L 3 SASETTE LEAXIHC. Be careful where you throw fire crackers. The County Commissioners will meet in regular session next Monday. Travel is on the increase, as is indiea t'd ly the mimbar oí hotel arrivals. People are casting about lively now for something to do and somewhere to go to-morrow. A i umber of people will spend the Fourth in the suburbs in the qujet lit tle burg of Santa Fe in particular. The wife, two children and mother of Wm. P. Campbell of the (íazettk force arrived on yesterday's train from Fair field, Iowa. If you want a good square meal go to the St, Nicholas Hotel. Another of those excellent Sunday dinners will be given to-day. Evidently there was something wrong with the eastern mail yesterday, both the paper and letter mails being re markably light. It is reported that the body of the missing butcher, John Berger has been found down the Pecos river, twenty five miles south of Ft. Sumner. It was very much decomposed. We call attention to the new furni ture advertisement of Robert Torey & Co. They have a well selected stock of furniture, queensware, bar fixtures, etc. They also make a specialty of under taking. W. Codman and E. W. Sebbcns left on yesterday's train for the Pecas, where they will spend several days hunting and fishing. They were well supplied with fishing tackle, guns and provisions. Andrew Drake, the coutractor and builder, will leave for Deming to-morrow. He goes prepared to do all kinds of contracting and jobbing. He will take contracts with everything furnish ed or will furnish all the materials needed. Too much precaution cannot be pre served by those who celebrate the Fourth with fireworks, to guard against a conflagration. The reckless throwing of tire crackers, on the roofs of build ings and sidewalks, is likely to kindle a blaze not easily extinguished. Mr. J. G. Stocks, the popular cigar man of the east side, has just received a letter from his family in Oakland, stating that his wife is very sick. He will sell out to the first man that comes along. This is a good chance for some one who ucsires to go into a paying business. The Gazette is justly proud of its enterprise in giving the people of Las Vegas and the passengers on the Atlan tic and Pacific expresses, particulars of the attempted assassination of Presi dent Garfield. Two extras were pub lished, one at 9 a. ra. and another, with full particulars, at 4 p. m. that were distributed free. Owing to the Ortiz wreck, there went two regular A. T. & S. F. trains de tained in the southern country. One reached this city yesterday afternoon, three hours late owing to delay from a hot journal down the valley. It was mixed train, carrying a part of the de layeü Irish mail. Another train carry ing no passengers, but taking the mail and the express matter arrived late in the evening. Dr. S. B. Merkel and wife arrived from Idaho Springs, Colorado, Friday and are stopping at the St. Nicholas Hotel. They have come to make Las Vegas their home and the Doctor will devote his entire attention to the up building 6f the Hot Springs as a resort for tourists and a sanitarium for inva lids. He has had a great deal of expe rience in this direction, having visited all the principal bathing places iu Eu rope and materially aided in the growth and advancement of the Hot Springs of Arkansas and Idaho Springs, Colorado. He intends to make an analysis of the water and also have it thoroughly test ed by some of the best professors of the east. The railroad company will also be interested in the matter and the ex tensive acquaintance of Dr. Merkel will go a long way in turning the tide of tourists in this direction. FUlilnff Parly. Yesterday's south bound train bore with it Harry Kelley, Ned Gross, John W. Nowers and P. L. Cooley, who pro pose to spend several days on a fishing and hunting excursion. The boys were well heeled with fishing tackle, guns and provisions, to say nothing at' all about the bottled goods that were likely hid away among the rest of the traps. The field selected for operations is about twelve miles above the old town of Pecos. This part of the valley is very beautiful and abounds in many kind of tho larger game. The river is also full of trout. The Gazette wishes the boys a successful hunt and a pleas ant time. John J. Connor, of hemorrhage of the lungs, at 8 o'clock p. m., July 1st. Mr. Connor came to this city several years ago much reduced by consump tion and for a time revived and bid fair to get entirely well, but the fell destroy er had sapped his vitality and he finally fell a victim to its ravages. He was an excellent shoemaker, an honest and an upright man and was well liked by all who formed his acquaintance. He leaves a wife to mourn his loss. The remains were shipped east on yester day's express. FIRED. Furnaces of the (Jas Works Lighted up Yesterday. (tas to be Turned on in Several Days. Yesterday afternoon at 4:25 o'clock the fires in the furnaces of the Las Ve gas gas works were lighted. Mr. Adin H. Whitmore, Secretary of the Las Ve gas Gas and Coke company, touched the match to the kindling and the works were fairly set a-working. It will re quire three or four days to get up the furnaces to a white heat, and dry the retorts. After the fires had been light ed, Mr. D. H. Irland, contractor of the works, kindly conducted a representa tive of the Gazette about the premises, explaining the method of manufactur ing gas. The retort house and purifying rooms are contained in a substantially built brick building, arranged with all the conveniences for manufacturing gas It is 58 feet long, 30 feet wide and 15 feet high, surmounted by a corrugated iron roof, with ventilators, etc. In the retort house are two benches of retorts, three in number on each bench, each having a running capacity of 22,000 cu bic feet per day. From the retorts the gas passes to the