DAILY GAZETTE SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1S81. OXLETTV. I.EINIXií. ti rand free lunch at Billy's to-night. Mr. Hugh Fritehard is able tu be out on the street again. The railroad people sayfthat travel is unusually light just now. Felix Martinez bought a fine piano yesterday oí Mareellino, BoiTa & Perez. Free lunch at the Exchange Saloon to-night, presided over by J. D. Wolf. The early fall styles of gents1 and Indies' hats just received by Isidor Stern. Horn & Matthews, at the Star Light Saloon, will spread their free lunch to night. Dr. Cunningham eontiuues to mend; lie sat up and ate his breakfast yester day morning. The St. Nicholas Bar will be open for the tirst time to-day with bran new and convenient appointments. Work is progressing on the college building, and probably no building is worse needed in town than this. The army of peddling Pueblos that swarmed into town last week, has dwindled to a few solitary individuals. Attention is called to the act recently promulgated prohibiting fast riding and driving on the Rio (íallinas bridge. The recent advance in express tariff is said to have had the effect of cutting down business.in that line, very materi ally. A policeman will be stationed upon the bridge, and any one violating this order will be pronptly arrested and lined. The Presbyterian people complain that the Acequia is an intolerable nuis ance. When the water is turned on it overflows and makes a great pond around the new church. The new car stable on Twelfth street will be a substantial stone structure, l.'.rge and commodious, and arranged upon the very best plan. Six more of Warner's lots sold yester day by Capt. Fitzgerrell, and more to follow. Rev. J. E. Cohenour was the purchaser of four of them. Mareellino, Bolla & Perez telegraphed yesterday for another lot of pianos and organs. It is their aim to sell many instruments and to keep them at such prices that everybody can buy. If W. Oscar Seeor, of Elmyra, New York, who was formerly employed at the gasworks in this city, will call at the o flic c of J. J. Fitzgerrell, he will hear of something to his advantage. Mr. Isidor Stern's new and handsome brick residence on Bridge street is growing day by day, and when com pleted will be one of the best residences in town. Mr. Wheelock is the archi tect. .We are informed that one-third inter est in the Smoky Hill mine at White Oaks, has changed hands for a good round price. The parties to the tran suction were M. Beckers and 1). T Mooney, of the National Hotel. J. D. Lane has brought a car load of very large and excellent watermelons and is selling them out at low prices They are the best melons we have seen, They will be delivered in town every morning until the whole lot is disposed of. Si Ilysinger left yesterday for Col. Stoneroad's ranch, to take charge of the business during the colonel's 'ab sence east. Si is a jolly boy, and . we predict the change will be a benefit as well as a pleasure to him. The ladies of the Episcopal Mite So ciety solicit plain sewing, and will fill orders in good style and at reasonable rates. Those desiring such work may leave their orders with Mrs. A. C. Stockton or Mrs. Charles Wheelock. Two soldiers attracted a good share of attention on the street yesterday, in consequence of an overdose of Vegas "bug juice." Each one seemed intent upon supporting the other, and each was equally incapable of carrying him self straight. Mr. N. A. Bennett, who has served H. J. Holmes so faithfully, will retire from the ice business and go back to his first love, the saw and plane. . Mr. Ben nett is a workman of merit, and will ac cept a position with Mr. Baker as fore man on outside work. The management of the Kansas City fair evinced commendable enterprise in getting together immediately after the fire by which their buildings were destroyed, and resolving to clear away the ticbrin that night and go on with the .program the following day. The nights are growing long and the amusement season is at hand. Billy Burton, who has the management of Baca Hall for the winter, is alive to the interests of the town and the amuse ment going public, and has inserted a standing advertisement in the New York (.'Upper, advising traveling com panies and troupes of the accessibility of Las Vegas, mid the advantages of the hall and town or entertainments. We may thus expect that Las Vegas will not be slighted this year for want of in formation an'd knowledge of our advantages. MAXCFACTOKIE. Tbelr Relation to Oar Prosperity. In a growing city like La9 Vegas manufactories are