Buck, Pastor of Congregational Church, Cortez, Colo. ——————— What is most needed at present in Montezuma county, it is claimed: by many who profess to know, is a flouring mill. There is a splen did opportunity for some one look ing for a good paying investment. We have but one mill in the coun ty, which is located at Cortez, the county seat, and this mill is doing a magnificent business. Wheat is raised in the valley, and also of a first-cliiss quality. A flodring mill located in or around Dolores could’ be run five months in the _year by cither water power or steam, as the Dolores river runs through this great agricultural valley, e e e With this, the fifst issue of the SILVER STAR, we call attention to the most liberal advertising patron age from, the, merchants and busi ness meg of, Dolares. ,It is certainly mo#t ericouraging in every sense. And this alfo goes to show that be ing liberal in their support for a paper, that there is bright prospect for the town of Dolores, with such business stien at the helm. We are here to stay, |g€ G e ~ Rev. E. Buck's subject for next iSunday evening, at the Congrega tional church, at Cortez will be *‘The Savior's Tears Over the Sin: ners’ Loss. Text, Luke; 19:44, 42.‘ gThe church has a new choir and a new string band, who has charge of the program of fine selections every 1 Sunday “evening: Hverybody if vited to these services, Christ says: !‘Those who will endure to the end will wear the efown of life.”” M. ‘A. The goverment bill to prolibit the importation 'of foreign prison made goods in England issaid to be. the shortest ever introduced in par liament. It consists of less than fifty words, and simply provides that goods proven to the satisfaction of commissioners of customs by evi dence tendered to them to have been 'made or produced, wholly or in part, in any foreign prison, jail, house of correction or penitentiary, shall be prohibited from admission to the country. The measure is the out come of an active agitation on the part of organized labor against the extensive importation of numerous articles made in the prisons of Ger many and other countries. Meeting of Democratic Clubs. President Black announces the conipletion of the executive com mittee of the national association of Democratic clubs 'at Washington. | ‘His statement shows that the menl chosen gave loyal support to Bryan and the Chicago platfom in the cam paign. A call for the commitee to meet in Washington on April 12has been issued. Mr. Bryan will attend. Struck It at Red River. ‘ Through all last winter's slorm Jack Benn worked on a high mountain spur of Black mountain about which cluster the Estella, Jay Hawk and Golden Treas ure mine on Red river about three fourths of a mile.from the smelter in pioneer gulch. His . . cqn-~veadue his boén rewarded. For loverm“dlyl past he has been encountering a mineralized streak, while running a tunnel. Lust week he encountered a genuine tellurium streak which will assay over SIO,OOO per ton. The pay streak is about two and one half inches wide. and the town is wild over the strike, which is genuine in every particular. The property is being nego tiated for now, and will probably be tied up at once, as Mr. Benn has many other equally promising properties, and desires to realize. Some Las Vegas people are interested with him, There is a growing sentiment all over the country that any man who refuses to pay his debts is not fit to be employed in any public capacity, and the rule ought tobe enforced. Where such arule, will work a hardship once it will dtop the ca. | reerof the dead beat twenty times. People who honestly intend to try and pay their debts will have no difficulty in establish ing that fact. Those whose lives are given up to beating their way should be spotted and the honest mun given the preferenc every time, Loth in public and private life.—Del Norte Prospector. Dolores is at present very badly in need of a new depot amd ftore room. Dolores certainly is desery ing of this addition, as the freight and passenger traffic demands it. Besides a depot with waiting rooms would be of great convenience to passengers awaiting the arrival of trains, Then again, it would add to the appearance of the town. The compuny hasa friost beautiful site reserved; The freight and passen ger discharge at Dolores is as large as that of other towns along the line which have all those conven iences; Jet us hope. P et @ e The Beautiful is fast disappearing and the farmers of Montezuma val ley are hurriedly making prepara tion for the spring work. Roads are faft becoming better with the prevailing beautiful weather: R The engine of the regular notthbound train became derailed between Dolores 'and Mancos which caused a déisy ot tour or tive hours on Wednesday evening. The editor had the pleasure of ;'being present at the Union Literary Imeeting last Saturday evening and was certainly highly pleased. Re iyprt of the previous meeting was read and approved, and the society :thcn proceeded to business in good style. Program for the evening fol lowed, Reading, recitations, his torical exercises and speeches were iindulged in. All participants proved themselves above the standard in everything they had undertaken on | this occasion. Among them were E. B. Garlinghouse, Benjamin Suth erland, L. A. Westlake and Cham pion Montgomery. The last named gentleman is an eccentric comedian and he creates laughter every time he opens his mouth., He speaks fluently and carelessly and makes an argument that is very interest ing. _E. B. Garlinghouse deserves special mention, as he is very cool and collected in every sentence he ‘utters, Mr. Sutherland needs no praise, as every one who knows him can come to a determination as to how he carried himself. Mr. Westlake, editor of the society pa per, read before the literary, was a creditable edition, and he also de serves great credit. All other par ticipants deserve like praise, but space in this issue will not permit a detailed account. The literary closed with a ‘‘mock trtat; ~ winich was- usuctc better and more laughable than a farce come dy. The members of the society acquitted themselves credibly.
