DAILY GAZETTE FRIDAY, JÜLY 1, 1881. D tllTTE GLEAXINUft. Business is picking up. Las Vegas will have gas next work. The Hon Ton .Saloon is fitting up a iM-ttt dub room. J. W. Iove is now receiving large amount) of fresh hay. Charlie Dyer will move into his new residence next Monday or Tuesday. The shower was a God send, or any thing tho revised edition will sanction. Marwede, Hrumley & Co.'s new ' building is rapidly approaching com pletion. The Park Meat Shop will be the new one which F. Gordon will start on the plaza just above the Pacific House. The Trinidad Knightsof Pythias have written to this city to secure the servi ces of our brass band for the Fourth. Mr. Bolton proposes to open up a first class restaurant in Dold's black. He will serve dinner first on the 4th of July. The Central Bank of Albuquerque yesterday removed from the. old town to New Albuquerque. That institution is in a most flourishing condition. The rain storm yesterday afternoon was good but brief. It was likely the prelude to a coming deluge. The weather is hot enough to warrant it. We were shown a bill of sale by Chas. Ilfeld for 400 head of cattle bought by him from Mr. S. Brazil of Fort Sumner. Mr. I. will continue to hold them on the old range. A large number of sheep have been purchased by new comers who intend to engage in the ranch business. There is evidently a correct belief that ranch ing pays. It is reported that Paddy Ryan who shot Charles Walker, the Deputy U. S. Marshal at San Marcial a few days ago was put off the train at Ortiz station night before last. Dysentery among the children seems to be contagious and is ascribed by physicians to unhealthy drinking wa ter. The water works would be an ac ceptable convenience this hot weather. The inhabitants of Greeley, Colorado, have formed a mutual protective asso ciation against hail storms. Hail ap pears to be as destructive to crops along the base of the 'mountains as chintz bugs are in the States. "Six-Shooter" Smith, who under took to run a rival town to that of the A. T. & S. F. R. H. at Deming, and who was boss of the squatter town on the Texas & Pacific R. R.'s grant, is among the late distinguished arrivals. The Trinidad Timex says that if a sufficient number of parties will come Trainmaster Saunders, of Raton, will run a special train from Las Vegas to Trinidad to bring parties who wish to attend the Fourth of July celebration here.. It is probable that the Knights of Pythias of this city will not accept the invitation of the Trinidad lodge to cele brate the Fourth in that city. The Las vegas lodges of Odd Fellows and Knights each have committees ap pointed to confer as to whether or not the members of those orders shall pa rade on that day. If the Odd Fellows decide to parade the Knights will join them. J. S. Morgan is in the city and has a desk scheme on foot which is worthy the attention of hotel men. He will put up jm elegant desk in a hotel free of cost provided he will bo allowed to use the front above the desk for business cards. Tho whole will be neatly fin ished and prove an ornamental and useful piece of furniture. Messrs. Mor gan and Jcffers will visit our hotel and business men to-day and discuss the subject. Dr. Ed. Morly came up from the Gallinas Mining district yesterday bringing with him some of the finest copper ores that we have seen m the city. The rock has every appearance of that from the Mogollons, and it is not unlikely that when shafts are down as deep as ' they are in the vicinity of Clairmont as big assays may be obtained. Two shifts are at work on the brag claim of the district, the "Deadwood," and it is expected that returns as high as fifty ounces in silver and forty per cent, cop per to the ton will be secured from the shaft, now down about twenty feet. Work is progressing on the "Pride" and "Red Cloud" claim. The increase in the value of wool makes the woolgrowers who held their wool, feel good. The depression was enly for a time and was caused by the heavy wool operator in the east, in or der to gather up the small clips in tho eastern and middle states. After those had been gathered up, tho manufac turers had to raise the price in order to induce the large wool growing countries of the went to disgorge. This state of affairs is liable to take place every spring, but not so liable to occur in the fall as shep in the Eastern States are not clipped in the fall. It would be well for our sheep men to study this question á little. It might save them much money. ANOTHER WBITK, Robert Willi, n Brakcnutn Inilmill Y ! Killed- HU Body llnrlni 1'nder lh Itebrlii Yesterday forenoon about 11 o'clock j as the freight train No. ion, Conductos i W. W. Finlej- was