The ELBERT COUNTY TRIBUNE Established in 18&4 Published every Friday Official Paper of Elbert County ALBERT NEUMAN Editor and Owner. SUBSCRIPTION RATES One Year 1.50 Six Months .75 Three Months .50 The Tribune stands for a greater Uncle Sam; a greater Colorado more prosperous Elbert County, and the best interest of Elbert first, last and all the time. Entered at Elbert Post office as matter of the second Class Denver Colorado., July 18 With the assurance of two important j calls last week the political pot has commenced to boil in earnest. ' State Chaiiman Ward returned from Arizona Friday and immt - , diately issued the call fr r the Dirr.ccratic state convention to meet i in the Denver Ai.bitciii.iri m Wednesday September, 14, It was i originally intendeel that the convention should be held September 7, . the earliest possible date rider lie livv, lit it was learnei j; later that the Auditorium could not be secured for that date. N< j. other hall was available large enough to accommodate 1100 people, I, hence the change- i ° Simultaneous w.ith the convention call came the proclamatior j of Governor Shafroth summoning the legislature to meet in extra ordinary session on Tuesday August, 9. The call provides for con I sideration of the initiative and referendum, headless ballot, prim- ! ary bill, bank guaranty, public service commission and railwaj < commission. Accompanying the proclamation was a message to thr legislature and the public, in wnich the gove’fior stated his reason for calling an extra session and asked support from the people in | having the proposed maesures enacted. i - o Secretary of State Fcarce is indtavorirg to have the board ol , capitol managers abolished, and naturally the Republican majority 1 is making an equally strenuous effort to hang on to the snap, which ; is a glaring relic of old time Denver machine politics. The board J was only intended to exist until the capitol building was built and j finished, and thousands of Hollars could be saved annually by now j doing away with this unnecessary and not at all ornimental ad- , junct o Washington. June ££- Hew (1 e Tayne-Aldrich law discriminates . in favor of the rich and against the poor, was told in a striking j manner on the floor of the htt.se of Representatives byWilliem i A, Cullop, of Indiana. On the sparkling diamond of the rich, said Mr Cullop, the Payne 1 Aldrich tariff law levies a normal duty of 10 percent, but on its imi tation, worn as ornaments by the poor it levies a duty of 20 percent. • On the champagne for the table of the fastidious-it levies a duty j of 66 percent., while on the clothing worn by the laboring man it j levies a duty of 86 per cent. On the fine silk costume of the society belle the tax is 60 per cent. while the woolen cr weested grab, worn by the heusemaid it is 135 percent. On the ordinary steel button fir the trousers of t'he toiler the ■ tariff is 127 per cent., while on the fine ivory button used on the clothing of a dude it is 67 per cent- On the plain course <!f the hvrr.ble the tariff is 165 per cent, while on the finest and Scestilest used by the exclusive it is 71 per cent. On the gloves worn by the laborer the tax is 66 percent, while on the finest gloves is is only 14 per cent. On the carpets used by the o\\ ners of fine palaces the tariff is 50 percent, while on theiheap ctipets used to adorn the modest homes of the workingmen it ts 127 per cent. Such inequalities are found in every feature of the new tariff law While Cullop spoke the Republicans listened silently and sullenly. No one appeared in themoed to ntem-pt him crchallegne him as to the accuracy of his statements. 0 Where the tariff hits us hardest, it has been increased; where the change is not material, it hr sbeen reduced,— Seator Bever idge, Republican. o • The extent of the official rotteness in Washington will never be known untill the democrats are again placed in power and get a half dozen investigation committees working. i o Rosevelt will not dare indorse Taft for these reasons. First: Taft Personally promised revision downward, and then per sonally signed a tarilf bill which revised the tariff upwards. Second: Taft personally aided Boss Aldrich to cheat the people out of an income tax, which would take some of the burden of taxation off of the poor and place it on the rich. Third: Taft personally used all the power at his command to pre vent the speaker Cannon from being dethroned. Fourth; Taft upheld Ballinger after the later had been exposed and discredited as having given aid to the Alaska coal land grabbers. Fifth: Taft counseled with Aldrich. Lodge, Hale, Guggenheim, Penrose Flint Cannon, Fordney and other representatives of the special interests, and refused to accept advice from such men as LaFallatte, Dolliver, Cummins, Clapp, and Murdock. Sixth: Taft is personally seeking to defeat LaFollette and other genuine insurgents because they indeavored to revise the tariff in conformity with the Taft pre-election speeches. o Tribune Want Ads Bring Results LEGAL NOTICES.
