The Democrats of Dallas City, Han cock County, 111., acquire tho confec tion for originality, as will be seen by the following notice which is posted in public places in that city of fresh ness and freedom : DEMOCRATS, ATTENTION. The Democrats of Dallas City and surrounding' country aro hereby ro- ........... tho T, nb- ollico Saturday, August 29, 1885, at 1 o'clock p. m., for the purpose of electing a Democratic candidate for postmaster of Dallas City. Dallas City, August 14, 1885. The New York Evening Post prints a singular article from a correspon dent on the leluctance of men to marry. It finds the chief objection to marriage among them in the fact that marriage is an indissoluble con tract, and suggests that "no one would ever think of making an indis soluble contract in business." This is followed by a vivid picture of the troubles that may come to a husband who obtains a wife not altogether to his mind ; and it might easily be supplemented by another sketch of the misery of a wifo with an uncon genial husband. The fallacy of this view is in its regarding the marriage relation as a business arrangement and nothing more. If the element of affection ia to bo left out of it, tho objection might hold ; but the con viction has been that marriage was more than a business contract that there was a mutual attachment in it that harmonized diverse natures, and had the power to make a mingling of oppoVites in which one should com plement rather than clash with the other. Tartics often make n mistake in this respect, and find there is not the requisite love to induce forbear ance on one or the other side, or on both sides, it may be. Hence the frequent applications, for divorce ap- plications that appear to increase in greater ratio than tliey are grained. Hasty and inconsiJerate marriages are the chief rout of this evil, and the laxity of tho laws of divorce make them the more likely to occur. He would do a great work for society who could lessen the numher of marriages from caprice or passion. Clergymen too often unite parties who it ia ap- paicnt are not fit for the marriage re lation. They might well be held more responsible to the law in this respect : for clergymen, with all their , nl,ltp ,flVi tint alwavR moro -i- --j than a sut.crticial insight as to human nature, nor do they evince strong practical sense in dealing with it.
