If the criminal U a crank with no more mental aberation than GuitLau shows, he should be buns, is the general verdict. ' V . , Some towns nnd cities have an ever lasting boom. They grow steadily ami constantly without., any particular reason . for; it They " have , general ground nd far leaching resources. Such a town is Las Wgas, It han ik v cr hid any particular thing to give it a hasty boom of mushroom growth, ti spring up in a day and die dowrOu'á night. The railroad did not stop horiJ for any length of time when building through the Territory; '' It received no especial i bonefit , from beings, the terminus f tíie L' , railroad ti a short period. On the contrary It gained by the trailroaá being pushed to the rich valley of , the llio Grandt) and the mining regions of the south west. , , It opened to , búry jnérfehants vast and wealthy regions whieli befoi contributed: but little trado to the town It brought the Rio Grande yalleythc rich mining regions of the mountains along its length,' the mines of, Grant Oounty and of Arizona and Chihuahiia to our doors as, purchasers. .Where Las Vegas merchants formerly sold dolj lars worth of goods in these sections, they now sell thousands of dollars worth; It brings southern New Mexico to as easy reach of our trade as is Northern New Mexico. This accounts for the continu ous boom of Las Vegas.' The striking advantage of position has called hither the most, energetic and thorough-going class of i business men which come ' to f, ;thc ' Territory. 1 They study the situatiou and fix upon this as the stratigic pointy from which to transact business throughout the length and breadth of tho" Territory, This accounts for the enterprise of her people and the sternly boom Which she enjoys. Las Vegas Is the Chicago' of the Southwest in relation to the pusli and energy, of her? people Building never lets up. 'The', more houses that aro finished, tho more are projected . It grows on forever, as Den ver is growing, a Chicago, New York and London grow.because position, sup- plics a vast empire of resources. .. Si -; Thk Denver papers are still discuss ing the question of the 1). & N. Ú. raiL roai ana wnere it snail rup, It wa.9 originally designed to run on a bee line between Denver and New Orleans. It is a Denvea enterprise, and by the road striking Denver first of all towns along the ltocky Mountains it was supposed that Denver would then become the general depot for all the traffic which would seek a cheep outlet by the Gulf road. For this reason the Tribune bit torly opposed the road going to Pueblo. Should the road go straight from the latter point across the plains it would enjoy- t equally j . the " advantages intended a line for Denver. The road will be built to Pueblo, However, and now the question is shall it be extende-d still farther down the mountains to Trinidad. A wise policy will build the road not only to Trinidad, but to Las Vegas. If Denver can string a number of healthy and growing towns on her through route to the Gulf she will reap great advantages. That town is aspir-1 ing to commercial supremacy. in the mountains. To control the business of a region she must have ailroad to do it, and not only that, but it must be a road that can go squarely into a fight for low rates ot freight with Eastern lines. If Las Vegas can get goods cheaper iron Denver than from Kansas City there is where the goods will be bought, Den vui iuu iiuvu ;i ro;m io iew Mexico which can carry freight ohtaper than the roads from the East if New Mexico trade is detired. The Denver & I? in tirando road depends' ori'.' local trafile alone for its support. ( It must, there fore, have good freight rates and would not be a competing line. It is other wise with the Denver & New Orleans. Built b y way of Las Vegas to Fort Worth it would rely largely for support on through traffic from thu , Gulf. The local trafilo- could be'1'" donó cheaply. It could land goods in Las Vegas from Denver cheaper than Eastern roads could from Kansas City. It would give Denvor a tremendous ad vantage as a purchasing point for all lo cal centers along tho line, , But should It go on a bco lino across the unproduc tive plains it will neither be a paying road, or of great advantage to Denver. The explosives are manufactured at' the scene of operations, all other supplies being received from this city, England or Canada. The contract price for building the section of the read for which Mr. Onderdonk is the- contractor is $10,000,000. ... He expects, to com plete , his,;: ' contract in about three years. The road, though origi nally inaugurated by the Dominion Government, has been recently turned oyer to the Syndicate. The entire dis tance is 4,500 miles, and the road, when completed, will be the longest unbrok en line in the world. It will be com pleted in 181)0, at a cost of $00,000,000. An effort will then be made to control the Oiisntal trade, and With this end in view a line of steamers will be ulaccd on the Pacilic, with the probability of another to Australia. Amrricnn Race Hor.fs. In the July number of the Quarterly Review, published in 1831, Mr. Apperly (alias "Nimrod") ventureduponastart ling and daringprophecy. "It is iu the New World-that is to say, in Ameri ca" he remarked, "'that racing and the consequent improvement of horses are making the most rapid progress: so much so, indeed, as, from the excellent choice the Americans make of their stud horses, to incline some persons to the opinion that in the course of half another century we shall have to go to the United States to replenish our own blood, which must degenerate ' if that of the most sound and enduring quali ty is transported to that country," Fif ty years, save two, have closed since these words were' written, and, behold, the Autumn of 1881 has seen their ful filment. In each of the last throe meet ings held at Newmarket this year, J. R. Keene's magnificent colt Foxhall gave abundant evidence of his quality and excellence by going on crescyndo from the first to the second October meeting, and finally by ! setting the seal upon his matchless tamo by win ning the Cambridgeshire in the Hough ton meeting at an unprecedented weight. Foxhall is at this moment the best horse in the world. It is to Mr. Keene's colt that Englishmen must look for a sire capable of infusing new vigor and stamina into what must, we fear, be pronounced a ' declining breed of horses, aud it would be a singular cli max to Foxhall's unique career if some wealthy English purchaser should in duce Mr. Keenc which wo think little likely to part with tho grandest horse in existence. The Men Who Miecced. The ereat difference among men, of all callings, is tho energy of character or the want of it. Given the same amount of learning and integrity, and the same opportunities, and energy will make one man a conqueror. The want of it will see the other a failure. Dead bea s are all men without force. Their had as good a chance as any of they companions. Others went ahead and carried off the prizes, while they were lying by the wayside dispirited and des pondent. It takes nerve, vim, perse verance, patient continuance in well doing to win t a , great , prize. And the young man who goes into a profession without this pluck and force will not earn salt to his porridge. He will drag along through life with the help of friends, getting some credit with them for being a well-meaning San, in delioato health and unlucky The real trouble is ho lacks energy. All the learning in thu world will ' not qualify c a man for usefulness. It re quires push, stumina, vigor, courage, resolution, will, determination in ono word, energy. iV. Y. Observer. W have always urged the! advisabll ity of leaving French terms from bills ot fare. In tne large number we have received tho past week we find there are still many hotel men who think it impossible to do eating In the English language,' and therefore mutilate a few French words and stick them on their bills as an evidence 1 of superior cater ing. If the French terms used were only spelled right they might pass, but in nine cases in ten they are not, and to those who understand the language it looks ridiculous and atlected, and those not of ."French education", aro in blissful ignorance of what Is meant.
