Cowboys took possession of Gra nada a few nights ago. Wayland, the “one boss’* printer at Pueblo, has taken in a partner. Washington Harriet*, governor of California, died t Oakland Monday. Cheyenne Wells gives it out that their excursion this week was a suo- j cess. Ex-Goyeruor L P. 15!ackbum. of Kentucky, died at Frankfort Wed nesday, Trinidad makes the tramps that strike that town work on the streets. Just right. Springfield is to have two papers | and a Kansas man threaleun to put in the third one. f Chiviugton is a new town 4* id out an-the otvh Chiving ti-ui b.mt- twenty-five miles north of Lamar on the Missonri Pacific road. The GranaiLa papers are engaged in giving eaeh other taffy. Lets’ wait a while and see what they have to say of each other, such brotherly love can hardly hold out. Vol. one No. one of the Carriso Current by W. C. Powell has reach ed us. If lie gets out as good a pa per all the time as the first numer the people of Carriso scould give him a good support. A train on the Midland load car rying nearly three hundred laborers was ditched Wednesday west of Le&dville. Four men were killed and sixty- two were injured. The in jured were taken to Leadville and Colorado Springs. Denver no doubt is a nice place to live hut a bad place to die. They Beem to have an uocontrolable desire to cut open everybody that dies in that city to 6ee if they have not been poisoned. They can’t always tell, but they want the opportunity of making a gness anyhow. r Springfield and Vilas are having a nasty exchange of words over the location of the Pock Island road. Doth claim it strikes their town and each claim it does not strike the oth er. If you will adopt Lamar's plan not to boast of a thing until you get it you will be better off in the long vj'un. Whether it is to check the tide of emmigration west or uot we cannot say, but the papers of the middle states are teeming with tho advan tages of their own localities, and trying to prove that the people of the eastern and middle states are bet ter off where they are than they can ever hope to be by coming west. In some cases they speak the truth, but where a man*d«-pends on his day labor for a living or on routing land to farm and many other similar oc cupations the advantages of a new country will uot admit of a compari son. In the west cyery able bodied man who desires can have a farm or a home in his opportunities to make money and secure an inde pendence are many. It is a noticable fact that western people are a free, independent, well to do class. While they are generous, courteous people they have an air of self reliance and apparently ask no odds of anybody. This feeling is not caused simply by being a resident of the west but bv their surroundings and the opportu nities afforded. If they cannot do one thing they can do another and do not have to beg the chance. The i chance is always open to a man de siring it. This is the reason western people are satisfied with the west*! the reason why a poor man or one of j moderate means who has lived in the west is ne>er satisfied to live in the east again. We think if a man owns a farm in the east, has itweil stocked is free of debt and has good health 1 it is just as well for him to stay there, but the west is the placo for j the poor man who has an ambition [or a home of his own. Republican County Convention. The republicans of Bent countv are hereby notified that the county i convention will meet at Las Animas j at 10 a. m. The badness ot the convention will be to nominate county officers ! and to appoint a central committee. ! Mr. Henry Kellogg, republican candidate for county treasurer, lias beeu ftrmmg in Bent county for over ten years. He lives twenty eight miles south of Lamar and is still engaged in mixed farming, rais ing grain and feeding cattle, which pays much better than either depend ing on fanning or raising stock alone. Mixed farming pays in any country*. A great amount of money has been sent out of the county for hay the past summer and this fall that could just as well been kept at home as • not. There is an abundance of hay in Bent county this year and all that ; was necessary to supply the market was for some one to cut it. Besides keeping the money at home the cut ting, hauling and baling would have furnished employment to a number of men who may be looking for work before next spring. We hope by another year it w ill be unneces sary to ship in a pound of hay to Bent county. Sold by Descent Dugan in the last ten days, —Lots 3 and 4 Lamar, to*J. S.
