1 DAIÍ.Y GAZETTE SUNDAY. AUGUST 7, 1881. Tie street cars did a rushing business last night. District Court convenes in this city to morrow. Several parties arc on deck for the near future. El Paso will be one of the finest grape market in the west this fall. Mendenhall & Co.'s hack line to the Hot SpringH starts off with a good pa tronage. Holme' 8 ice wagon now ruakosjts ap pearance at the depot at train time these dayH. The wreck on the Santa Fe branch has been cleared up, and trains are run ning regularly again. Yesterday afternoon a heavy shower struck Glorieta hill, and it rained very hard at Kingman and Glorieta. J.J. Fitzgerrell, the live real estate man, advertises to pay the highest cash price for f 10,000 in county warrants. A fine front is to be put on Shupp's new building, which is being cut oft' for the purpose of widening Bridge street. Mr. Rocco Emillco has started a new fruit atore on the plaza in the building formerly occupied by Baca's liquor store. Both trains arrived on time yesterday, though with small cargoes. The At lantic express was started from Albu querque. The new Mexican settlement, be tween White Oaks and Manchester, is building up rapidly. It contains about seventy-live inhabitants. The Gallinas river is being used for a new purpose, and that is the floating of ties from the mountains. The floods are serving a good purpose. Judge Sumner yesterday received a . new Piano for his parlor. It is a well linished, nice-toned instrument, and shows good taste on the part of tire Judge. The Southern Pacific R. R. has suf fered greatly from washouts at various points along the line in Arizona. Near Casa Grande, ten miles of track was washed here and there, calling -out an army of workmen. Yesterday the feast of San Salva ' dor was celebrated in honor of the President, Rev. Salvador Personne, of the Las Vegas College. It was not intended as a public demon stration but was more of a family mat ter pertaining to the teachers and pu pils of the college. It embraced music, literary exercises and outdoor sports, and was greatly enjoyed by the boys of the college. Yesterday Fred. Harvey, manager of the A., T. & S. F. eating houses, made a change of rates for transient railroad men at the Depot Hotel in this city. Hitherto they have had the benefit of half rates at this and other houses along the line, but now they receive the benefit of only one-fourth reduc tion. We have heard of changes at no other point on the line. The boys are very indignant. There is a great scarcity of houses for rent in Las Vegas at the present time. Rents are unnecessarily high. It would be a great advantage to the city if- a large number of neat, well built cottages were erected. The builders would realize a good profit on their investment and the city would be benefited. People would be more free to settle among us if rents were not so high as at present. The water remaining high in the Puerco at the crossing of the A. T. & S. F., three miles from La Joya, it has been impossible to put in the bridge re cently washed out. It is hoped that it will be completed some time to-day in order that trains may cross on schedule time early to-morrow morning. Hamp son aud Wood's pile driving oufits are at work and will complete the job as early as possible. A transfer was to have been made last night. An engineering party is now engaged in making the preliminary survey of a railway line in the northern part of Col fax county. The gurvey is now being made southeast from Long's Canyou. The lines crosses the road between Springer and Cimarron about midway between those places, There is evi dently some railway manager shrewd enough to see that the proposed railway route through Long's Canyon into Col fax county and via Cimarron, Mora nnd Las Vegas, is worthy of attention. Some company is certain to utilize this route. Mr. C. B. Phillips, of Toledo, Ohio, . was in the city yesterday and left for Cerillos, New Mexico, where he, with other gentlemon, are erecting a smol Ur which i operated under an entirely new process. The ores by this new smelter will be subjected to sufficient heat to vaporize every substance, after which the separation of the precious metala is effected. It will bo run by coal oil, and if successful will revolutionize mining, and the cost of reduction will be greatly reduced, rendering mines carrying low grade oro and heretofore regarded aa almost worthless highly valuable. Trinidal News. THE KIM. A special dispatch received early yes terday from a reliable gentleman then at Rincón, conveys the intelligence that the renegada Chief Nane with fifty murderous Apaches crossed the line of the railroad on the Jornado, near Eagle station Friday afternoon. They were going in the direction of the Organ mountains. This is probably the same band that demoralized Mitchell's Black Range party at Rock Ranch Wednes day forenoon. oalil IaYatlfft. - Prominent business men, capitalists and mining experts are flocking to New Mexico to make an examination of our rich mineral districts. Not one section but all are claiming attention. Just now Colfax county is commanding a deal of attention, as the