The republican county convention to nominate a ticket for county ofii coip, met at Las Aminas Wednesday, and was called to order by Ur. Phil lips Chairman of the county central committee. On motion ot the Lamar delegation J. F. willetts, of Lamar. m as chosen temporary Chairman, and Fra ml Grable, of Las Animas, Secre tary, c« taking his chair Mr. wiiletts made on of his characteristic sp© ich. es on the duties of the republican party. After the u*ual committees were appoiute<l a recess was taken un til after dinner when the committee oa permanent organization reported the temporary officers for tiie officers of • the convention, adopted. The convention was made up of seventy-one representative men of the county, the mrjority being men who haye been in the county only a year and having no personal interset further than to place in nomination a ticket of good competent men and to ad vance the interest of the republican party. The convention is pro nounced by all the gentlemen we have met who were in attendance to have been the most hurmoneous they had ever witnessed. There was a good deal earnest work done on be half of the different candidates, but no bitterness of lecling followed de feat in any case. Lamar sent a strong delegation to the convention whose influence and political tact was recognized early in the day, and we must say that each and every del egate is worthy of compliment for the able manner in which he repre sented this precinct. The ticket placed in nomination will be found at the head of our columns and is pronounced by ull irrespective of party to be a good one made up of men in every way competent to fill the respective positions for which they have been chosen, and one that every republican in the county can vote feeling that ho cast a first class ticket. An Atchison, Kansas, California excursion went west yesterday morn ing. Thomas Shean, a California ex cursionist, was run over and killed by the cars at La Junta last Satur day. Kansas has let go all holt on whis key aud is getting up a boom on su gar. Colorado takes a little of both in hers. We congratulate Judge l). M. Frost editor of the Dodge City Globe Live Stock Journal on the arrival the second inst., at his hou.-e of a daughter. This makes two heavy and five light Frost in the family. The next Excursion to Las Vegas passes through Lamar the morning of the 20th, aud those desirous of seeing that country will have no bet ter opportunity than to go on the next excurtion. Why the congregation of a St. J.ouis church should rise last Sunday when President and Mrs. Cleveland walked in, is something we can not understand. If the congregation had at that time knelt down to pray a ray of light a mere suggestion would have some chance to enter our befoged brain. T. t».
