Charles Blanchard, on the Plaza, Las Vegas, New Mexico. DAILY GAZETTE SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1381. Tim I'M have Changed. .It is really refreshing to sit hi the easy chair und rtad newspapers now in ' New Mexico. What a vast contrast compared with journalism of twenty and more years ago when the mails from the States arrived here only about ererytwo weeks, and sometimes not for a month. To day, here at a ranch, seventy-five miles away from a railroad, we can read the doings of the whole world two days after the occurrence, by dispatches published in our home journals and all of them, with the exception of per haps oue or two, are always full of cheering news, bright prospects and glowing accounts of the present and future. Five dailies give the current news of the days in different sections of the Ter ritory. Grant county, Lincoln and Socorro furnish almost exclusively the progress in the getting out of our min eral resources and the Cwlfax papers are full of news about coal mines.placer and lode diggings as well as of valuable items pertaining to stock raising. In deed, the country is improving. Twenty years ago we had no home market except for provisions. The sheep were allowed t drop their wool among the briq ; a whole lleeco could then be bought anywhere for five cents and everybody who had a jack could get a steer of the same age in exchange a cow and a calf was worth a jenny with a young burro at her side, or if sold for cash if 12 in greenbacks, then worth about sixty cents in gold to the dollar. On the wool question we arc almost sorry that a foreign market has been opened; because the family loom lies now idle and nobody cares any more about weaving zarapes, or black and white chequered carpets. Every pound of wool is sent cast for cash, to give employment to others in spinning our garments, selling us at increased price what we should manufacture ourselves at home. Various towns, or at least their papers, say they want 'woolen mills, but their eitiüeus are inactive, and the only mill in existence in the Territory is rusting its machinery in idleness. This ought. not to be. It is self destruction, a low stage of con sumption sucking the life blood out of New Mexico. Millions of pounds of wool are sold annually for a song and millions of dollars are necesary to bring that amount of wool back in goods. Numerous mountain streams are miowcu w waste meir iorce in jumping from rock to boulder, whereas if judiciously employed their valleys would be full of industrious manufac tures, shouting forth glad tidings of im provements, life and prosperity. Shall another year go by without re medy in this direction? Why allow others to get rich on our raw mat erial when there is abundance of power, wil ling nanus 10 niuor ana idle capital within easy reach? The same holds good to the manufacture of hides and pelts into saleable goods at home. But the sheep who give this wool are increasing in price as fast as they are improving in quality, and as for cattle, now many Dtirros would, it require to- uay io uuy a inree year okl, improved shipping steer. One, nor two could not do it, in fact trade of that kind is out of use and the cattle man has brighter prospects before him in the future. Keep all the cows and heifers you got boys and neighbors and buy more with the surplus steers and best of all, secure your rights with ample pasture, while it is time. The day is not far distant when all the bottom lands will be under cultivation and the uplands taken up by less than sections by the industrious farmer, to raise his own feed and sell the produce of his small herds and lucky he who can then show a patent for his homestead. lied ltivcr Chron icle.