following notes from the Cimarron News and Press show: "Mr. I. W. England, publisher of the N. Y. Sum, Mr. Chauncy Kilmer, a large manufacturer of paper, and Prof. Austin, of New York, arrived on Sunday and were met by Col. Berg mann at Springer, who brought them to Cimarron. The party will visit the Uto Creek district and the Rebel Chief mine, the property of the Cimarron Mining Co., of New York, to determine if the broken Howland pulverizer is to be repaired or replaced by a stamp mill. Messrs Geo. T Atkinson, of Philadel phia, E. G. Sabree, John B. Atkinson, David Banks, jr., and E. G. Sebree, jr., of Kentucky, arrived in Cimarron yes terday. They came for the purpose of looking at the copper properties on the Ponil side of Old Baldy with the view of investing. The party will re main here several days." Earned h TncutlM. Mr. W. J. Sharp, Chief Train Dis patcher of the Southern division, will leave for a month's vacation Septem ber first. He will first visit his mother who resides at Lamia, Canada, and then go to Quebec where he will meet a party of friends just returning from Eu rope. Mr. Sharp has earned a vacation, for since the rainy season set in he has been kept almost constantly at his desk, and has been worked hard. He is now suffering from overwork, but his month's rest will probably find him in good condition for any amount of hard work. During his absence J. D. Sommers, of San Marcial, will sub for him. J(k and Ladder Company. There was a meeting of the members of the hook and ladder company on Fri day night, and the following officers were elected: President and Captain, B. E. Johnson; Secretary. F. E. Evans; Treasurer, H. Scherer. A committee was appointed to secure suits, and it is expected that they will be ready on the evening of the grand ball to be given by the company in or der that the members may appear in uniform. The suits will consist of blue breeches, blue sailor's shirts and white caps. The ball will be given in Dr. Milli gan'snew building on the evening of the 24th, and it is hoped that our citi zens will turn out in good force to en courage our fire laddies. East Las Vegas will have a good po lice force again in a few days. Ex-Chief-of-Police Franklin has finally con sented to accept his old position and will qualify in a day or two. He has the privilege of chosing one man who will act with him, and will probably se lect ex-Officer Mclntire, as Arthur Jil son has had enough of the police busi ness. Franklin is the best man in this western country for chief, and the city was never quieter than when he and Jilson were the guardians of the peace. There will never be any necessity for a Committee of Safety as long as Frank lin keeps on the force as his reputation as a gritty and cool man is known to all bad men. Academy Comineuctuieat. The eleventh annual commencement of the Academy of the Immaculate Conception will take place on Tuesday, August 10th. A very entertaining pro gramme has been arranged, and the Sisters will aim to make this the best commencement that they have yet had. During the season of high water in the Gallinas one of our citizens, who stood on the bridge meditatively look ing up stream, saw smoke curling up wards as though from the smokestack of a steamboat. He rubbed his eyes half imagining himself a Rip Van Win kle, whose few minutes reverie covered the lapse of years, and in the meantime the river had been rendered navigable. But it was only the steam from the little engine that Sup't. Wise, of the water service, had caused to be set at work cleaning out the water pipes from the railroad company s well a mile and a half up the Gallinas. Billy Burton has made his prepara tions to entertain all with the very best wines, liquors and cigars during court week. His saloon has all the conve niences for washing, combing, writing a letter or reading. In the caso of the Territory vs. Benig no Jaramillo, ex-Sheriff of this county, tried last week at Santa Fe, judgment was rendered against the defendant for $2,098. It is difficult to see how it could have been otherwise. H. T. Ceperly is up from Glorieta. W. C. Hadley will be at home to-day. N. L. Rosenthal came in on yester day's train. Billy Putman, of Wolf & Putman, is sick at the Springs. W. V. Cox, of Silver City, is regis tered at the St. Nicholas. Miss Nettie Crane, of fct. Louis, is a guest at the St. Nicholas Hotel. C. R. Browning was much better yes terday, and it is hoped that he will soon be out. Mrs. J. L. Carey and daughter, of Shelbina. Mo., are cuests at the Sum ner House. Mrs. McClure went over to Tipton ville yesterday on a visit to friends in that locality. L. Sulzbacher, Esq., and his daugh ter Rachel returned yesterday from a week' 8 visit in Santa Fe. Mr. R. Armstrong, representing the Geneva Nursery, is back from a suc cessful trip in the south. Dr. Sutfin will arrive from the Jicar rilla Mountains in a few days. He has been working some claims in that rich district. J. R. Scott and W. H. Hoover, of Topeka, arrived yesterday. They are making a trip of pleasure through the Territory. Miss Louisa Tipton and Mrs. S. E. Tipton returned home yesterday. They have been