hydraulic main, in which it is sep' arated from the tar. Froni the hy draulic main the gas passes to the con' denser where the condensation is taken out of the gas. Then it passes to the center seal, from which the gas is dis tributed to the purihers, tour in num ber. The purifiers are charged with lime screens, and the gas passes through all four, making it ready for use. From the purifiers it passes back to the seal, and from there out to the holder, and then is turned on into the mains. The reservoir for the holder is 42 ft. 3 in. in diameter, and water is supplied from a well in the retort house. This well is now four feet in diameter and thirteen feet deep. About eight feet of water is secured, but the well will be due stül deeper, lhc homer is 4a it. in diameter and fourteen feet deep. Mr. Irland informs us that the Trini dad coal, that will be used in our works is capable of making gas of from twen ty to twenty-two candle power, and his contract stipulates that the gas fur nished this city should be of at least sixteen candle power. It was expected that the furnaces would be lighted up earlier in the week but there was a delay of four days on account of the brick work. However, the works will be turned over to the company by Mr. Irland some time dur ing the coming week. THE CONTRACTOR. The Las Vegas works are the forty- fourth of the kind erected by Mr. Ir land in the United States, and each and all have stood the test of time and at test the cspability of our contractor to made a success of such an industry. He has given the works his personal atten sion and we have thus had the benefit of his years of experience and skill, that assures the success of the works He has had many things to contend with, from delayed freight to scarcity of bricks, and had it not been for these unavoidable hindrances Las Vegas would have been lighted by gas more than a month ago. The contract for building the works was awarded Mr. Irland on the 15th of December last. The conditions under which it was granted were that work should begin within sixty days, and that gas should be turned on by July 30th. Work was begun February 7th., and the mains were all laid before work was begun on the retort house, etc., owing to scarcity of brick. As will be remembered, Mr. Irland gave up his proposed site near the Gal linas between the East and West side at the request of a number of citizens He accepted the present site, just east of Lockhart & Co's planing mill, and across the railroad track, which is the best that could have been found. Al though not quite so convenient to the eompay it is in the best place, as re gards the city, and is in plain view of the railroad where it stands a nionu ment to our enterprise. Park Stent Market. air. ueorge iioruon lias established a new meat market on the plaza near the Pacific House. Mr. Gordon is an expe rienced butcher and has arranged ev erything nice and neat. He proposes to keep the market supplied with the best beef, mutton and pork that the country affords. We feel certain that Mr. Gordon will do well with his mar ket. hnreb Mcrvleea. He is now on his way to St. Louis where his two sons are being ed ucated at the Christian Brothers Col lege. They will visit Washington City and other cities of the East after which they will journey home, and will spend a short time with Don M. A. Otero in this city. Don A. Jaques resided in New Mexico in '43 or '44, when he at tended to some business for Don. M. A Utero s brothers, jnow alter so long a time he comes back to the Territory again, and expresses himself as very much pleased with the progress and remarkable development of this coun try. We are glad and proud to welcome to New Mexico citizens of our neighbor ing Republic, because it indicates a reciprocity of feeling, and we fetd flat tered to see such gentlemen come into the Territory to note our improvement. Gurfirld'a Aaaaaalnatlon. When the news of the attempted as sassination of President Garfield was made public yesterday morning through the medium of the Gazette's extra issued at 9 o'clock, there was a general stagnation of business. Wool men in particular looked upon it in the light of a canard sent out from the east by op erators in the hopes to bull the market. But as the first views was quickly con firmed by regular bulletins received at this office, incredulity gave place to in dignation. On all sides sympathy was expressed for our Chief Executive who was reported to be dying. Many were the patriotic, expressions uttered, by men whqooked upon the act as having a political significance, and expected that they would be called upon to act under arms. It is a mistaken idea of people of the east that the native popu lation of New Mexico is not patriotic, that they are not in sympathy with the loyal people of the Union. But could a a few of the New England people have listened to the little patriotic and forci ble speeches of natives on our streets yesterday, when they had read the Ga zette extra or had it translated, they would never again give credence to the fallacy. The firsf impression of the people was that behind the dastardly crime conspiracy lurked. The maniac and his shots were considered but the means to an end, contemplated and con nived by conspirators, the representa tives of a political faction. But after a while the Gazette's solution of the mystery came to be accepted generally, and subsequent advices confirmed our supposition that it was the freak of a madman, a disappointed office-seeker. But no explanation of this kind could diminish the unbounded sorrow of our people, no philosophy could reason us out of our despondency. It was a day of gloom, all the more marked because . of the nearness of the anniversary of the natal day of our Republic M. Heise yesterday received a car of Budweiser beer. ' Whalraal Llqaara. M.
