OLD DUCKS PLAY ALCHESAY BAND
TURKEY DAY GAME AT ARTS FETE
by Irma Kitcheyan
WHITE RIVER - While everybody
else was getting ready in preparing
food for the Thanksgiving Day
dinner, the ex-high school boys or
men v ere getting ready to play in
the Tliariksgiving Day Turkey Bowl
Game.
With borrowed uniforms and 30
men who had signed up to play
showed up at Alchesay High School
football field to start the game
tHat afternoon. The men were
divided into two groups to make
the team.
The game was schedided by Ivan
Kitcheyan and Gordon Wood. These
men hadn't played football since
they graduated from high school
nor had they practiced, for some
it was just a year or two, while
for others, it was 5 years or more.
It was a surprise to see some
interested people showing up for
the game and staying to watch it.
During the game, it was interest
ing to see some fat ones and slim
ones playing; some who couldn't
run any more or some who couldn't
catch the ball.
But all in all, every one ol those
m en did a good job of playing
football. It really was a good
game.
Gordon Wood passed to Ray Hume
for the first touchdown for Wood's
team. Gordon then passed another
to Curtis Albert for the s< cond
touchdown to make the sc re 12
points for Wood's team.
Ivan Kitcheyan threw a pass to
Archie Cosen for the first touch
down and another pass by Kit
cheyan to Randall DeClay made
the second touchdown.
After the second touchdown
Kitcheyan passed to Ramon Riley
for the tie breaking point to win
the game 13 to 12.
I am pretty sure that all those
men that played on the team had
fun playing and it was fun
watching them play.
December, 1963
WHITERIVER - The Alchesey
High School Band participated in
the Apache County Fine Arts
Festival at St. Johns, November
23, 1963.
The Festival is an annual event
and meets at a different school
each year. Seven schools which
were in attendance at the Festival
were St. Johns, Round Valley,
Window Rock, Chinle, Ganado,
McNary, and Alchesay.
The Alchesay Band played the
following numbers: "Prayer and
March", "Forest Splendor", and
Marcho Poco". This playing
received a rating of excellent for
the band.
The brass ensemble, Sid Bronson,
Rebecca Harvey, Nick Pierson,
Don Martin, Bill Kessel, and Mark
Vice played "Moon Meadows".
They received a rating of
excellent.'
The reed ensemble, Clara
Martin, Chadeen Brewer, Susan
Oliver, and Roger Gentry also
received a rating of excellent.
This is one of the really worth
while things that are happening
in the schools of Northern Arizona,
according to Mr. Cletus A. Moor
man, high school band director.
"Our students get to know
students from other schools. I
believe that the three excellent
ratings we earned represented
ratings we earned represent a real
accomplishment when they are
viewed in relationship to our
school band, " said Moorman.
Women’s Club
Christmas Party
FORT APACHE - The Fort
Apache Women's Club held its
annual Christmas party December
3 in the tome economics room at
the Whiteriver Public School.
Each year members are asked to
bring a washable toy, unwrapped,
for a small child. The toys
are auctioned by Mrs. Marcia
Pebbie to the highest bidders. After
the auction, the toys are placed in
a box to be delivered to the
children in the Public Health
Hospital at Christmas. Proceeds
from the auction are given to the
nursery at East Fork Mission to buy
whatever equipment is needed.
This year approximately S7O. 00
was realized from the auction.
After the auction, members
exchanged small gifts.
Refreshments were served by
hostesses, Mrs. Bonnie Oliver and
Mrs. Viola Hughes.
