REPUBLICANS SWEEP NATION IN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION &ETUKNB FROM VARIOUS STATES INDICATE GREATEST LANL SLIDE IN HISTORY FROM ALL OVER UNITED STATES. HARDING AND COOLIDGE ELECTED CLAIM MADE ON 358 ELECTORAL VOTES AS RETURNS SHOW SWEEPING VOTE. New York, Nov. 3. —New York state rolled up the staggering plurality of approximately 1,100,000 for Harding and Ooolldge. The city of New York, for years a Democratic hotbed, was oven more surprising. The city went for Tnft in 1808 by less than 10,000; it seems to have given Harding about 440,000 plurality. Harding carried every borough in the city and Just about every locality In the entire state. The sweep of the Republicans was un dreamed of. With actual returns far from com plete Harding was certain of 275 votes in the electoral college from the fol lowing states: Connecticut, Delaware. Idaho, Illinois, lowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan. Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon. Pennsylvania. Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming. The states from which the returns were too meager to Justify actually placiug them In either the Harding or Cox column were: Arizona, 3; Cali fornia. 13; Colorado, 0; Indiana, 15; Kentucky, 13; Maryland, 8; Minnesota, 12; Missouri, 18; Montana, 4; Nevada, 3; New Mexico, 3; North Dakota, 5; South Dakota* 3; Utah, 4: and West Virginia, 8. Total, 120. The states which are certain for Cox are Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Total. 136 votes in the electoral college. Chicago. Harding and Coolldge wore swept Into office in the presi dential election by the greatest land slide in political annals. With 25,000,000 or more Americans participating In the “groat and solemn” referendum on the League of Nations issue, decreed by President Wilson, the Democratic candidates, Cox nnd Roosevelt, champions of the Wilson league, were buried beneath an avalanche of unprecedented plural ities from coast to const The “silent vote," ou which the Democratic managers relied for the election of Cox, was cast overwhelm ingly for Harding. Governor Cox’s newspaper, The Day ton (Ohio) News, conceded the elec tion of Harding. Democratic Nationul Chairman White has conceded the de Arrest Bomb Plotter. Chicago.—ln the arrest of Charles Rrumsen, Russian chemist In Joliet, 111., department of justice officials here declared another of the most danger ous radicals In this country had been captured. Rrumsen was picked up by Sheriff James Newkirk of Joliet %hile kc was euguged In distributing hand bills of an Inflammatory nature. Ac oording to federal authorities, Bram sen’s chemical lore has been much In demand during the past three months by anarchistic organizations. 'feat of Cox ami the election of a Re publican Senate and House. Incomplete returns at the hour of going to press indicated that llnrdiug had won not less than 358 of the 531 votes in the electoral college, on which basis he would liuvc a majority of 185 over Cox. This breaks the record of the Republican landslide of IJK>4, which gave Theodore Roosevelt an electoral college majority of 159 over Parker. Illinois smashed all records In these parts by sending Harding over the line with something like 700,(XX) or 800,000 more votes than Cox. The Harding plurality in Chicago alone, whore the Democrats are stronger than in the state, Is in exdess of 300,000. On the basis of one-fourth of the returns, it looked ns if Cook county would give Harding a lead of 300,000 or more. Pennsylvania delivered a Republican plurality conservatively estimated nt 750,000. Returns from Massachusetts Indicated that the Bay state had in dorsed Harding to the tune of at least 300,000 plurality, while Governor Cool ldge estimated that it would not be less than 400,000 when the figures were complete. Massachusetts furnished the most impressive spectacle of Democratic de fection in the country. The Democratic party in that state, which is 90 per •cent Irish, was practically wiped out, the Irish element lining up with Hard ing because of hitter opposition to the League of Nations. "Ohio, the mothor of presidents," making a choice between her two favorite sons, bunded the palm to Harding, with the compliments of some 200,000 of his fellow citizens in excess of those who voted for Cox. New York. —With the possible ex ception of the contest for the gov ernorship, which still Is In doubt. Re publicans apparently have made a cleun sweep In New York state. Returns from 6,155 out of 7,308 dis tricts In New York state give: Cox, 695,435: Harding, 1.619,918, a plural ity of 924,488 for Harding. Returns from 5,586 districts out of 7.308 give Harding 1,498,934; Cox, 648,445. If this ratio is maintained »n the missing districts. Senator Harding will carry the state by the unprece dented plurality of 1,125,000 over Gov ernor Cox. Clash in Florida. San Francisco.—An apparently safe majority for Senator Harding the out come of the United States senatorial contest still doubtful and the anti alien land amendment seemingly adopted were Indicated in California returns compiled. For president, 1,687 precincts out of 16,154 in the state gave Senator Hord ing a lead of 128,671 votes over Gov ernor Cox. The vote was: Cox, 65,- 662; Harding, 168,733. Returns from only 929 precincts had been tabulated in the senatorial con test. These gave Samuel M. Short ridge, Republican, 58.225. Senator .laraeR J. l’helan, Democrat Incumbent. 47,267. Supporters of Senator Phelan as serted that his chance* for re-election were still excellent, as only seventeen of San Francisco's 771 precincts were included in the totul. San Francisco was regarded ns A Phelan stronghold. The California anti-alien land amend ment, which has been the snbject of diplomatic exchanges between the United States and Japan, had a load of slightly more than two and one half to one. The vote from 353 precincts was: For adoption, 19,225; against, 7,114. Shoup Re-Elected. On the face of returns early this morning, Colorado has returned a Re publican majority in virtually every one of the sixty-three counties of the state, which indicates that out of a probable vote of 305,000 the party will register a victory for the entire ticket by more than 30,000. Complete returns, Including seventy oight in Denver, gave: Harding, 59,- 780; Cox, 31,658; Nicholson, for United States senator, 52,393; Scott. 38,528; Thomas, 54211; governor, Shoup, 59,- 780; Collin*, 30,122. It appeared prob able that Governor Shoup would ruu ahead of the national ticket in the final returns for the whole state. Marion, Ohio. —Convinced by early returns of Ills election to the presi dency, Warren G. White, chair man of the Democratic National Com mittee, has conceded the election of Senator Harding. Mr. White also conceded the elec tion of a Republican Congress. The following statement was issued by Mr. White: “The abandonment by some of the most prominent Republican leaders of the very League of Nations which they helped to construct has been suc cessful. Tim people have succumbed to the confusion wrought by these distinguished men and to the misrepre sentation of those who would not and did not understand the League of Na tions. “I hope it may yet be rescued from the political morass and be saved to mankind. “No one has uuy occasion for bit terness or of recrimination. What the whole people decide, the whole peo ple must accept. At the same lime it became khowfl that the Senator and Mrs. Hording had made plans for a vacation trip, to be carried out regurdless of the result of the election, taking them for a rest next week in Texas. “Assuming that the early returns are wholly dependable, I do not hesi tate to say that I am pleased, of course I am happy to utter my grati tude.
