DAILY GAZETTE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1881 GAZETTE GLEAXIXG. T. S. Sampson, artist, went south yesterday. Mr. Edward Henry bought more town property yesterday. Browning' h real estate agency sold yesterday f,:M) worth of town proper ty J. (. Holland, one of the most noted and popular authors of the present cen tury, Is dead. Colin & Bloeh's ulsters and ulsteretls were in demand yesterday evening. They prevent rigoir. A neat new sign, inscribed Pelany House, looms up on Douglass Avenue, just east of the Optic block. Among the lawyers of Las Vegas, W. M. Whitelaw wears the best clothes.and Judge Lee draws the best pictures. Fisk's real estate agency has sold $10,000 worth of city property within two weeks, mostly to non-residents. Fitzgerrcll, the live real estate man, reports the sale of two houses and twenty-nine lots for the sum of forty two hundred dollars. The most puzzling question that Col. Catron tackled during the recent term of the District Court, was "Where is Mike Kerrigan?" with variations. Chas. Montaldo, formerly with the Montaldo theatrical troupe, is running the White House Billiard Hall in Albu querque. It is a first-class establish ment. Rev. Dr. Stuart Robinson, a leading minister in the Presbyterian church, and one of the most brilliant and scholarly men of the South, died recently in Ken tucky. The report of the condition of the First National Bank of Santa Fe, shows an outstanding circulation of I!i3,üo0 individual deposits 31)0,155.09, and other items proportionately large. Mr. J. W. Gray has contracted to build a two story stone building on Sixth street, one on Railroad Avenue, and the Foundry. See advertisement for masons in another column. Messrs. Finger & Co. of Albuquer que, have one of the neatest and most complete drug stores in the Territory. These gentlemen are deserving of suc cess and will surely accomplish it. The hymns to be used at the Presby terian service to-day have been printed upon slips of paper which will be dis tributed in the .congregation so that everybody can have a chance to sing. We call special attention to the new advertisement of Calvin Fisk in this issue. Mr. Fisk is a live, thorough-going and reliable man, and is doing much to advance the material interests of our growing city. The evening paper speaks of our dc fenseof Jas. Little. We have made neith er charge or defense of him. The arti cle relating to him was a communica tion from Rees & Locbner, of Albu querque, and distinctly bore their sig nature. There seems to be no end to the build ing business in Las Vegas. A new building to be occupied as a second hand store is being built at the east end of the approach to the bridge over the Rio (jallinas, and C. T. Cromwell,Esq., of Rye, New York, proposes to imme diately begin the erection of two two story stone business houses, one adjoin ing the store of Clements & Martinez, and one between Robbing1 furniture store and Williams drug store on Rail road Avenue. Among the many good things of which the people of this city are justly proud, may be mentioned our ministers of the gospel. We think it would be hard to iind two men in any profession in any community moi-e happily adapted to their work, and to their peculiar sur roundings, than Rev. J. C. Eastman and Rev. J. E. Cohenour, the ministers respectively of the Presbyterian and Baptist churches of Las Vegas. Both are gentlemen of liberal culture, fine social qualities and thoroughly practi cal common sense views. Such men are scarce, but wherever they are found the interests of the faith they profess, are bound to thrive in their hands. Col. T. B. Mills, Secretary of the So corro Tunnel Company, is getting up a magnificent prospectus of the property which they own in the Socorro moun tain. It will be the most elaborate and complete prospectus ever gotten out by a mining company in New Mexico. It will contain a report made by J. M. Robertson on the Socorro Tunnel mine, giving complete, reliable and scientific information in relation to the property. Tl'e report will be illustrated with drawingsof the mine and surroundings, One drawing will show Socorro moun tain and location of the tunnel. The second drawing will show the tunnel and veins of ore and the third will show a section of the tunnel. This mine will prove one of the most important prop erties in all the West, according to the report, which is very complete and ex plicit, there is now a million and a half ifollars worth of oro in sight. A year's work on the mine will place the capital stock at par at a valuation of one mil lion dollars. Along the GalUleo. The first station the traveler meets with when coming