and make no attempt to curry favor and
excite the sympathy of the public by
laying the murder of the President
upon other shoulders. The people will
not take kindly to any such nonsense.

The Weekly Northern Whig, the lead
ing Liberal North of Ireland paper,
which has bitterly opposed arbitrary
landlordism uniformly, and was prose
cuted some time since by lord Hert
ford's agent, says: "We could under
stand O'Connelí agitating for repeal at
a time when imperial Parliament would
not have thought of passing Church acts
or Land acts, out now that Parliament
is willing1 to concede every fair Irish de
mand, it is preposterous to think of a
movement that could by no possibility
enlist the hearty unanimity of Irelanil
itself. The experience through which
the country has passed during the last
two years would rather demonstrate the
utter impossibility of Ireland being left
to itself when the most reckless would
be sure to command in any serious exi
gency the willing allegiance of the
masses."
Newgate Prison, one of the old land
marks of London, is to be pulled down.
Clerkenwell Prison will become in fu
ture the central lock-up for London
malefactors, and the courts of law,
which comprise what is known as the
Old Bailey, will be enlarged so as to
cover the space now occupied by the
prison. U was a hideous object, black
with smoke, though only justa century
old, and a decided defacement to a
great thoroughfare. Jt was built by
Dance in 1782, just after the Uonlc'n
riots, who had but one idea, to make it
impregnable. In its fronts many noted
criminals swung; here Teristlew'ood ex
claimed, ' shall soon know the last
great secret, " and Fauntleroy, before
liis fall, communicated the secret of

The Revolutionary Centennial era was
brought to an end decently and in or
der at Yorktown last week. A new or
der of events will have to be celebrated
hereafter, and there will be no lack of
opportunity, for "peace hath her vic
tories, no less renowned than war."
Perhaps the first really big thing will
be the anniversary of the establishment
of the government under the constitu
tion, in 1781). Then to go back for an
"event" three centuries further, will
come, in 18!)2, the four Imndreth anni
versary of the discovery of America.

Dr. Talmy, an eminent surgeon of the
French navy,. has gone t the coast of
Senegal to make a study on the spot of
t he recent terrible outbreak of yellow
lever. Dr. Talmy's direct object is to
determine the application to this dis
ease of M. Pasteur's new theory of spe
nilic inoculation as a preventive against
epidemics.
