MINERAL, CITY.
The Mines and Future Prospecta of
Thifl Qacen City of the Mountain!!.
This enterprising young city is situ
ated at the base of the mountains, six
teen miles due west from this city.
Much has been said and considerable
written about this camp and the mines,
but a complete understanding cannot
be had until one walks over the field.
He then sees why the miners are so per
sistent and have worked so faithfully
for so many months. They have struck
a good thing and they know it. They
can well afford to work away quietly
and abide their time for it will not bo
long before the carbonate deposits of
this wonderful hill will show to the
world that they are second to none in
the west. The little town which takes
its name from the mines, nestles at
the very foot of the mountains at the
junction of Tecolote and Blue creeks:
The Mexican name for the Blue, how
ever, is Hondo, meaning deep. The
scenery is very beautiful. The abrupt
mountains, covered with heavy
pine timber, intermingled with groves
of cottonwood, aspen andspruiceforma
picture, the beauty of which cannot be
surpassed anywhere. A number of
business houses have been erected. No
table among these are the store and liv
ery stable of Hilty Bros., the saloons of
Lewis, Spouss & Co., and the new hotel
of Capt. Hearon. A large tract of land
has been laid off into town lots, and
preparations made for the founding of
a large city. Numberless springs of
clear cold water pour forth from the
mountain sides, which in connection
with the pure mountain air would bring
the flush of health to an almost hope
less consumptive. The mountains near
the town reach an elevation of nearly
eleven thousand feet and are filled with
all kinds of game, such as turkey, bear,
deer, and some few elk are still to be
found in the higher elevations. Tho
deep canons formed by Gold, Blue and
Tecolato creeks and the Gallinas river,
can all be seen from one position.
These canons, taken in connection with
Hermit's Peak, the blue Santa Fo
range as it stretches off toward the
south, and tho limitless stretch of
plains, which spread out from Las Ve
gas toward the east, form a landscape
difficult to surpass in any country.
The mines are being intelligently de
veloped. More and better work has
been done in this camp than in any
other of its age in the Territory. The
ore is principally carbonates and looks
well. Nearly all the mines have been
tested and show silver in paying quan
tities. True the ore is not very high
grade, but the vast deposits and the
ease with which tho ore can be obtained
are the great advantages of this dis
trict. Near the summit of the hill the first
mine that presents itself is the "Little
Mogul," owned by Chas. Miller, 20-foot
shaft, assay 11 ounces silver,
"Ferdon Deposit," and "Sunshine,"
Colorado boys, 40-foot shaft, assay forty
dollars per ton gold and silver.
The "Wide West," Colorado boys,
drifting tunnel from Tecolote Canyon.
Tliis tunnel, when finished, will be
about 125 feet long.
The "Blue Canyon," same owners,
40-foot inclino and shaft.
"Little Mary," Fraley & Co., 40-foot
open cut and tunnel, assay $83 per ton.
"Tip-Top," Fraley & Co., 30-foot
open cut and tunnel, shows well.
Tho "Annie Carl," Colorado boys,
05-foot open cut and tunnel.
"Carbonate Queen," Evans, Hubbs
& Co., 75-foot tunnel, white carbonates.
The best developed mine in the camp
and assays well. The "Carbonate
King" and "Belle Evans" also belong
to this company.
"Tho Carroll," H. N. Cornell, 65-foot
open cut and tunnel.
The "St. Nicholas," Wm. Keesee, in
same locality, shows well.
The "Winsor," "Magnolia" and
"Alice," in Blue Canyon, owned by
Ira W. Smith, all look well, and the as
sessment work has-been done.
,The "Kinsley," Hubbs & Co., tunnel
and shaft 35 feet.
"Ellen Wood," Chambers, Hedden &
Cross, 35-foot tunnel.
"Optic" and "Little Frank," Barney,
Lessley & Co., both good mines.
"Antelope," J. P. Ryan, 40-foot tun
nel. "John Hancock," one of the best
mines in the camp, owned by Jon Han
cock. "New Discovery," B. F. Jones, Noak
Castor & Co., tunnel. Assays 8i ounces
silver per ton, on Carbonate Hill.
The above gives a moderate concep
tion of tho development work dona in
the camp.
