Danny French, son of Dr.
French, after an absence of sever

week to visit relatives and friends,
lie has grown to be a tall man and
was not recognized by any of the
old settlers who knew him when
he was a boy.
At 10 a. m. on Sunday last at
the home of the bride in Denver
Miss Nannie Knight was united
in matrimony to Mr. David Laird,
Rev. Thus. Uzzel performing the
ceremony. A sumptuous dinner
• was served at bigb 12.
Hon. E. C. Stimson, Demo
cratic candidate for District J udge,
- was iu town Tuesday calling on
, friends. Mr. Stimson is pretty
well acquainted in Eltart county,
having officiated at the last ses
sion of our District court, nnd is
held in high esteem.
• Pete Harper, Republican can
, didate for county treaburer, nnd
oue of the best k'jtown and most
popular men in the county, was
1 in town Friday with his wife vis
iting friends. Pete is one of the
most solid men in the county and

t liains’ cheese factory, in Douglas
I county, was totally destroyed by
1 fire Sunday afternoon about 2
> o’clock, including all the furni
ture. The origin of the fire is a
mystery.
The Republican County Con
vention held in Elizabeth last
Thursday was one of the most
largely attended and enthusiastic
conventions ever convened in the
county. N. L. Gleason presided
as permanent chairman and C. F.
, Lindsley as secretary. In all its
, deliberations the conrentjon was
i very harmonious and enthusiastic.
A strong ticket was nominated,
which api>e2irs at the bead of this
paper.
School began last Monday in the
new frame school bouse just com
pleted in the Whitiug neighbor
hood, 8 miles north-west of El
tart. The enterprising residents
of the district have just furnished
the building with bundsome patent
seats, teacher’s desk, teacher’s
chair, slate blackboards and a fine
now stove. Miss Anna Brock
man is teacher and a six mouths*
term will be taught. Thirty
scholars reside in the district. An
advance step is taken by supply
ing books to all scholars in tiie
district free of charge.
Hair Cutting In Slnm.
Tbe wives of Siamese noblemen cut
their hair so that it sticks straight up ;
from their heads. The average length
of it is about oae and uue-half Inches.
During tbe winter of 1897 Mr.
Janies Heed, one of '.lie leading citi
zens and merchants of Clay, Clay
Co., W. Va., struck his leg against a
cake of ice in such a manner as to
bruise it severely. It became: very
raucb swollen and pained him so
! badly that he could not walk with
out the aid of crutches, lie was
treated by physicians, also used sev
, era I kinds of liniment and two and
a half gallons of wiskey in bathing it,
but nothing gave an}- relief until he
began using Chamberlain's Pain
Baltn. This brought almost a com
plete cure in a week’s time and he
believes that had he not used tbia
remedy his leg would have bail to