visiting Mrs. McClure, of this city, for several days. Major Will Dowlin and wife, of Fort Stanton, arrived yesterday and are stopping at the Exchange. Mrs. Dow lin will go from here to Denver. Mr. John Delno is back from his stock ranch in Colfax County, New Mexico. He reports his Jersey cows and tho roughbred colts in line and growing condition. Denver Tribune. Mrs. Major Vaughan and her accom plished daughter are now on their way from Leavenworth to El Paso to rejoin the Major, who is now Chief Engineer of the Mexican Central Railway. Senator Dorsey, the great Star Route manipulator, is still at his ranche in Colfax County. His taxes in that coun ty for this year amount to $2,000, and he drove over to Cimarron and paid up like a little man. N. B. Stoneroad, ot this county, who returned from New Mexico last Sun day, informs us that he will move with his family to that Territory and make it his future home. His large interest in the wool growing business calls him thither. He proposes leaving in Octo ber. Merced (Cal.) Express. The Denver papers ot inuay re ported Mr. Chas. S. Gleed, the genial and brainy chief of the literary bureau of the A.. T. & S. F. as sick abed with fever again. There must be some mis take about it, as the Kansas City Even ing Star of Thursday noted his passage through the city on that day. Comiueunememt of Laa Vega College. The school year of this important ed ucational institution is drawing to a close, and the public examinations will continue during the next week. These examinations show thorough and sys tematic instruction, and demonstrate most satisfactory progress on the part of the pupils. On Monday, the 15th inst., will transpire the Fourth Annual Commencement of the college. A splendid programme is arranged, em bracing exercises in philosophy, physics, chemistry, music and literary performances. The college band will furnish music and a large number of prizes will be distributed. An impor tant feature of the commencement will be an address by our present territorial delegate, Hon. Tranquilino Luna, There will be a large number of visitors from abroad. LORDLY LUXURY. Urand Opening mí Locke' Eleg-unt Clnb House. There has been not a little curiosity excited to know what was contained within the four walls of the new fire proof building on Centre street, East Las Vegas, leased by F. D. Locke for a club house. Last night the building was thrown open and Mr. Locke gave a grand opening. From early in the evening till a late hour the club rooms were thronged. It was not sheer curi osity that caused the crowd to gather and congregate in a perfect jam, but Lord Locke is well known and very popular with the sporting fraternity, and they were on hand in full force, to gether with many of our best citizens. The rooms are fitted up in a luxuri ous style. On the first floor is a large hall, and in the second story a largo club room, with two smaller private rooms. They are all laid with body Brussels carpets, each room with a car pet of different design, all handsome. Everything about the house is of the finest quality, elegant and tasty, with no tinsel or shoddy. In the hall is a massive black walnut bar, with large mirrors and ornaments behind, while the shelves are covered with handsome decanters and glassware, each piece marked with a cute little padlock. The ice chest is of black walnut, of very pretty design and elegantly and neatly ornamented. The side-board and liqucr case is of the same character and is filled with the best stock of liquers, cordials and wines ever brought to this Territory. There are two hand some billiard tables of the finest pat tern turned out by the celebrated Brunswick & Balke factory, with all the latest improvements. The cue racks are of walnut, one in particular, for private cues, each inlid with ivory and marked with the owner's name., kept under lock and key. The walls arc hung with fine pictures, chroraos, steel engravings and portraits of celebrities. They are arranged so as to give a very good effect, the grouping of celebrities being excellent. The approach to the club rooms on the second floor is made either through th hall or by means of a side entrance. These rooms are similarly ornamented with pictures, and the windows draped with lace curtains and ornamented by handsome lambriquins. A dumb-waiter Ceonnects the larger room with the baS All the rooms are decorated with costly wall papers hung by Bolton Bros., of this city, who have exhibited great taste. The wine-cellar underneath is stocked with a large of well assorted liquors of the finest brands, and among other specialties is '00 whisky. Scores of people were constantly passing through the rooms inspecting this elegant club house, the finest one of the kind between Chicago and the Rockies. Marcellino & Bofl'a's orches tra furnished good music throughout the evening. At 11 o'clock an elegant supper was served and all expressed their well-wishes for the success of thft proprietor. The dog star now reigns in the heav ens, and dog days on earth. Having just returned from the east ern cities on a purchasing tour, and through the facilities of plenty HEADY CASH.
