To the Editor of The Tribune— Dear Sir—l notice in your issue of February 27th a short article concern ing the Florence Free Library in which you state that any plan that tends to extend the usefullness of the . | library is cordially sapported by the "loftizens of Florence. You also state that is is to be regretted that the lib rary is not more centraliy located and is not open continuously. The first statement, my dear sir, is untrue. The people of Florence do not cordially support the Public uib {¢ary. The Kirmess was not patron | {zed simply for the benefit of the | Ltbrary, but because it was a means '|of ontertainment and a obance to | criticise some of our townspeople if they falled to make good. i As witness, the fact that we are : supporting three pioture shows, whllel |our Pablic Library i 8 receiving the L magnificent snm of $6.25 In monthly sbucsriptions and from the sale of : library cards the further additional immonse snm of $4.50, making a to tal support of §10.756 per month from our ilberal ocitizens. Of course, you may say that they patronize shows, bazars and soforth when given for the Library, but that is for the sake of the entertainment, as per our picture Bbhows mentioned above. l The merchants you say are com menting favorably upon the efforts made by the Library board to supply the need of rest room. Comments, my dear sir,do not cost anything, but | how many of these same merchunts put their hand in their pockets each |, month and draw forth ome of our|, good American dollars to help to sup- | ply the need of a rest room and Lib- |, rary? Divide the $6.25 by $1 per merchant and yon have six and one fourth merchants, and 1 think you : will very likely find one or more ' of these six are not merchants. Who ‘ !zhe one-fourth merchant s, it ‘mlghc be hard to find out. ] The statement that it is to be re- 1 gretted that the Library =is not ’ more centrallz looah\d ramisnd- "1 - wwsy 1 read in the paper: some time ago of an accident that happen- , ed to an old gentleman who was I peddling and carried his stook in : trade in a basket. He was run into ; on the street by a wagon, knocked ! down, hart, and his stock almost de- : stroyed The people gathered around ’ and one among them expressed him- £ self as being extremely sorry for the I old man. When a Quaker standivg by ! turned to him and said, ‘‘How much is thee sorry, my friend, 1 am sorry |( $5.00. How much is thee sorry?’’ C The papers are supposed to exprass || public opinion; then in the words of |t the Quaker, how much does the pub- | lic regret that the Library is not in|( s more central location ? ) 1 myself, regret it to the amount of |8 SSO per year. 1f any other nineteen |& oitizens of the oity of Florence feels |¢ $5 worsh of cordiality per year to-|Y wards the public Library, it can soon |3 be in a central location. Now if the |t merchants of Florence think so fav-|# orably of the efforts of the small band | € of men and women that has struggled | 80 long and under such discouraging | conditions to furnish the children |¢ and adults of Florence and the visft. |1 ors thereto, with a place where there ‘ls a thousand per oent more enter tainment than can be gotten out of |/ eithera Kirmess, a bazar or a plec ture show, let them come forward and if they oan not pledge nand pay SSO let them generously give as near that l amount a8 they can. 1f this harts anybody's feelings 1 will be glad of it, because some-|! body needs to be hurt.
