DAILY GAZETTE THURSDAY, AUGUST 11, 1881. OACETTK GLF.AXI JIGS. The gas com pan- expects a lot of metres to-day. M. Friedman & 13ro. received a large amount of wool yesterday. Everything is lively on the railroad now, and traffic is brisk. Gardener & Gillies have commenced their new store on Center street. Payne & Bartlett are putting a stone addition of forty feet to their jewelry store. B. Stoops & (Vs. rendering tank is on the road. It will be here in about ten or fifteen day. Joe Theobald has taken possession of Col. Steele's old office and was yester day engaged in unboxing his goods, Herman Cohn of the Boston Clothing Store yesterday received intelligence of the death of his father in Germany. The sonorous voice of the high ball dealer is not heard on our streets these moonlight nights. Court is in session. The late rains have started a splendid crop of new grass all over the mesa be tween the Olguin Hill and this town. Gen. Hatch is in the field against the Indians. Ho left Santa Fe for Ft. Craig on Tuesday ostensibly for that pur pose. Las Vegas Chapter No. 3, Royal Arch Masons meets to-night at 8 o'clock. Work, pastmaster; visiting companions cordially invited to attend. Billy Burton is an extensive and ju dicious advertiser. His standing ad vertisement of his saloon appears regu larly in the New York Clipper. An ice cream social will be held at the residence of Mr. Jefferson Raynolds on Friday evening next (August 12th.) A good time is looked for and the pub lie is invited. Bol h express trains on time yester day. The Atlantic express did not make connection with the Southern Pa cific train at Detning Tuesday night, as the S. P. R. R. is having a siego at washouts. Daniel Taylor, formerly foreman of the Gazette job rooms, who opened an office in Albuquerque a few months ago, has consolidated his office with that of the Journal. He is man ager of the amalgamated offices. We should like to see a copy of that bill of fare which is referred to so often by the Santa Fe New Mexican and Democrat. The latter says "it is the most gorgeous thing on the table of the Exchange Hotel and a matter of pride to the paper and the proprietor." Mrs. W. T. Savage's house on Zion hill north of the Methodist church took tire yesterday afternoon and had it not been for the prompt action of the neigh bors several dwellings would have been destroyed. The flames however were soon squelched and but little damage was done. The citizens' committee on police on the East side find it a difficult matterto secure two competent officers. They offered the positions to ex-Officers Jil son and Franklin, but Franklin posi tively rcfu.es to serve, and Franklin is evidently more inclined to fill the office of U. S. Deputy Marshal, than Marshal of Las Vegas. Brooks, the railroad man, who got a young fellow drunk or drugged, in or der to secure his job at braking on the Southern division is likely to be "fired'" by the railroad company. If the offi cials of the road don't do it, the boys will probably attend to the matter themselves. Such games as that don't work successfully in this country. On account of the absence of the pres ident, both vice-presidents and treas urer of the San Miguel County Stock Growers, the association had but a very slim attendance yesterday. No busi ness was transacted, and fears are en tertained that unless more enthusiasm is manifested at future meetings this as sociation will cease to exist. The sec retary will leave this evening for home, having given up all hopes of effecting a meeting now. An engineering party of a dozen men that has been engaged in survey ing a route for the Denver & New Or leans R. R. is at Pueblo, having com pleted the line from Denver to that city. Engineer W. J. Smith is now awaiting orders from headquarters to learn what the next objective point may be, This party had already run a line for a distance of 120 miles but was af terwards ordered to run a line to Pu eblo. It we are not very much mista ken the next line will go to Trinidad and then through Long's canyon and via Cimarron and Mora to Las Vegas. The Denver Times announces tha re tirement of Stanley Wood from the edi torial staff of the Colorado Springs Ga zette. Mr. Wood is one of the most trenchant and interesting writers in the West, and his witty, humorous, satiri cal and Imaginative writings have won for him deserved high praise. His res ignation from the Gazette staff is cer tain to be. regretted by the readers of that journal. Mr. Wood is the author of "Brittle Silver," a comic opera that has been highly complimented and which will be one of the attractions of the theatrical season in Chicago. District Vmrt. j Court was in session all day yester day v . I McDonald vs. Overhuls occupied the attention of the court during the fore noon and McCaffrey vs. Baca in the afternoon. Andy Souter, formerly foreman of Wilson Waddingham's sheep camp made application to become a citizen of the United States and took out his first paers. The following cases are set for to day: CRIMINAL. 