pulling through what ; is known as the Ortiz cut, a part of the j train was ditched. The place where j the accident occurred was about Iwoj miles and a half this side of Ortiz sta tion, and a broken wheel caused one j car to jump the track dragging fifteen others. The sixteen cars were heavih j loaded with coal, iron and ties and were badly smashed up, making a ter rible wreck that will require twenty hours to remove. The head hrakeman Robert Watts was found to be missing and his body was discovered deep down under the debris. He must have been instantly killed and it was not till late in the af ternoon that in was recovered. Mr. Watts had been at work on the line on ly five days when he was killed, having made his first run on the 2"tli of June. He was formerly on the I., C. & S. L. Jl. R. and the boys who had become acquainted with him thought well of him. He has a brother residing in Chicago to whom the sad news was tel egraphed rs also to his father, who lives in Ohio. As soon as the news of the wreck was received here, Train Dispatcher Sharp telegraphed Road Master Bound at Wallace who immediately set out ith a wrecking train anfl a gang of work men, and they were at once set to work clearing up the wreck. A wrecking car was attached to tin Pacific express in this city yesterday noon and a lot of workmen went down. Charlie Dyer, Master of Transportation went down to the scene of the acci dent. ladian l'inclim. An Indian is a queer animal. Even the alleged civilized reds are full of meanness, and it is bound to crop out. The Pueblos, down the Rio (irande valley, who are supposed to be quite re spectable, have recently exhibited symptoms of sheer cussedness. On sev eral occasions Chief Train Dispatcher Sharp has found it impossible to work the wires beyond a point just below Sandia Station, south of Wallace. Com munication has thus been interrupted several times during the past two weeks, and no cause could be assigned. Finally one of the line fixers discovered that some of the Pueblo Indians have found it a source of amusement to climb the poles and admire the coun try. By way of diversion they have chosen to take up with them old wire used in baling hay, and have tested their ingenuity in tying up the wires, bunching them together and entwining the wire around them. Thus a ground connection is made, and this sport of the noble red men occasions not a little inconvenience and is provocative of many cuss words from the operators. We should be found thoroughly in sym pathy with Train Dispatcher Sharp did he "send a loving message1' to the meddlesome reds in the shape of an electric shock, else break their ground connection. James Small, cheif clerk of the rail way mail service in New Mexico, went down yesterday to attend to mail mat ters on the El Paso branch, Beginning with to-day the railway service will be put on from Rincón Juntion to El Paso. This will be good news to the people of Las Cruces and the Mesilla valley. Heretofore all mails have gone via Deming and from there over the South ern Pacific R. R. to Afton, from which point they have been taken by the mail carrier on horseback or by buckboard. By the old arrangement mails wen? very irregular, but now good service will be rendered on the branch as well as along the entire length of the A. T. & S. F. system in the Territory. Mr. Small is doing a good work in attend ing to matters on his division, and is deserving of great thanks for the faith ful watch that he keeps over Ihe mails. The Mnritn Unll. The opening ball of the Hotel Maden in Albuquerque on Wednesday evening was a big social event and a grand suc cess. Nothing was left undone by the Maden Bros,, the proprietors, and Mr, H. S. Buntin, the manager, who is kind ly remembered by many people in this city, to make it an event long to be re membered. The Albuquerque people turned out in good style, the Atlantic & Pacific railroad boys were out in full force, and there were a number of peo ple from other cities, several going down from Las Vegas. Between two and three hundred people were in at tendance including many ladies. A good string band furnished the music and dancing was kept up till an early hour. An excellent champagne sup per was furnished. The Maden opens most auspiciously and has a large pat ronage. Capt. J. J. Fitzgerrell, the live real estate man has just issued 10,000 circu lars which will be distributed ail over the States in the interest of his busi ness particularly and the town and Ter ritory generally. It describes in brief the advantages of the large amount of lands, ranches and town lots in his hands for sale, and the business oppor sunities awaiting investment?. PERSONAL.