up the Galisteo river is WALLACE. This station it growing rapidly, and is fast becoming an important trading point. Not only the trade of the A. T. & S. F. Co. tend to make it an import ant point, but the trade from the mines in the vicinity and from Indian villages on the Rio Grande, help to build and sustain it. (Jen. Moore has a large and constantly increasing general merchan dise and restaurant business. He feeds on an average of one hundred people per day. John Ryan has just finished the Shamrock llou.so. It is fifty feet long and thirty feet wide, nicely finished and furnished. It is a good place to get a square meal and a good drink. T. W. Mcllvain has opened a grocery store and news-stand, and also keeps the post-office. S. M. Montoya has a well filled dry goods store and is doing a good busi ness. The railroad company has built a large number of tenement houses and is now building a large two-story eating house. Everything has an air of pros perity. The next point of interest on this river is CERRILLOS station. This place is beginning to give new evidences of life and prosperity New houses are going up on every side ü. D. Harkness, one of the oldest resi dents of the place, is building an addi tion to his hotel. Mr. C. W. Uptegrove is building a hotel 80 feet by 30 feet, two stories high, with 24 by 10 feet wide. Mr. Uptegrove is a new comer in the country, and intends to build up a sub stantial home at Cerrillos. P. H. Weidman is putting up a gro eery store and restaurant which is to be 00-feet long by 20 feet wide. It will be finished in about ten days. H. W. HaUbrd is also putting an addi tion to his saloon which will add much to its convenience. ilr. Jlanoru lias a good trade. Mr. St. Clair, formerly of Wallace, is building a saloon forty feet long by twenty feet wide. W. C. Hurt has purchased the stamt formerly owned by Mr. Omero, and has put in a large stock of general mcrchan dise. He is a careful business man and has a splendid trade. The Los Cerrillos Mining and Smelt ing Company has taken hold of the old machinery and buildings which- have been lying idle for so long and have prepared them for active service. New machinery lias been put in and the buildings have been enlarged. The company consists of Ex-Governor of Colorado, President ; W. Spriegelberg, of Santa Fe, Vice-President and Treas urer : J. K. Wurtzbach, General Mana ger ; J. K. Goodwin, Secretary, and Prof. Fritz Waif, Superintendent. The headquarters of the company is at Santa Fe. This company is backed by large capitalists and important developments may soon be expected. Halls Dry Amalgamating Company is also putting forth great efforts in the direction of obtaining the gold in the placer diggings. Two machines are on the way to Cerrillos, one' of them isa thirty ton machine and the other a iif teen machine. The latter will be used principally for testing claims. Mr. Hall, the inventer of the Dry Amalgamator, is now at the Cerrillos personally super intending operations. One of the great needs of the place at present, is a depot. Considerable freight is now unloaded at Cerrillos, a depot is therefore fast becoming a ne cessity. There is some talk in railroad circles of putting a depot at that point in the near future. LA ULOKIETTA beautiful sight, is growing rapidly. The citizens realize the fact that this is one of the prettiest locations on the line of the A. T. & S. F. road, and they propose to make it a desirable resort. A school house has been built by the people of the town. It was turned over to the directors yes terday. School will be commenced in a few weeks. J. Routledge has a large stock of general merchandise and a nourishing trade. He also has a black smith and wagon shop in connection. He is doing well. A. J. Hager also has a well-filled store of general merchan dise. 'The postónico is in his building. Mr. Hager also makes railroad lumber a specialty. J. M. Burns and F. Watkins furnish the town with the choicest of beef. They have worked up a fine trade in this line. W. II. Zutavern deals largely in lum ber and is doing a good business. Messrs. M. Hanson, T. W. Anderson and G. W. Boyd do the saloon business for the nourishing young city. Each one keeps a nice place and has a good trade. The mines in the vicinity are showing up well and much may be ex pected from them in the near future. Mr. Felix S. Goldsmith, formerly with Jafl'a Bros., has accepted the posi tion of head book-keeper in the store of Spiegelberg Bros., Santa Fe. This is one of the wealthiest mercantile firms in New Mexico, and they are to bo con gratulated in having obtained the ser vices of as competent man as Mr. Gold smith. C. M.
