A long time Ago a mother wrote The Record a letter and asked us to write a story about the evils of gambling. She said her boy was gambling and that perhaps a word from us would help to save him. She said that be was breaking her heart—the boy she had nursed from a babe and in whom all her hopes and ambitions were cen tered. It was a sad story—that anonymous letter. It came so long ago that we have forgotten 'when and we never knew from whom. It was neglected by us—at least, delayed— but not for gotten. It was not acted upon at the time, for what could we write that woulf appeal to a boy who was deliberately throwing his life away and breaking his own mother's heart? What can we write now? That was so long ago that that par ticular boy has braced up and became a man. or he has gone to the devil for good. We can't do anything for that mother God knows we wish we could. Some sre wandering to and fro over the earth without hom« or friends Oh. tho tragedies that could be writ ten of the young men who have known happy Canon City homes! The news columns have told little of these. The Record has dealt gently with erring youth. For The Record would not knowingly place a single barrier in the path of a boy to add a single ache to s fond mother's heart. Out in thinking of this letter from a hr **n-h carted mother we hav*» thought of many a boy who has dropped out—who has failed— who h is died too Boon—who has gone to the bad—who has been lost.
