There is great interest thoughout the west just now in the Alaska-Yukon- Pacific Exposition, which will open at Seattle on the first of June. In order to increase its circulatisn and to also adver tise the big Western fair, the Evening Telegraph of Colorado Springs has adop i ted the plan of having its readers vote on the question of whom to send on this fine vacation tour. A representative of the Telegraph was here Wednesday explaiuing the propcsi j tion to several of our young ladies, and at least one of them. Miss Grace Haight, will enter the race, which is open to every boy or girl, man or woman of good ! standing in this vicinity. Everybody has ! aa equal chance to earn this fine trip and those who are willing to exchange a little of their spare time for a nice summer vacation would do well to wnte at once to the Contest Editor of the Telegraph for particulars. It is understood that extraordinary ef forts are being made by the Telegraph to increase its subscription lists, and as it is a bright newsy paper the effort will no doubt be successful. The persons in each district receiving the largest number of points or votes in the Telegraph's contest will be taken in a Pullman car to Seattle, via Salt Lake and Portland. Club News The Woman’s Club met in regular ses sion in the new club room with a goodly number in attendance. The usual business of the club was transacted and the following ladies were elected to membership in the club, Mes dames Elser. Lawyer. Otto. Ritchie, Stratton and Evans, and Misses Gallag her and Latson. Mrs. Hall was taken in as a complimentary member. Mrs. G. M. Hall and Mrs. Harry Braden were taken in at the meeting previous. The program ( was carried out in full. Mrs. Poston j gave an interesting paper cn * The Reign | of Terror,” while Mrs. Johnson gave a complete "Biography of Napoleon." Mrs. Coffman gave the reading, "The French Armv retreating from Moscow." Mrs. Monkman gave “Life in the Tuilleries” (a short sketch of Empress Josephine and Marie Louise* and Miss Myrtle Wood gave the reading "Waterloo." Mrs, Mayo then had her innings in drilling the mem bers In Parliamentary Study, "The Duties of Committees,” which was cer tainly a great benefit to every one pre sent. This (Friday) evening is "Gentleman’s night," when the ladies will entertain their husbands. Wednesday was “Longfellow Day" with the Banner Club and each member responded to roll call with a quotation from his poems. A short biography of the poet was read by Mrs. Woodtide. Mrs. Johnson gave the reading. “The Wreck of the Hesperus." Mrs. Wheelock sang “The Bridge.” Mrs. Maddock re cited "The Children’s Hour” and Mrs. Blickenstaff "In Schooldays." Afte r which refreshments and conundrums were served by the hostess, Mr*. Wood side. The ladies did full justice to the refreshments and fairly well with the riddles as they had some kind of an an swer for eacrf. The P. E. O. was very pleasantly en tertained last Monday evening by their vice-president, Mrs. C. H. Badger, after the usual course of business, a social hour was spent and all departed voting Mrs. Badger a royal entertainer. The next meeting will be held Feb. 16, with Miss Edith Cook. Seed Companies Change Hands If the movement is any criterion the seed business must be a very desirable holding in the Arkansas Valley. That there is a good demand for an established seed business is proven by the changes that have lately taken place. Beall & Vanßuskirk, proprietors of the Ebbert Seed Co., early in the week dis posed of the business, stock, and all ap purtenances pertaining thereto to A. W. Creagor of Lamar, who is moving in to day and will assume active charge next week. The new proprietor is said to be a seedsman of long experience. As is told in his announcement in this issue, H. D. Garwood this week purchas ed the Gobin-Ebbert Seed Co. office fix tures. supplies and business, recently bought under foreclosure sale by W. B. Mandeville. Mr. Garwood will be unable to manage the business personally for a time, as he leaves next week for Texas to look after the produce business of H. CARRIE JOHN Funeral services over Mrs. Frank John were conducted at the stricken home on Friday evening by Rev. Otto, preparatory to the departure of the bereaved husband fer the old home in Leon. lowa, for into r ment of the remains in the family burying ground. Deceased was 37 years of age and left no relatives but her husband in Rocky Ford. The six-weeks-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Robertson, of North Second street, passed away last Thursday. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Otto on Saturday morning. The five-days-o!d daughter of Mr. and Mrs, J. J. Kemper died on Wednesday.
