enrolling sheets. All reports are to be the property of the state super intendent and may be printed in the State Report. No member should fail to secure an enrolling sheet before July 4, and each one should prepare a full report to hand in September 7th. Each member should give his num ber to the president or secretary as soon as possible. Each one should keep an aecount of every nest found, no matter where found, and no matter how many oth ers have found it before. EXCURSIONS EAST AND WEST.
