r Í DAILY GAZETTE FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1881. GAZETTE LEASINGS. Property sold in twenty-four hours by Calvin Fisk, Optic Block. We lead the trade in real estate. Come and see if we don't. Calvin Fisk, Optic Block. A benefit for Billy Burton, Manager of Baca Hall, is announced for Satur day evening. We understand that Dr. J. M. Cun ningham will soon become a citizen of the West Side. Hon. T. B. Catron den't get cross when a case is called and his witnesses can't be found. Fitzgerrell, the live real estate man has a number of heavy transfers to make in a day or two. The ladies Sewing Society will meet this evening, at the house of Mrs. Fred. Wheelock, at 2:30 this afternoon. We have received the New Mexico Christian Advocate for the month of Oc tober, and find it quite an intertaimng number. Judge Lee amuses himself in court, when not in trial, in making character sketches with a pencil, at which he is quite an adept. Messrs. Furlong & Ticer are opening quite a handsome and well selected stock of books and stationery in the postoffice building. August Lemke has opened a whole sale and retail liquor store in Andrew Dold's building on the Plaza, and dub bed it Pearl Sample Room. Fitzgerrell, the live real estate man, has an elegant, well-linished and well furnished house and lot for sale at a bargain. Call and see him. Some of the boys on the WTest Side are taking the advice of the Gazette. We saw an oyster can ehasing a dog out of town yesterday afternoon. Judge D. P. Shields takes life in the court room quite as philosophically as he takes it anywhere else ; which ought to giv.e him rank as a philosopher. In the District Court, yesterday, Casi miro Sanchez was found guilty of rape committed upon Lucian a Vigil, and sentenced to six years imprisonment. The case of Brookmire & Rankin was called late yesterday, and as it could not be completed at the afternoon ses sion, an evening session was appointed for it. J. J. Fitzgerrell the Jive real estate man offers to buyers seeking invest ment a number of special bargains in both business and residence property; call and see him. Yesterday was a cold, damp, muddy and disagreeable day. Blue noses and lingers and a general complaining air, attested how little our people are used to this sort of weather. Fitzgerrell, the live real estate man, calls special attention to the valuable lots in Mrs. Judge Ilubbell's addition, opposite the postollice. They will be sold at a great bargain. Attorney-General Catron is doing good work in representing the common wealth in prosecutions. In every crimi nal case that has been tried so far, he has secured a conviction. The funeral of Mr. H. Romero's daughter, Paulita, was quite largely at tended yesterday. Judge Prince ad íourned court to give the members of the bar and the court officials an oppor tunity to attend, We have been selling property so fast lately that wo are compelled to ask those having property for sale to call in at once and place the same on our books. It will be disposed of promptly. Calvin Fisk, Optic Block. W. II. Smith, the new proprietor of the Oyster Bay restaurant, on Center street, is making it a very popular eat ing place. He is rapidly increasing his patronage by courteous treatment of guests and setting np good meals at most reasonable prices. J. J. Fitzgerrell, the live real estate man, says he has a house and lot on Main street, in one of the best neigh borhood in the city, elegantly finished and furnished. Will sell the whole thing from kitchen to parlor complete at a great bargain. The attention of the people of Las Vegas is again called to the Fair and Concert for the benefit of the Las Ve gas College, beginning to-morrow and continuing three days. The program is a good one and the cause is worthy and should be liberally patronized. Joseph Rosenwald and Louis Sulz baeher have purchased of Don Lorenzo Lopez one half of his track of land ly ing between East and West Las Vegas, opposjte the bridge and containing about forty acres. It will be in order to lay off this land into town lots and make a fine addition to the city. From police reports night before last must have been an unusually quiet one and we are reminded that a number of our citizens are out on account of an unhealthy proximity to the District Curt. Wonder if there is any logical connection between these two circum stances. If so, we are in favor of hav ing a court of our own and keeping it in constant running order. General McNulta, of Illinois, on a Tisit to this country in 1875, pronounced it as his opinion that by proper stations for artillery firing this country would be deluged with water. He has studied the subject thoroughly and was con vinced that it would be the case. The theory is, that in the higher strata of the atmosphere there is as much water, in a nne state oi suixtmsion, carneu over this country as there is over the countries of tho most rainfall. By creat ing a chimney through these upper cur rents, which artillery firing will do, their regular flow is broken and a con densation of moisture and rainfall is oc casioned. This is likely also the .effect of railroad trains and the continual whistling of tin locomotives. On the eastern slope of the mountains the con ditions are very