Burnside £ HOBSON IMPEACHED “Under State-Wide Prohibition, Vilest Sort of Liquors Were Sold,” Says Gov. O’Neal of Alabama K 0* ■ ' ■' ' • c Ww ■ r . BY GOVERNOR O’NEAL OF ALABAMA “Alabama tried state-wide prohibition for two years. It increased crime and intemperance and made the liquor issue the burnipg question in every political contest. Men without char acter to whom licenses would not have been gnu.ted—the most criminal clement in the cities—dispensed the vilvsji sort of li quors, selling at all hours and to all ages without discrimination, and without restriction. Our larger cities wen* expci i ncing a reign of disorderly conduct previously unknown, and after two years of such experience, the voters of Alab.mia called a halt and the legislature was prevailed upon to give n-lief in the re enactment of a local option law.” ALABAMA’S PROHIBITION RECORD Adopted State wide Prohibition., 1007 Voters defeated effort to place prohibition in the Cqn stitution. By a plurality of 27,000 1909 Hobson’s own District voted against Constitutional Prohibition by a large majority. Under State-wide Prohibition, blind pigs, bootleggers and kitchen dives multiplied to such an alarming extent that the Legislature responded to public sen- '■ tiraent aud—- Repealed the State wide Act 1911 Alabama is now an Option State. Muskogee, Okla., June 8. —(Special.) —Oklahoma is running against many obstacles in 1 fs efforts to make j- ohl* bitlon prohibit In compliance w'ilh the state constitution. Enforcement offi cers are more or less Active, but the bootleggers are so much more so that they are able to serve refreshments before the officers overtake them. In the larger towns and cities pub lic sentiment seems to uphold a cer tain standnrd of law enforcement above or below which officers may not go. This standard does not permit a genuinely wide open traffic in liquor nor does it insist upon its absolute sup pression The greater the number of persons who may be interested In at least a temporary disregard of the law, the less likelihood is there of in terference by local officers. This may be observed chiring the holding of big conventions. COL. THEODORE ROOSEVELT SAYS. "The good citizen will demand lib erty for hlmrelf. ami as a matter of pride he will see to it that all others will receive the liberty which ho thus claims aa his own. Probably the best test of true love of liberty in any coun try Is the manner in which minorities are treated In that country. Not only should there 1 e complete liberty in matters of religion and opinion but corunlet* liberty fer each man to live his life at? he desires, provided only hat in so doing he does net wrong his neighbors. Wide difference of opin ion in matters of religious, political 1 and social be lief mUct exist if con cience or intellect alike are not to be stunted, if tin re is to be healthy growth Bitter Internecine hatreds, jnsed on such differences are signs, not of earnestness of belief, but of ' hat fanataclsm which, whether reli -1 giou* or anti-religious, democratic or is itself but a mani festation of tho gloomy bigotry which , has been the chief factor in the down ! fill of so many Mtions.” Vote no on the prohibition question. Given Freedom of Town. In one of the principal cities the minister who offered the prayer was i followed by an official of the local ! commercial club, who said .in sub stance: "The town is yours. Stop that Kidney trouDle NOW! The Kidneys when healthy, perform one of the most j important functions required from any organ of tne body. The elimination of waste products from the blood is a necessity and the greater portion of this work is done by the kidneys alone Do you realize just what this means when the kidneys be come so weakened that they cannot thro s' off the waste material? .
