It is not hard to find an explanation for these be liefs if you attend the little play which" Miss Edna Wallace Hopper is using to star this season. It is a thesis on the brighter side of life, and the incident that happened in a very small town the other night is also an argument in favor of the influence ot the spoken drama over the written word. Phoebe Larrimore. the optimistic little widow, which Edna Wallace Hopper plays, had spoken for the best in the fnce of adverse circumstances for a most an entire act. Not a cus tomer had come to her little store, just around the corner, so in a most 1 cheerful spnrit she sends her lone as sistant out to bring in a customer, { with a humorous injunction that if he ( got someone to “buy that red necktie. ’’ s it would be the end of a perfect day. J The audience laughed, but there was • one among them who took it seriously, as transpired. The assistant came 1 back without his customer and it looked as if the act was going to close without a sale, when a man in the audience got up and 3poke. He was a farmer back in the hills of Califor nia. “I’ll take that red tie,” he said with out any prefatory remarks. He was | so tall and broad he had undoubtedly been seen by everybody while sitting ( down .and with his long farmer's ‘ beard the listeners thought he was ( made up for the part, they were so still. it all happened quietly and sud denly. In a moment his great legs had straddled the small orchestra pit ; and the giant was on the stage. He towered over the littel star like a Rocky Mountain. Miss Hopper thought the best way to let the play proceed was to sell him the tie. She handed it to him and asked lor 75 cents. He paid it in a business-like fashion, and then smiled down at her benevolently and comprehendingly. He said: ‘‘Now I’m going to sit out there and see if you don’t get that perfect day,” He complacently resumed his seat and the play continued smoothly. When the play ended happily, he was heard to remark in the lobby of the theater: *‘l knew I would bring that little woman good luck.” Edna Wallace Hopper comes to the I City Auditorium. Pueblo, Christmas night. Tickets on sale today at the Hausman drug store, Fourth and Main streets.