of prime importance. They not only utilize the productions of the surrounding country and thus build up tributary trade; but they give us a wealth-producing element that is at once a substantial and enduring oasis of permanent prosperity. No class of men that could be induced to settle here can be of more advantage to a town than the skilled mechanics that a variety of manufacturing interests would at- tract. Such men, as a rule, are intelligent, ; i i ; i - i . nonesi anu progressive, anu us buuii, they are truly the bone and sinew of a ' progressive community, llicy produce more than they consume, and thus add constantly to the material wealth of the community in which thejT live. It is a custom all over the land for towns de sirous of manufactories to, in some way or other, pay a bonus to secure them, i and whatever is customary in this re- gard iu other towns may reasonably bo expected of our citizens, and the truth of the matter is, we may not expect any marked success in this important mat ter without prompt and public-spirited conformity to established usage. .Mineral Cnbiiiot. The very line cabinet of minerals of Mr. Essinger, is on exhibition at Locke's. This is a collection of roiner also well worth examination and study, as it embraces specimens of ore from every section and from the most famous mines, covering all grades. It is not only valuable as showing the different classes of ores, but is interesting in a lithologieal view, containing beautiful specimens of crystalization, jasper, ehal cedany, garnets and precious stones. The cabinet is valued low at four hun dred dollars and we understand that it will be rallied off. This will give all an opportunity to win the collection without much cost. The question of the disability of the President is attracting quite an amount of discussion. In a recent issue of the New York Sun this question is edito rially argued at great length, and the conclusion is readied that as long as the public business is not in danger of suffering immediate and material dam age on account of the inability of the Executive to do that which the law re quires at his hands, the agitation of this question is premature. The article referred to concludes as follows: It is only fair toward Gen. Arthur to say that we do not believe that he has ever for a moment thought of attempt ing to assume the ollice of President under any circumstances that have yet existed; and although it may show a confidence in human nature at which skeptics may smile, we believe, and have reason to believe, that (Jen. Ar thur has, fronrthe beginning all along, earnestly desired the recovery of (Jen. Garfield. In our judgment, the United States, during the last seventy days, have pre sented the most sublime spectacle in the whole history of human govern ments. Fifty millions of pcopie gov erning themselves, abstaining even from any act of violence toward the most abhorred of criminals, the assas sin of the President; the great crowds collected along the line by the of the prostrate form of Gen. passage Garfield through three States, greeting; him everywhere with regardful silence, re straining the Vheers that rose sponta neously to their lips, lest the noise should disturb him; the necessary, rou tine business of the Executive Depart ment moving snfbothly on, like nicely adjusted, well-oiled, noiseless machin ery. Would that Thomas Jefferson could have lived to behold this day, the fulfilment of his fondest hopes and brightest visions, showing how little government an intelligent, self-respecting people really require. This is true liberty! We were pleased to meet, yesterday, Lieut. A. E. Wood, of the 4th Cavalry, and Quarter-master of the battalion which left here yesterday for Fort Win gate. Lieut. Wood is a close student of his profession, and is noted for tho roughness in tactics, quick decision and through-going character. He has seen much service in campaigning against the Cora-anches, Kiowa and Cheyennes in Western Texas and the Staked Plains, and has been more re cently with his regiment in the San Juan country, where there was at one time imminent danger of a Ute out break. It will be remembered by our older citizens that Lieutenants Wood and Wheeler were in Las Vegas in Sep tember, 1875, and purchased a herd of , three thousand sheep for the Indian Agency at Fort Sill, in the Indian Ter ritory. They bought the sheep of M. Brunswick and Don Trinidad Homero, and drove them across- the plains to Sill with the loss of only thirty head The sociable at the new Presbyterian Church last evening was largely