1016 Territory vs Foleto Gonzales. 1087 Territory vs. Nicholas Griego. 1197 Territory vs. Jose Serrano & Francisco Lucero. 1198 Territory vs. Jose Serrano & Francisco Lucero. Motions, etc 1230, 1224. Oar Delegate In the Field. Hon Tranquilino Luna, our Delegate to Congress, has taken the field against the Apaches at the head of a body of men forty strong. There was great ex citement in Los Lunas on Sunday when the news of the attack of a freighting outfit was received, and it was also re ported that the Apaches had attacked the Luna ranches. Accordingly the militia company was ordered out and in the absence of his brother, who is captain of the company, Don Tranquil ino placed himself at the head of the men, and having been thoroughly equiped the party set out. The train attacked by the Apaches consisted of four wagons belonging to Dionicio Ba ca of Round Valley, left Los Lunas Saturday evening loaded with ncxTchan dise. Two of the wagons were not mo lested, but the other two some distance behind were pounced upon by a band of fifty reds in the neighborhood of Tres Hermanos forty miles below Los Lu nas. The wagons and their contents valued at $3,000 were burned, but the trainmaster escaped. A son of Martin Boyd of Los Lunas, was also reported to have been killed by the Indians on his ranch, near the Arizona line. Anileraon'N Accident. E. D. Anderson an Adams Express Messenger on the El Paso branch of t he A. T. & S. F. met with a serious aeci dent Tuesday evening just after the east bound express train left El Paso, While handling freight in the express car he caught the hammer of his six shooter and the gun was discharged. The ball struck him in the right thigh and scored along till it lodged in the calf of the right leg, from which it was after wards cut out. As there was no doctor in Rincón, at the end of the run, the train was turned back and Anderson taken to El Paso for surgical attention Mr. E. B. Allen, route agent of the company, yesterday received a telegram stating that the patient is likely to be able to be around again in about ten davs. Anderson is a very faithful and gentlemauly young man whose people reside in Denver.. He is well known in Las Vegas having freighted from here for a long time. He has only been on the road about two months, and had only made a few trips between Rincón and El Paso. JchhU College. Architect Wheelock had finished his plans for the proposed eastern front to the Jesuit College in this city, when Father Personne and his associates de cided on a number of important changes. He is now at work on a new set of drawings, as it is proposed to have a new chapel and a large exhibí bition hall in the new structure, and the plans will thus be necessarily altered It will be a much finer structure than as at first proposed, and will be an or nament to Las Vegas. The central building will be fifty-one feet front and ninety-nine feet deep, flanked by two wings each 90 feet front and 57 feet deep, the buildings two stories and half high. They will contain, infirma ries, laboratory, museum, music-rooms, etc., ana an elegant exhibition hall 48 by 90 feet and 20 feet high, and the chapel 48 by 70 feet and 15 feet high The total frontage of the building will be in the neighborhood of 250 feet. The plans will be prepared as soon as possi ble. Survey for Water WrkN. The survey of the line for the water works made by C. Frank Allen for the Agua riira company was run from the northwest corner of the plaza along the road to the Hot Springs for a distance of about a quarter of a mile, and then a bee line to the little Mexican settlement just below the Springs. From this pla za the line crosses the arroyo, and skirts the hills to the north end of tin Hot Springs bath house, about five and a half miles from the plaza in West Las Vegas. Mr. Allen reported two good sites for the reservoir, etc. , one about a quarter of a mile up the canyon from the bath house, where the Gallinas runs between two large rocks and could bo easily dammed; the other, half a mile farther u,p where there is another excellent site? there being a little open spot on the north side of the river.
