Webster, once snil that not a bushel of
wheat could be raised in California, but
notwithstanding (lie wild assertion of
this great statesman, uninformed a to
the climate and productiveness of Cali
fornia, inillioumipoii millions of bushels
of wheat arc raised there. New Mexi
co is not a barren land by any means.
The soil in remarkably productive and
fertile when moisture is ; supplied;
Wheut oats, barley, buckwheat, etc.
grow with wonderful vigor and yield
enormously. Forty, bushels , of : wheat
to the acre is a common yield where
any attention is given to the crops.
The grain is large and plump and as
fine as can be produced in i the world.
It makes the best of flour. Previous to
the advent of the railroad across he
great plains and when the
isolated population of New Mexico
had to rely i , upon their own
resources, then agriculture was practic
ed to a much greater degree than at
present. The valleys of the Mora and
the Taos became famous as wheat pro
ducing districts and furnished food for
the Pike's Peakers who first invaded
Colorado. Experiments snflicient have
been tried to fully demonstrate that in
the productions of the cereals New
Mexico is a success. Corn grows well
in the low altitudes, but the nights are
too cold to make it an imporant crop
above six thousand feet. It may, be
said that the area is too limited, the
valleys of the streams, to count much
upon agriculture in New Mexico. 'The
land, however, subject to irrigation is
is much greater than may be imagined
at fi rst thought. New Mexico is a big
country. It has numberless streams of
water flowing through rich and fertile
valleys whoso area in the. aggregate
is greater than is some states.
; Let them bo tilled to their
capacity and New Mexico , will
be no mean food producing country.
Besides it is not yet demonstrated that
it is necessary to confine agricul
ture alone to the valleys of the
water courses. The rainfall in New
Mexico is not inconsiderable. Three
years out of five crops can be produced
without irrigation on uplands. By
ploughing the ground to greater depth
this certainty of crops muy be increas
ed. At present soil is merely stirred
with sticks or small plows in the most
superficial manner. The underground
baked hard by the dry season sheds
the rain fully as well as a dirt roof
Break the around up and let the snow
of winter and rains of summer pene
trate deep. The clay soil of the up
lands will hold the moisture and the
natural rainfall, though limited, will
generally be sufficient to mature the
crops. Agriculture may yet be made a
success in New Mexico and wheat be
as certain a crop as in many of the
eastern states. Proper tillage may
cause the nine mile hill to yet bloom
over with waving fields of wheat.

sel, is said to be the wealthiest practi
tioner in England. His law office is a
shabby back room, furnished with two
chairs, a table, a few musty law books,
and an army of ink bottles. His clerk's
room, adjoining, though plain, is fur
nished with princely splendor in com
parison with the den of the great bar
rister. He gives away great sums in
charity, while his personal expenses
are almost nothing.

We will never abuse Talmage any
more after having said the following
about newspapers: "Do not take the
idea so prevalent that when a man can
do nothing else he can edit a newspa
per. If you cannot climb the hill back
of your house you had better not try
the Matterhorn; if you cannot navigate
a sloop up North River, you had better
not try to engineer the Great Eastern
across to Liverpool. To publish a
newspaper requires the skill, the pre
cision, the vigilance, the strategy, and
the boldness of a commander in chief;
to edit a newspaper, one needs to be a
statesman, an essayist, a geographer, a
statistician, and, so far as all acquisi
tions are concerned, encyclopedia. 10

Railroad New.
Roadmaster Riggs, of the Denver &
Rio Grande road, has doubled his force
o! workmen at this point wit'iin the part
three days, lie has received orders to
have the third rail laid through the
vard so that broad cause through trains
from Kansas Cit v to. Denver, can be
run into the Union depot by the 20th of
this month. It will keep him on the
the iump to do it, but Roadmaster
Riggs can do it any man can. He is
also ene-aired in the Smith Pueblo yard
tearing up the iron rails and replacing
them with steel ones.