at tended and a complete success in every particular. Mrs. S. L. Sloan, Mrs. J. Raynolds, Mrs. James Garrard, Mrs.B. B. Borden, Mrs. J. B. Wootten, Mrs. Geo. Dinkel, Mrs. Capt. Stark, Mrs. T. B. Mills, Mrs. B. Stoops and Mrs. C. B. Smith constituted the committee oí ar rangements, and these excellent ladies had left nothing undone that would contribute to the enjoyment of those who attended. The supper was excel lent, and everyone left in a supremely good humor with himself and every body else, and a high appreciation of the excellent arrangements of the com mittee of ladies who had charge of the entertainment. Marcus, of Marcus & Clemm, is home from his purchasing trip to the east. He bought a large stock of cloth ing, boots, shoes and furnishing goods, which will be here for fall and winter trade. Col. G. W. Stoneroad returned to Cabra Springs yesterday. While here he negotiated the sale of several bands of fine sheep, which he makes a spec ialty of on his ranch. Mr. French, of Santa Fe, of the firm of 11. G. Dun & Co., is in the city. This is a most reliable agency, and no pains are spared to ascertain the financial standing of all business houses in the country. G. F. Wheelock, of the firm of Rob- erts & Wheelock, of Las Vegas, was married in that city yesterday. He is spending his honeymoon with his brother, Jesse M. Wheelock, at this place. Albnqucrquc Journal. Mr. F. O. Kihlberg, road commis sioner, is utilizing convict labor in im provements upon the streets. lie had a force of jail birds at work yesterday upon the avenues in the Plaza Park, cutting and removing the weeds and grass, and smoothing down the rough places. He proposes to replace the cottonwood trees planted there with maples and locusts, and to test the growth of the eucalyptus, or fever tree, in this climate. When the avenues of this park shall be bordered by hand some trees, and fringed with verdant lawns and blooming flowers, watered by the spray of fountains and enlivened with the music of birds, it will be not only an ornament to the city, but a de lightful place to rest and refresh one's self in the soft, mellow twilight of our delightful autumn evenings. At a trial before a Mexican Justice of the Peace in one of the neighboring precincts, recently, was an excellent example of the manner in which some of the courts are run in New Mexico country towns. The Alcalde took his ! place in the court with all the dignity ! of a supreme judge. The witnesses I were called and examined, the court ! meantime leaning back in his chair, having the appearance of a man of great wisdom. The case was brought to a close and left to the decision of his honor. He was prepared to do his duty. Slowly rising, he pulled a carefully prepared document from his pocket, and read his decision. Albuquerque Journal. A Mexican, whose name we were un able to learn, but who liad been im bibing quite freely of whisky, laid him self down yesterday afternoon, near Rosenwald Bros.' store, in old town, to sleep off his drunken fit. He never wakened, for some of his friends picked him up soon after and found that life had flown. He was an old man and had already lived as long as is usually allowed. New Mexican. The mite sociable at the residence of Mr. A. Whitmore last evening, was a decided success. Quite a number of ladies and gentlemen were present, and Mr. Whitmore and his amiable and accomplished lady made, everyone feel at home. Altogether the sociable was a pleasant affair, and was so appreciat ed by nil present. Charlie Roland, who is well and fa vorably known in this' city shot and killed a ruffian in San Marcial yester day. A bully was beating a little boy in a most brutal manner when Roland interfered and requested him to desist. The man told him it was none of his business, drew out a knife and made an attack upon Roland, cutting a se vere gash in the neck. The next mo ment the cowardly whelp was a dead man, for Charlie immediately drew his revolver and shot him on the spot. As the story reaches us the killing was perfectly justifiable, amd Charlie Ro land did just what any good man would have done under like circumstances. Walter Cooper, of Cooper Bros., Trinidad, yesterday finished papering and fixing up the old stand until re cently occupied by Mareellino & Boffa, on Center street. He will open it out as a first-class candy factory, and will make as fine candy as can be found any where. Exchange Hotel. The Exchange Hotel, on the plaza, under the excellent management of Jack Gehegan, is recovering its old time prestege, and now has an excellent run of custom.