favorable for produc- ing rainfall by artificial means and as the railroad extends for distance parallel with such a long the mountain ranges, it is quite likely that we can at tribute the present unnatural rainfall to the effects of the railroad. The Boston ClothingHousehas stock ed up for the fall and winter trade with an unusally large and well assorted stock of fall and winter clothing, gents1 furnishing goods, fine underwear, boots shoes, etc. Messrs. Colin & Bloch are enterprising, careful and accommodat ing business men, and have built up a splendid trade. They do not now pro pose to lose any ground, but go' forward and have purchased such a stock of goods as will fully justify them in ask ing the liberal patronage of an appre ciative public. Any one who now visits them will be sure to receive the most courteous treatment, and will beplease ed with the quality of goods and iow ness of prices. The BuptiMt social. The Baptist social and oyster supper last night was a great success consider ing the inclement weather and mud. Had all attended who purchased tickets the house would have been overcrowd ed. As it was, the room was just com fortably full. The ladies of the con gregation had provided a well-cooked and well-served oyster supper, and all were made to feel at home. By the turnout, it is evident that water will not deter Baptists from an entertainment. We saw a drunken woman on the street last night, reeling and tottering under tho misdirectian of her fuddled brain, muttering profane and incoher ent nonsense; and her bleared eyes, thick tongue and sickening swagger, made us wonder if she were anybody's wife or mother. Were those lips, breath ing foul and filthy curses ever thrilled with a kiss of wifely or motherly love. We have seen much of life, but never enough to familiarize us with such mani festations of the coarser and more loath some vices in woman and we hope we never may it makes us sick at heart to see it. Hook-nosed Jim in a deplorable con dition of plain drunk was in the court house yesterday, and played about the same relation to the surroundings there one would expect a demoralized canine to play in a slaughter house. At the suggestion of Judge Prince he was es corted to the open air and would doubt less have found a lodging place in the "bull-pen" but from the fact that his attorney had promised to get him out of town, and the authorities were too friendly to Las Vegas to obstruct so benevolent a purpose with regard to its future well-being. J. W. Barney was up before Judge fcteelc yesterday, on the charge of as sault, and was sentenced to pay a fine of five dollars, and spend thirty days in the "bull pen." Mr. Barney appealed from his honor's decision to the District Court, in one case, and we learned that another warrant was out for his arrest yesterday evening, on the charge of dis turbing the peace. uazcttc Brother Koagler, please do me the kindness to correct the above and place me right before the public by publish ing the following facts : I brought the suit for assault and battery, and the de fendants swore adversely, and instead of the case being dismissed at the plain tiff's cost, the plaintiff was fined $3.00 and cost and sentenced to thirty days imprisonment, from which decision an appeal was taken and a bond given to the District Court. J. W. Barney. The advance agent of the Nellie Boyd Dramatic Company is about making ar rangements with Billy Burton to occu py Baca Hall for a week's entertain ment commencing on the evening o itie "4111. jNcuie uoytt has a new conv pany this season, new plays and a brass band. Ihey will play that popular drama " Hazel Kirk," which has such an extensive run in the east ; also "The Bankers Daughter" and many other new and favorite plays. Nellie Boye was well liked when here last year, anil we hope they will visit us again. .uisinci Joun convenea last evening at half-past seven o'clock, to continue the hearing of the case of Brookmire Kankin vs. 11. C. and J. W. McDonald and C. B. Smith. Upon the call of the jury it was announced that Antonio Lo i pez, one oi ine jurors, was sick, and counsel'not consenting to proceed with eleven jurors, the case went over unti nine o'clock this morning, Attorney-General Catron, yesterday, entered a nolle pros, in the case of the lerntory vs. Hook-nosed Jim, a client of Judge Steele, upon condition that ho should agree to leave town by morning PERSONAL. Louis Sulzbachcr, Esq., complains that we mentioned his court in connec tion with the second-class justice mills of the city. G. W. Hartman, of San Miguel, got to Las Vegas yesterday on his return from Kansas City, where he went some days since to purchase goods. Mrs. Bowman, of Perry. Iitzgerrell, who won his com- mission with urant at viCKSDurg, is now riding the top wave of the real es tate boom. Yesterday he sold Dr. Cun ningham ten lots on the Buena Vista addition and three choice lots more to Judge Prince. He also sold the Fair- view Hotel at Mineral City for Captain Hearon. There seems to be quite a demand for wood and coal in town. Some enter prising citizen with a 'drove of burros or a team and wagon might take ad vantage of the cold weather by rushing in a good supply of fuel while the cold snara lasts, and such articles are in prime demand.
