Saturday night the party of railroad
officials who left Topeka November
20th, arrived in Topeka from Paso del
Norte, Mexico. The party was com
posed of Mr. C. C. U heeler. General
Manager A., T. & S. F. R. K.; Mr. D.
J. Chase, Superintendent; Mr. W. F.
White, (Jeneral Passenger and Ticket
Agent ; George R. Peck, General Solic
itor; J. F. Goddard, General Freight
Agent; A. A. Robinson, Chief Engi
neer; F. L. Parker, of Boston, President
Strong's Private Secretary; and Mr. S.
AV. Commongs, also of Boston, General
Auditor of the Atlantic & Pacific R. R.
Knowing that the object of the meeting
was a conference with the officials of
the Texas & Pacific & Southern Pacific
railroads, and desiring to lay before the
Capital readers any information con
cerning railroad matters in the South
west that would be of general interest,
a representative of this paper called on
Mr. Wheeler yesterday afternoon at
the Gordon House and solicited an in
terview. Mr. Wheeler, though feeling
indisposed from the effects of the jour
ney, received the reporter courteously,
stating, however, that there was little
to tell that was new.
"How do you find work progressing
on the Mexican Central?" interrogated
the reporter.
"I think they have seventeen miles of
track laid out lrom raso uei jnoi'ic,
Mexico, where ex-Governor Anthony,
the General Superintendent of the road
makes his headquarters. We went oi
about twelve miles on the road whic
is completed five miles further, besides
thirteen miles that is graded,
making in all, thirty miles of
the road that is finished or ready for
the rails. The road is laid out and
partially graded for one hundred miles
out from Paso del Norte."
"Is the Atlantic and Pacific railroad
making much headway?"
"They are operating west from Albu
querque, New Mexico, 280 miles, and
have thirty miles more nearly ready."
"How far have they yet to go and
when will the lino be completed?"
"At a rough guess, without looking at
the. map, 1 should say about seven huiii
dred miles. When the road will be
completed I am unable to say."
"Mr. Wheeler, is yourcompany build
ing a road north from Guaymas on the
coast of the Gulf of Mexico?"
"No sir : that road is being construct
ed by Boston parties with whom Mr.
Nickerson is connected. We are build
ing the line from Benson, Arizona, to
connect with the Guaymas line."
"May I ask the result of your confer
ence at Paso del Norte with the other
railroad men."
"There is very little to say about it.
We went down to confer with the South
ern Pacific ami Texas & Pacific people
The meeting was an amicable one, but
little was accomplished. There were
certain physical difficulties that made
it so."
"The two roads you mentioned have
made their connection, 1 believe?"
"Yes sir ; the point of connection is
about ninety-four miles from - Paso del
Norte at a point called Cerro Blanco.
The two roads met Thursday, Decem
ber 1st."
"Was the event celebrated?"
"Well, no ; in fact there are n inhab
itants there to take part in celebrating
the union."
In further conversation Mr. Wheeler
stated matters on the line of his road
were running along smoothly. Some
difficulty was found in getting good
men for the work on the southern por
tions, as the place was not a desirable
one for residing in. Referring to ru
mors of changes in the officers of the
road that have been coming to Topeka
from Chicago, Mr. Wheeler replied in
effect that there would be few, if any,
and that there would bo no Assistant
General Manager of the road, and pro
nounced as without foundation the ru
mor that Mr. Goddard, the General
Freight Agent of the road, was to be
removed and made Traffic Manager,
lie was ignorant of how the Chicago
papers knew so much about the affairs
of the road.
GENEHAL PASSENGER AND TICKET ACJEN'T
W. F. WHITE.
Calling on Mr. White, the Passenger
and Ticket Agent of the A. T. & S. F.
R. 11., at his picasant quarters on Van
Buren Street, our reporter was re
ceived in the usual agreeable manner
characteristic oí tins gentleman, in a
chat of a few moments Mr. White
stated that the trip wss not an un
pleasant one to him, but several of the
other members of the party were taken
ill with sore-throat, bad colds and the
sickness incident to a first visit in that
altitude. The conference of railroad
mea at Paso del Norte was adjourned
with an understanding that a second
meeting would be held at an early day,
Erobabiy the last of the week, at St.
ouis. Going and coming the trip was
of the nature of a tour of inspection;
the points passed in the night going
down were all viewed on the return
trip. The large new hotel at Las Vegas,
Mr. White States, is rapidly being com
pleted, and will cost $50,000. The
preparations for the Feast of Guada
lupe, which commences the 8th of this
month at Paso del Norte, are very ex
tensive and it will have an immense
attendance. The bull-lighting com
mences on the 12th, and a number of
wild animals that never saw a human
being until they were captured, are
awaiting the conflict with the Mata
dores which will result in the death of
the bull and perhaps of the Matodor.
Paso del Norte, the place of the feast, is
an old Mexican town, scattered along
the south banks of the Rio Grande del
Norte for a distance of fifteen miles.
Topeka Capital.
Hayward's meat market is the place
to get fat beef, mutton, pork and veni
son. Bologna sausage, head cheese,
etc. A largo supply of dried beef is
