Page Six OPPOSE SCHEME TO KILL STATE BOARD Special Meeting State Barbers Held in Denver Sill Is Introduced By Representative Spencer to Abolish License Beard; Will Be Foofht By Association A special meeting of the Colorado State Association of Journeymen Union Barbers was held in Denver this week to take action on u bill introduced by Representative Spencer to abolish the -'tate barbers’ license law. This law has laceu beneficial to the public in enforc ing sanitary barber shops and in elim inating incompetent and unhealthy bar bers from operating in this state. In view of the fact that the bill was in troduced “by request,” it would not ap pear to have any chance- of passage. However, the union barbers are not nsleep and called a special meeting, at which the action taken was formulated into the following resolutions, copies of . which have been placed in the bands of members of the State legislature: “Whereas, There has been introduced . iu the House of Representatives of the i wentieth session of the Colorado .State legislature by Representative Spencer of Lincoln, Kit Carson and Wells coun ties (by request! a bill t«> repeal the barbers’ license law; and “Whereas, This hiw was enacted by tlic legislature of this state at the re quest of the members of that craft after years of endeavor on tlic part of the barber* of the state; and “Whereas, This law is self-sustaining, hiring of no expense to the taxpayers I of the statp in any way. and Is for the protection of tlic public as well as the members of the Imrber’s eraft; and “Whereas, At least 07 |M-r cent of the barbers in this state are in favor of this law and are willing to pay the small 1 per .capita that is required for the re newals of licenses for the maintenance of the board of examiners; and “Whereas. Since the passage of this i law the barber business lias improved ; at least 25 percent throughout the state | iu the workmanship of those licensed by ! the examining board to work at that ! trade, in the sanitary condition in which shops are required by this law to In kept and in the general improved con dition in which the business is at the j present time; therefore, be it “Resolved. By the Colorado State As sociation of Journeymen Barbers, rep- , resenting 75 per cent of the members of the .barber’s craft in Colorado, in special session assembled, that, we protest most emphatically against tin* repeal of this barkers’ license law. which was enacted for the protection of the 'public and for the general uplift of the barber trade throughout the state, and that we most respectfully request all members of the twentieth session of the Legislatufe of the state of Colorado to use their ut most endeavors, to defeat House Bill So. 114, 'introduced by Representative Speheer, believing that the passage of repeal bill would have a tendency to Cower the standard of the merabrs of this' craft and be a menace to the gen era ( health of the public. “THOS. See 51 r Rockefeller.” Rockefeller, came out of the conferenc room a few minutes later, hut did not give an extended review of the confer ence as he had, done after his talk with "Mother” Jones on the previous day. “It was just an informal, unofficial talk,” he said, replying to questions. "Tlu-y give me certain facts about tin situation in Colorado that I was glad to know and there was a general talk on the situation. No new suggestion - were made.” “When are you going to Colorado. Mr. Rockefeller?” was asked. “if you can tell me that. I HlionUlaiti-l j glad to know," he replied. MR. DREW INSISTS ON A QUESTION N. A. M. At the hearings of the United States industrial relation* commiHsiou in New York one of the mcrnl>er*,read froftn a slip of paper this question for Pi evi dent Goinpers to answer: “If a union injures other* unlawfully through a l>oycott, a sympathetic si l ike i or by violence and dynamite, ought it not to he laid liable for damages?” j President Gompcr* insisted that the , author’* name 1m- given, and when told it was Drew, replied: "lie asked the *ame quest ion in (he same way in the Senate judiciary com mittee investigation. Among the Indian legends which have been forever crystallized iu Longfellow*# “Song of Hiawatha” is one which tell* how Pau-Puk-Keew'ig, the “Storm Fool,” found Hiawatha's wigwam unprotected one morning, and having done all the mischief lie could do ill the house went out to kill all the birds that fluttered ’round about the dwelling. Organized labor is frequently visited by the “Storm Fool.” He is the creature who gets into the organization to do all the mischief he can. His first concern is to destroy the work of the organization itself and then to break down the ideals of the move ment. Hiawatha had her hands full in her efforts to exterminate her “Storm Fool.” The “Storm Fool.” true to his nature, at once began to change forma. First he liecame a beaver, then a big fisli, then a gigantic bird, lastly a ser pent. But Hiawatha killed him In each of tliese forms. Finally, after many ad ventures, he is eauglit in his own natur al shape aim rushes to the mountains for shelter, where the storm, the wind, the thunder and the lightning rend the rocks, and they fall upon him and lu* is crushed to death. Our labor species adopts a similar course of deceit. But he, too, is finally apprehended.— Ix>s Angeles Citizen. Opportunity does not only do great work, but if not heeded is often disas trous.
